Mendez said there was a suitcase in the trunk of the car. Asked by Martinez if it contained "birth control items," Mendez answered yes. His answer prompted an immediate objection by Nurmi. The attorneys are now at a sidebar with the judge.

Mendez testified he arrested Arias on the morning of July 15, 2008. He said at the time of her arrest, Arias was loading items into a car.
