Florence County investigator dies weeks after shooting in Florence's Vintage Place neighborhood

Sheriff Kenney Boone and the FCSO "announce with great sadness the death of Investigator Farrah B. Turner on October 22, 2018," a press release from the FCSO says. "Investigator Turner was mortally wounded in the line of duty while attempting to serve a search warrant on a residence in Florence County on October 3, 2018."

I can’t imagine her family’s grief. What an immeasurable loss....no words can express the sorrow we all have for them. May we offer prayers of comfort that they may in due time find solace.

The Florence man charged with the murders of Sergeant Terrence Carraway and Investigator Farrah Turner appeared before a judge Wednesday morning for a preliminary hearing. However, the hearing was cut short.

The judge told Frederick Hopkins his silence served as a waiver of his right to a preliminary hearing.

Hopkins told the judge he wanted to be excused because he said the hearing was a violation of his constitutional rights. He claimed the hearing was not held within ten days of his written request for a preliminary hearing and asked to be transported back to Richland County.

Hopkins continued to ask to be excused and Judge Weaver eventually called a 5-minute recess, for which Hopkins was escorted from the courtroom. Upon the court's return, Judge Weaver informed Hopkins that she received confirmation that the hearing was scheduled within ten days of his request, therefore the hearing was constitutional.

Hopkins is now being transported back to Richland County. There is no word yet on when a trial will be held.

That pleading alleges that the Hopkins' finances and assets were kept separate during their marriage and asks the court to divide the assets equitably and leave the assets of the marital estate to their children.

"At that time, your honor, we received information from the Richland County Sheriff's Office," Clements said. "Telephone conversations, as you know, in jail, they're all recorded. They were reviewing that and they [Cheryl and Fred] had a couple of conversations about how they were going to do this and fool the court."

Judge Griffith did not rule on the “indigent status” question, but tasked Hopkins’ daughter to prepare a declaration of income of assets, a form that comes from family court.

Hopkins told the judge that “except for Social Security, it is zero across the board.” He said that the former judge brought him a pair of eyeglasses because he “couldn’t read the documents.”

Judge Griffith gave Hopkins daughter 30 days to provide the form and return it to the court. He said that he will reconvene the hearing in 40-45 days.

Judge Griffith said the trial could be held in the next 9 to 12 months.
