I remember- especially That Girl - I loved that show!

That Girl Opening Title - YouTube

I remember my art teacher from high school said I reminded her of That Girl as I walked down the halls.

I think it was my hair- I wore it just like Marlo did in her show- in a flip. :floorlaugh:

That Girl was the original independent, feminist career girl back in the late 60's, even before The Mary Tyler Moore Show- which ran sometime in the early 70's.

And she did get engaged when the show ended, but we never knew if she ever did get married, IIRC.

Did you ever see Marlo's version of "It's a Wonderful Life" ? It was made back in 1977 entitled "It Happened One Christmas" , same story line and setting in Bedford Falls, same old mean Mr. Potter but played by Orson Wells, who unsurprisingly did a fantastic job.
The roles were reversed, IOW, Marlo played the lead role as Mary Bailey and Wayne Rogers played George Hatch. Cloris Leachman was great as the guardian angel. It was very well done, a beautiful movie IMO. I was able to finally acquire a copy a few years ago from ebay IIRC, but don't remember now if it's dvd or vhs :waitasec: . I don't know why it's not more available, never on TV either.

ETA: Oh wow, I just found part 2 of 4 on YouTube, I assume the other three parts may be there as well .

But you should know what they named their baby last year. Kim K. and Kanye West named their baby NORTH WEST. Yep, that's her name. :floorlaugh::floorlaugh:

:floorlaugh::floorlaugh:

The poor little thing- with a name like that- wonder what the mean little buggers at school will call her?

It's better than the name "whats-her-face" called her baby- "Apple".

I did see that on TV a long time ago.

Do you ever stop to relax, Bernina? :loveyou:

:floorlaugh: NEVAHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I had my day all planned this morning, went through my emails, got side lined by an article in the New York Times about Elliot Rodger...........I don't even know where on the mental spectrum you'd classify him on.......
So, I end up spending the entire morning reading his manifesto: http://www.scribd.com/doc/225960813/Elliot-Rodger-Santa-Barbara-mass-shooting-suspect-My-Twisted-World-manifesto

He was just one sick puppy....on sooooo many levels.:scared:

Fire is at 11,000+ acres, probably have a few more pop up over the weekend because people will be out camping for Memorial day, or throw their random cigarettes out the window without thinking.

I think I'm going to just do some random things today, kinda chill out! :fence:

Wow - I am only up to 5 years old in his "life story" and I have to comment. He is already making enemies in Kindergarten!! The level of narcissism displayed is astounding!

He sounds like he was and probably always was, incredibly snooty. His statement about how he was a world traveler at age 4 (5 countries) and who else can say that about themselves indicates to me that he definitely thought he was better than just about everybody.

This must be very, very, painful for his parents to read. I cannot imagine.

He just "oozes" entitlement and manipulation from an early age. And then he decides he has to kill his little brother because his brother has turned into everything he despises? Height, good looks, and an early ability to socialize and make friends?!? And what's with this "blonde women" obsession?
He really sounds and portrays himself as a creepy little b******d.
Good riddance! It's just tragic that he felt the need to take down others with him.
Just wondering who the 3 victims were in the apartment, his 2 roommates? And someone he lured?
I don't put much weight into the Aspie label his grandma gave to the press.
He sounds like a sociopath, narcissist, racist, and "American Psycho", all rolled into one.

Good writer though....just sayin.

Thanks for the update. The fire sounds super scary.

Chell, I gotta disagree with you on this one :seeya:

I am up to age 7, and his repetition is driving me bonkers.
Or maybe I am just already fed up with him referencing how "my life will take a tragic turn". We get it, you only need to say it once. :banghead:

ETA- And it reminds me of JA. Damn her for existing and for me knowing about her.
I see shades of her in so many other killers.

I wonder what happened to modesty, class etc.? Why aren't there women like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly nowadays? Grace Kelly's wedding dress was simply divine! So angelic...

Kanye West called the Kardashian family the most 'remarkable' people of our time or something like that. He was serious but it makes me :floorlaugh:
The amount of money they spent on the wedding is just astounding. I mean it is their money and worked (can't say 'hard') for it but I do wonder if having so much of it is a curse rather than a blessing? Always having to be weary of people who may only want the money, looking for happiness in material things. I bet there is a point at which it becomes a hindrance to peace and happiness.

There is so much that cannot be bought with money: God's Grace, good friends...So beautiful to enjoy the simple pleasures of life...good food, sunshine, nature, good company, reading etc. I'd much rather have a life that is luxuriously simple than one that is ostentatious. To each his own! :)

Good writer though....just sayin.

I thought he was a good writer, too. In just a literary sense, I'm enthralled to read the thoughts of a boy growing up- since I have 2 sons.
(:princes: Bernina for posting the "manifesto" :floorlaugh::floorlaugh:).

