Taking a Guilty Plea:

If you choose to give up your right to trial in a criminal case and enter a guilty plea, you will be giving up not only a trial but also, in most instances, the right to appeal any legal or factual issues to a higher court. I had a friend who does analyzes of handwriting do one on the handwriting samples that YESorNO post awhile back - here's their analysis:

Dylann's handwriting shows he is in arrested development. He never matured past being a selfish child. Everything is about him. Dylann is truly a sociopath with no conscience whatsoever. He has no empathy for other people, which is why he could shoot down nine people who had just prayed for him. Dylann has no warmth as a human being or sense of humor. Dylann has a persecution complex and feels the need to separate the world into "us vs. them." By hating and eradicating black people, Dylann felt it increased his self- worth - somewhat like the Aurora, CO theatre killer, James Holmes.

The thing young mass murderers have in common is they are usually isolated from family and friends and have some type of grievance "against the world." In addition, no one is actively engaging them or monitoring their behavior - just like Klebold and Harris, the Columbine killers. They should never have been able to amass so many weapons right under their parents' noses, but no one was paying REAL attention to what they were doing.

No one was paying attention to Dylann Roof either, but they are now. The sad thing is, that was part of his motivation, as in "Look at me, I am somebody." Lacking a conscience, killing was the easy way for Dylann to accomplish that desire.


Oh I see he going to plead guilty! Good! Saves the State some $$.

Grandfather Apologizes After Dylann Roof’s Guilty Pleas Add to Sentence

"CHARLESTON, S.C. — As Dylann S. Roof made what was probably his final appearance in open court, his grandfather offered the earnest apology to the families of Mr. Roof’s nine African-American victims that the Charleston church killer has steadfastly declined to make on his own.

Everyone should understand that nothing is all bad, and Dylann is not all bad,” Joseph Roof said, adding that he and his wife pray each day for the victims’ families. “There’s no way we could ever feel what they’ve felt and what they’ve lost, just as no one can understand what we’ve been through.”

The elder Mr. Roof, who occasionally attended the federal trial, said he still could not fathom what had driven his grandson to such violence in the expressed hope of inciting a race war. “I will go to my grave not understanding what happened,” he said.

The 80-minute hearing Monday effectively ended the trial-level prosecution of Mr. Roof, who turned 23 a week ago. He is expected to be transferred soon to a federal

penitentiary to await execution while appealing the death sentences he received in United States District Court..."

Will the DP appeal process start after FDRoof is transferred to federal prison? This way his new appeal lawyers can be 'near'. I can see them using the insanity defense some how....which I would not be surprised would get him LWP. He also appears to be a lot calmer in court this time....medication for life would also be presented. Wish we could read all the released information. Thanks everyone for reporting and the input.

‘Sneakiest people I ever met’: Dylann Roof loathed lawyers who tried to save him

In a scathing letter from Dylann Roof to federal prosecutors before his death penalty trial last winter, the now-convicted Charleston church killer charged his lawyers were lying to him and trying to psychologically manipulate him.

“Throughout my case they have used scare tactics, threats, manipulation and outright lies in order to further their own, not my, agenda,” Roof wrote in his handwritten three-page letter, addressed to “Prosecution” at the U.S. Attorney’s office in Charleston.

“I am writing this letter to let you know that what my lawyers are planning to say in my defense is a lie and will be said without my consent or permission,” Roof wrote in early November.

Roof’s mental state, and his relations with his court-appointed lawyers, were two themes discussed speculatively at his death penalty trial by journalists and other onlookers. But court hearings surrounding these issues were held out of of public view. Details and records concerning those issues only began being released Tuesday..."
