A jury of 10 women and 8 men will decide whether Timothy Jones, Jr. is guilty or innocent. Prosecutors say Jones killed his children at his home in Red Bank in 2014 before dumping their bodies in Alabama. https://www.wbtv.com/2019/05/14/watch-live-opening-statements-begin-tuesday-trial-sc-man-accused-murder-his-children/ …

Inside the courtroom where opening statements are set to begin in the Timothy Jones murder trial. Solicitor Rick Hubbard and his team are already inside. More than a dozen people seated in the gallery.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3h3 hours ago
Judge Eugene Griffith just called the court to order. Around the same time, Timothy Jones came in with some of his defense team. He’s wearing a white dress shirt and a dark red tie.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3h3 hours ago
Timothy Jones Sr. is in the courtroom today. He’s seated a couple of rows behind his son and his defense team. Judge Griffith calls in the jury and talks to them as they take their seats.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 3h3 hours ago
Timothy Jones Jr.'s parents are sitting right behind him in the courtroom. They've been advised by the bailiff they are not to communicate or touch Jones. @wis10

Seanna Adcox‏ @seannaadcox_pc 3h3 hours ago
Lawyers’ opening arguments in the death penalty trial of Timothy Jones Jr. are about to start. Judge Eugene Griffith opened his talk to jurors by pointing to a bucket of candy he brought them: “It’s going to be OK. It’s going to be a little lengthy.”

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 3h3 hours ago
Jones' father is already getting emotional as the prosecution begins its opening statements. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3h3 hours ago
The prosecution begins their opening statement, listing the names of Jones’s five children and how they died, while maintaining a common theme of “a father should be safe in a father’s arms.”

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 3h3 hours ago
Prosecution wraps up opening statements in 15 minutes, vowing to prove Tim Jones Jr. killed his five children with malice. Deputy Solicitor Graham says "he knew what he did was wrong--that's why he ran." @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3h3 hours ago
Shawn Graham wraps up his opening statement, saying that Timothy Jones cared more about himself than his children and that “he’s not insane. He’s a murderer.”

Public Defender Robert Madsen has his turn to talk to the jury. Starts off by saying Jones has schizophrenia.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 3h3 hours ago
Jones' defense team tells jury he is schizophrenic, but had not been diagnosed at the time of the alleged crime. Attorney says Jones' mom has been institutionalized for 20 years with diagnosed schizophrenia. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3h3 hours ago
Madsen continues diving into Jones Jr.’s past, saying that his mother had been institutionalized with a mental illness for decades, and that he got into a traumatic car accident when he was young.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3h3 hours ago
Madsen says after he was in prison, Jones held his life together with the love of his wife, his job, and religion.

He then talks about how he turned to “self-medication” through drugs and alcohol so he wouldn’t be institutionalized like his mother.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3h3 hours ago
Madsen wraps up his remarks, telling the jury that the State “wants you to look at a few trees, but not the whole forest” when it comes to evaluating Jones’s guilt.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 3h3 hours ago
Opening statements only take about 20 minutes on both sides and we're done for the day. Witnesses will take the stand beginning at 9a Wednesday. Biggest takeaway from the defense: Tim Jones is diagnosed schizophrenic. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3h3 hours ago
Judge Griffith sends the jury out for the day, telling them to come back tomorrow at 9 a.m.

Both opening statements only last twenty minutes.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 3h3 hours ago
Defense makes a motion for a mistrial, accusing Deputy Solicitor Graham of getting choked up while giving the state's opening statements. That motion is denied. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3h3 hours ago
Madsen motions for a mistrial since he thought Graham was about to cry during his opening statement. Judge Griffith says he did not see any tears when Graham had the floor. No mistrial granted.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 22m22 minutes ago
Opening statements wrapped up today, with both sides painting two different versions of Timothy Jones Jr. to the jury.

The Timothy Jones murder trial continues today inside the Lexington County Courthouse. Judge Ernest Griffith just called court into session and will bring the jury in shortly.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 5h5 hours ago
Jones’s father, Timothy Jones Sr., is back inside the courtroom today. Like yesterday, he is sitting two rows behind his son and his defense team.

First witness on the stand for the prosecution is a woman named Jan Wise, who worked at the Boys and Girls Club for 12 years, where several of the Jones children attended. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 5h5 hours ago
The State calls its first witness to the stand. Jan Wise used to work for the Boys and Girls Club for 12 years. Wise says she knew the Jones children, saying the three oldest took part in the program.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 5h5 hours ago
Wise says Jones was the authorized parent who could sign out the children. Says he helped her with her computer and talked with her in a clear and rational manner whenever he came to pick them up.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 5h5 hours ago
State shows a sign out sheet from the Boys and Girls Club from the week the children went missing. Wise says Jones signed out the three children in the program on all days prior to August 29.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 5h5 hours ago
Prosecution now showing surveillance video from when Jones picked up his three oldest children from the Boys and Girls Club on August 28, 2014. Wise said Jones never seemed to be afraid of his children. She also says she never had concerns about his mental health.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 5h5 hours ago
The first piece of video evidence shown by the prosecution is surveillance video of Tim Jones picking up 3 of his children from the Boys and Girls Club the evening of Aug. 28, 2014, the same night of their deaths. @wis10

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 5h5 hours ago
Boys and Girls Club Executive Director testifies Tim Jones did not appear to be afraid of his children when picking them up, nor did she notice anything about his mental state that gave her pause. Had she, she testified she would not have let the children leave. @wis10

