It’s Not Just Chris Cornell: Suicide Rates Highest Among Middle-Aged Men

by Mary Emily O'Hara

The news that 52-year-old Seattle grunge rock icon Chris Cornell had killed himself after a concert in Detroit shocked and saddened fans of the Soundgarden frontman.

But perhaps even more shocking is the fact that Cornell was scores of middle-aged American men who took their own lives on Wednesday: 121 Americans die by suicide each day, according to the Centers for Disease Control — and 93 of them are men. (The Wayne County medical examiner's office declared Cornell's death a suicide by hanging; Cornell's wife has disputed that ruling and suggested her late husband's anti-anxiety medication may have played a role.)

In fact, American men make up the bulk of suicides nationwide. Victims of death by suicide are overwhelmingly white (7 out of 10), male and — just like Cornell — between the ages of 45 and 65...

If his wife contacted the bodyguard at 12:15 and he was only 2 doors down and found Chris shortly after.....why did it take the hotel EMT person til 1am to show up? And why didn't the bodyguard remove the band in that 30min?

:welcome: to Websleuths.

A friend who was to see Soundgarden play has arrived in Ohio.( I thought concert was still to be in Detroit )
I guess the concert had a few acts. She sent me this for this morning.

TMZ reported Friday that the Soundgarden frontman fastened the exercise band to a carabiner that was used to hang himself from the top of his hotel bathroom door. Cornell reportedly jammed the carabiner so tightly into the door frame that it left and indentation.

He flew home for Mother's Day and flew back to the tour on Wednesday? How exhausting. I don't know why, but I just can't believe he knew what he was doing.

Chris Cornell Wife Vicky Karayiannis Breaks Silence On Suicide, Why It Was ‘Accidental’

“Chris’s death is a loss that escapes words and has created an emptiness in my heart that will never be filled. As everyone who knew him commented, Chris was a devoted father and husband. He was my best friend. His world revolved around his family first and of course, his music, second. He flew home for Mother’s Day to spend time with our family. He flew out midday Wednesday, the day of the show, after spending time with the children,” she said. “We discussed plans for a vacation over Memorial Day and other things we wanted to do. When we spoke after the show, I noticed he was slurring his words; he was different. When he told me he may have taken an extra Ativan or two, I contacted security and asked that they check on him.”

As much as I hate to say, I think he knew exactly what he was gonna do. Still so incredibly broken over this loss. He was amazing!

I'm sorry, but I don't understand how someone can put their family through this.....especially kids.

It's quite possible he was using again, even Rx drugs. Addicts aren't supposed to use addictive drugs like lorazepam. He seemed high as can be with that rant about burning crosses in your yard. We'll probably find that his toxicology report isn't so glaring, if it's released. If nothing else, he took a bottle of lorazepam to help him sleep while hanging.

Lorazepam, like all BZDs are rather harmless. It doesn't touch addicts of depressants. This is what I do, work psych inpatient (RN). You'd be shocked at what people take and function like you wouldn't believe. It's called tolerance.

Saturday Night Live has a 1996 episode tonight with Soundgarden as the musical guests. How I wish what happened never happened.

I personally don't think it was a good idea for CC to get back with Soundgarden for the tour .Not that anything is wrong with the other band members. While instruments don't change voices do.Chris is older now while he still sounds great, not like he once was as far as octaves.I have heard he is a perfectionist which makes it tough to perform knowing it won't be as powerful as it was in the earlier years.I do believe his anxiety was off the charts and he needed in his mind to be more medicated. After all the Soundgarden fans awaited him.He made comments in interviews that before a show alcohol would help with that anxiety.and I wonder if indeed he used again. It's a vicious cycle and recovery tells you don't do things that will allow those dark clouds to come rolling back.Any repressed feelings might have surfaced from being in that state.of mind.,then comes the disappointment.,then hopelessness..Nobody saw it coming.

Very sad news. Doesn't seem like he knew what he was doing and lost touch with reality. Side effects of Lorazepam are suicide among many. I think his family is on the right track. We'll see what the toxicology report says though.

A slightly different version where Chris takes his own Ativan. It seems he must've been acting really out of it or said something strange or out of character for his wife to pick up on the danger that fast. I feel so sorry for his family.

I have had a few times in my life when my sixth sense kicked in and I "knew" things before there was any evidence of them. It may have just been her gut instinct that something was wrong.

I don't think the pills made him suicidal.

I believe he adored his wife and children and was devoted to them. I can imagine it's true that his family came first for years now. It looks like his daughter absolutely cherished her father. Look at the pics of Chris with his family, and under the read more look at the 2016 pic of him with his daughter, but be prepared to feel heartbreak for his family's loss. How can they grasp it? I don't know if he knew what he was going to do when he flew home for Mother's Day. I can not believe he was in his right mind to knowingly end his life that way. I think it really is possible the pills had something to do with it. His wife knew it wasn't Chris that night. Prayers that somehow his family can get answers and comfort.
