Church shooter Dylann Roof says there is nothing wrong with him psychologically

"Emanuel AME Church shooter Dylann Roof told a federal jury this morning that there is nothing wrong with him psychologically and urged them to forget the words of his former attorney who suggested otherwise.

With his life on the line, Roof spoke to the jury for less than five minutes during his opening statement in the hate crime trial's penalty phase. "There is nothing wrong with me psychologically," he said.

This was the first time the 22-year-old white supremacist had addressed the 12-member jury that convicted him last month of 33 federal offenses. They are now mulling whether he should receive a death sentence or a life prison term for the killing of nine black worshipers who welcomed him to their weekly Bible study in June 2015.

Before his conviction, his former attorney, noted capital defense lawyer David Bruck, urged the jury to ponder Roof's state of mind and whether a rationale person would see the murder of nine innocents as an acceptable solution to his perceived problems with black people.

"I would ask you to forget all of that," Roof told the jury in a hollow, flat voice..."

What’s up next in the federal trial of Dylann Roof?

"CHARLESTON, S.C. — Jurors return to court Wednesday to begin considering whether Dylann Roof will receive the death penalty or life in prison for the 2015 massacre at a historic black church in South Carolina that left nine Bible study participants dead.

Last month, the same jury took less than two hours to find Roof guilty of all 33 federal counts against him, including hate crimes and obstruction of religion. After a three-week break over the holidays, jurors are now tasked with the ultimate fate of the 22-year-old who confessed his role in the shootings to FBI agents hours after his arrest.

Here’s what has happened in his trial and what to expect...."

Have any family members been present in court? I have not heard of any since the day his mother was taken from court due to a possible heart attack.

Haven't heard, except when his mother was at trial the first day, that anyone from Roof's family is in court.
I don't tweet, so can anyone maybe tweet one of our reporters to ask them if Roof's family is in court?

I honestly don't believe he doesn't feel a thing for those people. I think his words and facial expressions betray him. But every time he starts to feel something, shame, remorse, sadness, he does the ole' "I had to do it for the white people," to convince himself it had to be done and distract from those feelings. Obviously, he is going to get the death penalty. There's just no argument that can be made, especially if he's not going for mental illness. He didn't even have the courage to off himself. The whole thing is just so utterly tragic and pointless. He did this, killed those nine good, wonderful hearted people for what? A bit of noteriety?

I don't know. Maybe I'm totally wrong.

Thanks so much to Yes or No for posting the tweets. Following along in lurkdom.

He may very well acknowledge some wrong doing..BUT the difference is HE doesn't CARE!! His Pea Brain rationalizes it a something "Necessary".. Much of these mind sets by extremists completely lines up with ANY group who justifies their EXTREMISTS view. Yes..Even Islamic Extremists!!

Often, such folks like this get indoctrinated... just like any online converted disenfranchised types..to commit horrendous crimes! But, in the end, ALL such peeps are radicalized by promotions of false narratives.. which really isn't so different than America's ALT-RIght Mis-Informations/*********/Infowars propaganda Cr@p!!

So KKK.. Government hating types along with Black hating, or taxes or Rules boundaries and limitations ..LOL Poor Dylann had no filter nor direction..and bought into that HE was better, because he was a "Whitey" than those low lives..According to him..Those Low lives must PAY the price??????

I know he doesn't want to be considered Mentally Ill..BUT he sure does exhibit a personality that has been "Brainwashed" without being in a Government program! So cannot blame some covert Government program..

I'm sure KKK and White Nationalists would love to blame Government.. But other than some politicians who spread cr@p and lies.. There is NO program!

Same here, Ms. Josie. I don't know if it would be indicated on a birth cert, but could he have been adopted or born with a drug addiction? Or at least one parent is not biological? I can't think of any other reason it would matter.

Joining this discussion late, I was out all day so I'm catching up -- the only thing with the Birth Cert. that I could think of is that the judge wants to make sure that this guy is indeed 18 years or older since people under 18 cannot be sentenced to death. That's kind of "out there, " I know, but that's what I've been thinking all along with this B. Cert. thing.

Reminds me of one of those stupid word problems

Could never do them still can't ha!