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 5h5 hours ago
Today is the second day of Timothy Jones Jr.'s trial. It also would have been the 13th birthday of Merah, Jones' oldest daughter. @wis10

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 5h5 hours ago
Second witness of the day is Janet Ricard, the former assistant principal of Saxe Gotha, where several of the Jones students attended school. She left several messages for Jones on his cell phone after the children hadn't been seen in several days. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 5h5 hours ago
Prosecution calls its second witness to the stand. Janet Ricard was the Assistant Principal at Saxe Gotha Elementary School at the time the three oldest Jones children were in school.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 5h5 hours ago
Ricard said her "heart dropped" when she knocked on the door of the Jones trailer and no one answered. "It was eerily quiet for five kids living there," she testified. It was part of a welfare check with the sheriff's office. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 5h5 hours ago
Ricard says they weren’t initially alarmed when the children were absent from school on August 29 (since it was right before Labor Day Weekend). They became more concerned once the weekend ended. She tried to call him, didn’t get an answer.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 5h5 hours ago
Ricard says after emergency contacts (Jones’s coworker and a relative) didn’t know where the children were, they called the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office to perform a welfare check.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 5h5 hours ago
Ricard says Jones had a strong response to when his children got in trouble, suggesting that she give tougher discipline if they acted up again. She says some of his ideas for punishment “were not appropriate for children that age.”

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 5h5 hours ago
Tim Jones sits motionless as he listens to testimony on behalf of the state. @wis10

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 5h5 hours ago
During cross-examination, Ricard said Elias, in kindergarten at the time, brought a pocket-knife to school. Upon finding out, she said Jones wanted his son to "go to jail" as punishment. When his daughter stole a cookie, he demanded an in-school suspension. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 4h4 hours ago
After the school made the call to DSS to investigate, Ricard says Jones threatened to withdraw his children from Saxe Gotha and was less willing to communicate with them.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 4h4 hours ago
After Ricard leaves the stand, Judge Griffith calls for a 15 minute break.

Jury comes back into the courtroom as the prosecution calls its third witness. James McConnell has worked at Intel for 20 years, where Jones was one of his employees.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 4h4 hours ago
A few more images from inside the courtroom this morning. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 4h4 hours ago
McConnell says Jones first started working at Intel’s Columbia location in 2011, saying that he worked on a team with four people.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 4h4 hours ago
Jones' former boss at Intel says he received "satisfactory" and "exceeds expectations" on job reviews in the years 2011-2013. He was also offered a promotion. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 4h4 hours ago
McConnell says his job evaluations of Jones were “satisfactory” in 2011 and 2012, and his performance in 2013 “exceeded expectations.”

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 4h4 hours ago
McConnell says Jones’s performance in 2013 earned him a promotion, reflecting his willingness to take on more work and his team’s success that year. He says Jones made around $81,000 that year.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 4h4 hours ago
Jones' boss at Intel says he never saw any red flags about his mental health or his ability to function. Testified no other co-workers came to him with concerns about Jones. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 4h4 hours ago
McConnell says he started to notice more changes in Jones in the summer of 2014, saying that he looked like he lost some weight and “had a lot more on his mind.”

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 4h4 hours ago
He continues by saying Jones came into work a little later than normal, saying that he was more distracted and that his performance started to slow down.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 4h4 hours ago
McConnell says he didn’t even notice Jones wasn’t at work on August 29. He texted him the Tuesday after Labor Day, but did not get a response.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 4h4 hours ago
On September 4, McConnell still had no response from Jones and began the process of terminating him. Says it was “shocking and difficult to hear” when he found out about what happened to the children.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 4h4 hours ago
McConnell says there were “no red flags” about Jones and that it’s fair to say “no one saw this coming.”

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3h3 hours ago
When the defense asks about Jones’s relationship with his children, McConnell says he showed him a few pictures and it seemed like he loved them; no reason to suspect he was afraid of them.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3h3 hours ago
The prosecution’s next witness is Christina Elhke, a child care provider who lived in the same neighborhood as Jones and watched the children from time to time.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 3h3 hours ago
Next door neighbor and babysitter of the Jones children, Christina Ehlke, gets emotional on the stand as she reflects on the children being picked up on Aug. 28, the same day police say they were killed by their father. @wis10

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 3h3 hours ago
Unlike the district official and Jones' boss who testified earlier, Ehlke communicated via text message with Jones after the children went missing. So far, she's the only person who was able to contact him successfully in the days after his children's deaths. @wis10

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 3h3 hours ago
Jones called his neighbor on Sept. 1, telling her he "needed a fresh start" with the kids and that he left South Carolina. His neighbor testified the 17 minute phone call never gave her any clues that the children were in danger. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3h3 hours ago
Ehlke says she and Jones exchanged text messages on August 29. The prosecution displays those texts. Ehlke also says Jones called her (a 17 min convo) a few days later to say he needed a fresh start and that he was leaving South Carolina.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3h3 hours ago
The prosecution is still going over Ehlke’s texts with Jones the days after authorities say the murders took place. Jones gave her permission over text to go into the house and give away or sell things in the abandoned home.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3h3 hours ago
At various points in her testimony, Ehlke has started to tear up. The prosecution has showed various pictures of the Jones home and an outline of where rooms were located.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 3h3 hours ago
Pictures from inside the Jones residence shows a disheveled living room and sheets missing from the children's beds and cribs. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 2h2 hours ago
Ehlke’s testimony wraps up with her describing Jones as “socially awkward” who kept to himself and to his work. Judge calls for a lunch break; court to resume around 2:15
