I don't believe that Alex is suicidal, that he intended to die, or that he was seeking to gift his surviving son $10 million. If he wanted to commit a suicide that looked like murder, why not stage it at the same location as his wife and son's murders?

I think he wanted to stage the scene of a fake attempted murder so he would appear as a victim (like wife and son). He needed a minor head injury at a location where help, such as medical evacuation, would arrive quickly.
It's all so...convenient...and looks like not a scratch on the Mercedes? Don't shoot the car because BM will want that too, in one piece? What did SLED say...7-10 casings? Do you think CES was paid well to take the chance that someone could come by and identify him? Someone said a blue pickup shows up on Google Earth at CES residence. He didn't even think to not use his own vehicle? AM couldn't find him an old junk to use for this supposed suicide-murder he wanted him to carry out? It's all so insane...ohhh is that the point!?

Court records from Colleton County showed Murdaugh had been Smith’s lawyer in a 2013 speeding case.
South Carolina lawyer arranged to be shot, police say

Harpootlian, a powerful Columbia, South Carolina lawyer who is also a state lawmaker, told Craig Melvin that he and Jim Griffin — who has contributed to a spin campaign on Alex Murdaugh’s behalf for the last week about how Murdaugh was a targeted victim in the alleged shooting — travelled to an-out-of state rehab facility to speak with Alex Murdaugh on Monday.

“It was the first conversation we’ve ever had with him where he wasn’t on opioids or oxy,” Harpootlian said. “As a result of that he clearly knew what he did was wrong.”

A law enforcement official with first-hand knowledge of the situation told The Daily Beast that Smith and Murdaugh knew each other and that Smith allegedly supplied the lawyer with drugs. Court records show Murdaugh represented Smith in a personal injury lawsuit ten years ago.

Smith, from Walterboro, South Carolina, is a former client of Murdaugh, 53, who represented him in minor traffic matters as well as a 2015 lawsuit that Smith filed against a forest management company.

i have no faith in his words.

He can only relay his client’s story — I wonder if he will remain AM’s attorney? At the least, AM put the guy in a difficult position but the attorney might have knowingly aided the plot.

Knowing something your client did is illegal kind of takes away the confidentiality aspect, doesn’t it? Maybe I misunderstand that part of the relationship.

You guys, this is not his fault! All these people have been forcing him to take illegal drugs for twenty years! They held him down and shoved the pills down his throat!

I'm still not sold 100% on him being addicted to anything other than money and power and a cushy lifestyle.

MOO
Twenty years addicted to opiods. Man oh man are there going to be an awful lot of appeals filed. It seems there's always a "but" when talking about AM...and he's always a victim. There needs to be so much more explained by him. I sure hope it's happening...probably not.

I think Harpootlian will resign as his attorney because his wife is being vetted for an Ambassadorship (Slovenia) and this case won’t help her cause

'Believed that ending his life was his only option:' Murdaugh attorney releases statement

"On September 4, it became clear Alex believed that ending his life was his only option. Today, he knows that’s not true. For the last 20 years, there have been many people feeding his addiction to opioids. During that time, these individuals took advantage of his addiction and his ability to pay substantial funds for illegal drugs. One of those individuals took advantage of his mental illness and agreed to take Alex's life, by shooting him in the head. Fortunately, Alex was not killed by the gunshot wound. Alex is fully cooperating with SLED in their investigations into his shooting, opioid use and the search to find the person or people responsible for the murder of his wife and son. Alex is not without fault but he is just one of many whose life has been devastated by opioid addiction."

*Signed, Alex Murdaugh's lawyer.

Drugs, murder, money, lies... Oh how differently this is playing out in the world of privilege where the bad guy has lawyers, a PR firm, and a lifetime of connections and protection.

I wonder if all of their cases will be reviewed
Yes! This could be one of the far-reaching outcomes. Appeals, new trials, new lawsuits. It brings everything he’s touched into scrutiny, imo. The big question is how far back does the tampering & falsification go? And how many people did he lure into the schemes over those years?

As if taking advantage of his mental illness weren’t bad enough, they have even been taking advantage of his wealth to overcharge him for said drugs. For decades.

What’s a wealthy lawyer from a rich and powerful family to do? What other options did he have?

Curious if he threw in the "Alex went temporarily blind" statement into the mix to try and explain away why he couldn't identify the shooter (that was known to him) and/or come up with a decent "sketch"... What a sad, crazy mess.

If AM admits to a suicide/fake murder/insurance scheme, why isn't he in jail along side Curtis Eddie Smith? There has to be a reason. JMO.

I think time will tell if he still has enough pull in South Carolina to stay out of jail.

Surely not, but some of these good-old-boys clusters are difficult to crack. I’m willing to bet that if this portion of the story had never become public, AM might have skated past a link to the double homicide and other crimes. Even with all of the other baggage coming to light.

Now they are forced to look more closely at everything about him. AM never expected to be put in this position — the family hasn’t been held accountable for anything for generations.

When will the Feds get involved? Aren’t there federal crimes in the mix?

*20 year opioid addiction would mean Paul (born 1999) grew up living his life with an addict for a father and role model.

Another lawyer for Mr. Murdaugh, Jim Griffin, said in an interview that Mr. Murdaugh had told the police that Mr. Smith was whom he primarily bought oxycodone from.

Mr. Murdaugh is referred to as a “co-defendant” in the charging documents for Mr. Smith; a police spokesman, Tommy Crosby, said without elaborating that the police expected to bring more charges in the case.

During the interview, Melvin pressed Harpootlian about his client’s alleged misuse of law firm money. Harpootlian said that the “vast majority” of the millions Alex took was used on drugs.

“Dick, that’s a lot of Oxy….” Melvin said.