Time Zones :

Niner time zone 1. 1 hour ahead

Church time zone 2 exact same time (!) whatever time that is !!

Web sleuths time zone 3 3 hour ahead

Poster CARRIS time zone 4 6 hours behind.

Please determine the answers to the following based on the above information:

If Niner had an errand to run a 4pm would the trial have started? If Websluteths site had a technical error and was down from 4am-6 am would this impact when posters could post on the trial? If Carris had a question , what Is the first hour Carris could send a question to Niner. If the court had a power black out at 5pm what time would that be Niner? For the website? For Carris? If court starts a 5 pm what time is that for Niner? On the webslueths site? For Carris? For folks in the churches time zone?

I always wanted to write "if your so curious about all this go figure it out yourself - I do not care!!!""

ha!!

I hate 'em, too.

All I know is that GMT is 5 hours ahead of us here in North Carolina -- now that DST is off. :scared:

In this #longread, get a look at our nation’s systemic racism, through the lens of the #DylannRoof trial

‘See What Y’All Can Work Out’: The State of Empathy in Charleston
Charleston’s—and our nation’s—systemic racism, through the lens of the Dylann Roof trial.

"The sentencing phase of Emanuel AME Church shooter Dylann Roof’s trial for racially-motivated mass murder is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, January 4th, 2017. The white supremacist’s trial brought together two writers of color—Shani Gilchrist, one of a small group of black reporters in the press room, and Alison Kinney, an Asian-American living in New York—who, prior to the trial, knew each other only from Facebook. Here they write about their experience in Charleston. They write about banding together to get better access to the story; about resisting white supremacy with creative collaboration and strategic silence; about working together to figure out the ethical responsibility of storytelling now—and to find hope and friendship in their conversations.

1. We write:...
The few attempts to depict the unusual dynamics inside the courtroom resulted in inaccuracies, like a piece in Slate claiming Roof’s mother had a heart attack after hearing the testimony of survivor Felicia Sanders. The truth was, Roof’s mother collapsed earlier that day, when court was adjourned for lunch, after the prosecution and then the defense gave opening statements. I was seated two rows behind, and didn’t see his mother fall over to lie down on the bench. By the time I noticed something was off, all I could see was her belly button ring, revealed as her cropped t-shirt pulled up and exposed the gap above her sky blue leggings. Her partner sat next to her, talking softly, calmly. His mustache barely twitched. After a minute or two, she was sitting up again and his arm was draped casually across her shoulders. She was talking. Making sense. A stretcher was on its way as a safety precaution. Later, we would learn of Roof’s yearning for his mother, and I wondered—no matter the state of her health, her mental state, or her demeanor—if he’d really considered how his actions would affect her movement through the world.

Once it was apparent that the woman would be fine, the rest of us filed out of the courtroom..."

Opinion: Why Dylann Roof Has a Right to the Death Penalty

"Dylann Roof has a constitutional right not to try to spare his own life.

U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel did the wise thing last week when he ordered a new competency hearing for Roof, the Charleston church shooter who does not want to put on a mental health defense when he represents himself Wednesday at the start of the penalty phase of his capital trial in South Carolina.

Gergel may understand there probably will be some sort of an appeal of Roof's conviction and sentence, regardless of what it ends up being, and that this appeal will focus primarily on the delicate dance Roof has had with his court-appointed lawyers (and his own self-representation) as the case has evolved. By making a new competency finding Monday, one that essentially updates the initial one, the judge almost certainly has made it measurably harder for any appeal to succeed — while at the same time ensuring Roof's fair trial rights...

For all the hand-wringing over the constitutionality (and morality) of self-representation in a capital case, for all the arguments that every capital defendant should always present every non-frivolous defense at trial, the truth is that Roof has a constitutional right not to present a defense, to choose to increase the likelihood he'll get the death penalty instead of a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

It is not necessarily a sign of mental illness, or mental instability, or mental incompetence, to take responsibility for one's murderous actions rather than blame them, in some fashion, on some sort of mental disease or defect. Some killers, like McVeigh, saw it as one final act of control over their lives. This may be why Roof on Wednesday in his first direct interaction with jurors chose not to beg for his life but rather to tell the panel: "There is nothing wrong with me psychologically."..."