I'm only up to 10 years old and have been reading it, off and on, in between my real life tasks this afternoon- even stopped my gardening .

Since I didn't know who Elliot Roger was, I Googled and found this article with a YTube video by him (but I won't post the video here because I don't think it's right, but you can see it for yourself at the link if you want):

"California killings: Elliot Rodger's family warned police about killer's disturbing online videos before shootings and stabbings"

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...s-during-welfare-check-by-police-9432530.html

And this:

"California mass killer thought plan was over during April visit by deputies"

http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/25/justice/california-shooting-deaths/

Don't know what to make of this- haven't processed it yet, but I'm very disturbed because, according to his life in his writings- until 10 years old (haven't finished reading it yet), he seemed like a normal, everyday boy, IMO.
Maybe all the moving around, his parents divorce, his being shorter than most boys (even tho' some men are short- my older son takes after me and my father- he's only 5'9" or so, and he's not killing anyone). maybe his upbringing in California and his father being in some type of show-biz- where everyone is so "perfect" had affected him?? Or maybe the girls he met felt something creepy about him?

I always try to figure these murderers out- with no success, I might add. I guess I don't have the Murderer mentality to understand.

I'm eager to finish reading the "manifest" tonight.
I really feel terrible for the victims and their family- and also for Elliot's parents.

I feel just awful for the victims of course but also for Rodger's parents. They actually tried to warn the police about their son's disturbing threats. They must feel responsible for the death of so many although it is not their fault in the least. Lots of prayers for these poor people...

There's a good movie and book that I have seen and read, about the aftermath of a son's murder rampage and the consequences for the parents as they try to understand the incomprehensible. It's really heartbreaking and so sad (made me cry):

"A suspenseful and gripping psychological thriller, Lynne Ramsay's We Need To Talk About Kevin explores the fractious relationship between a mother and her evil son. Tilda Swinton, in a bracing, tour-de-force performance, plays the mother, Eva, as she contends for 15 years with the increasing malevolence of her first-born child, Kevin (Ezra Miller). Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, We Need To Talk About Kevin explores nature vs. nurture on a whole new level as Eva's own culpability is measured against Kevin's innate evilness. Ramsay's masterful storytelling simultaneously combines a provocative moral ambiguity with a satisfying and compelling narrative, which builds to a chilling, unforgettable climax."

"We Need to Talk About Kevin".........I read that a while back. Still hoping to catch the movie if and when it ever hits Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime.
My son's GF has a half sister with high functioning Aspergers, a form of Autism. They have always been very open about it, even with the "Social Stigma" society has with mental illness in general. I became acquainted on line with a mother who's son was diagnosed with Aspies at 15, who is an incredible young man. Aspies doesn't make a person predisposed to being violent. It's secondary conditions, like Bipolar, that can cause issues.
My personal opinion?
Until society recognizes the value of a stay at home parent, ditches the cell phone and email as ways to communicate between parent and child, pharmaceutical companies and psychiatrists are held to a higher accountability, and being mentally ill doesn't mean your "crazy"...........this will continue to happen. It's always the "cart before the horse", find blame in everything but the core of the problem.
According to many of the comments posted from various news articles, we should ban knives, cars, and guns.

BBM Is that the "normal" in a hip operation? Do you know?

Actually, the doctor in Latvia did the same thing to my mom. My doctor said he did it so it (hip replacement) wouldn't "slip" out... :scared: now THAT sounds scary!!! LOL! He said he would "fix" my height when he does my other hip; which isn't as bad as the one I got fixed; so hoping it won't be TOO soon! Feeling good today (pain at 3); the pain is in my butt near my hip, but I've asked, and it's just the healing process. :tantrum: Ouch!! Have physical therapy tomorrow again - have two weeks left per doctor's orders, but I can go to this place afterwards for a month without paying!!

Thanks YESorNO  I've put this on my book list! Now speaking of reading... (LOL! never seen this little guy! Love it!) anyway - I've finished reading Kathy Reichs' books (she's married to a Latvian, by the way!) and almost done with Patricia Cornwell books - anyone have suggestions on other authors to read?? Something of this genre! TIA!

:seeya:

I "see" 3 guests here (no members!) - come on in - the water's fine!!

So true Bernina. The core issues are never addressed. Let's just ban guns (although the bad guys will always find a way to get it and the innocent will be left without!) and whatever else we think can potentially harm us. :banghead:

At least with this boy the family knew what was going on and tried to help. In most cases even the pleas for help go unanswered by family and friends. These days people are so 'busy' using their cell-phones all day and night that I doubt most people would notice or care if their own neighbours' houses were on fire! Such a great disconnect these days...
