Her driving license was still registered in CA, IIRC. Wouldn't she need an AZ license to get AZ tags?
I wonder how she afforded car insurance. Did she for sure have any? I'm thinking of all the references she made about tickets and speeding and TA telling her she was dangerous on the road because she always had her rear view mirror tilted so she could see herself, not traffic.
The law here in California is that all licensed drivers of motor vehicles must maintain valid registration and insurance for their car(s).
If the DMV is notified by an insurance company that a policy has expired, lapsed or been cancelled, the DMV gives the registrant 30 days to provide them with proof of insurance or they (the DMV) will suspend your auto registration until proof of insurance is provided to them.
Legally, you, the driver, will not be able to re-new your car's registration with the DMV without providing them proof of valid auto insurance.
But even if your car's registration has been suspended by the DMV, and you're now in their computer jail, you can still drive your car (though illegally) as long as the license plate's colored, registration sticker for that calendar year is still current. But don't get pulled over by the cops because when they run your license plate through their in-car computer system (which they always do), you will be the next contestant on "The Jig Is Up".
But let's say you've been a super-duper driver (albeit illegal) and haven't been pulled over by the cops. When it comes time to re-new your car's registration, you will be unable to do so until you first provide them (the DMV) with proof of valid insurance. And until you do, you will not be issued a new, year-specific, color-specific, registration sticker (with a randomly assigned, computer-generated number on it which matches your DMV registration card) to affix to your license plate. And you can only go so long driving around town with an expired registration sticker on your license plate before you are inevitably pulled over by the cops for that specific reason.
But because Arias relocated to Arizona in the first half of 2007, it's anyone's guess as to whether her California registration paperwork, the year-specific registration sticker for the license plate, and auto insurance were current as of 2006 or 2007. For being in Arizona for about one year, I can totally see her driving around town keeping tabs on Travis and going to work sparingly (if only to give strangers the opportunity to walk into her restaurant to tell her Travis is cheating on her)... Oh, wait... where was I? Oh, I can see her driving around town in Mesa on expired California registration and insurance until she is pulled over by Mesa police where she gives them the excuse she's just getting settled, and all that stuff is on her "To Do" list. Because she's a Goddess and though the cops may cite her, they will probably let her go because she's presumably not drunk and there are no warrants out for her arrest.
BUT... how long did she live in Palm Desert after moving from Big Sur? A year or two? Why, then, do we see her driver's license with her Big Sur P.O. Box, and not a license reflecting her most current address in Palm Desert? Did she not even bother to change her info with the DMV to reflect her new address? What's the deal with that girl anyway? It's like she's always working the system because she is either unable or unwilling stay current with anything. Sheesh!
