The owner of the ferry company, captain and ferry staff should all be publicly hanged! This never should have happened.

South Korea Ferry: Sewol crew and captain on manslaughter charge, could get death sentence

May 15, 2014

THE captain and three other crew members of the ferry that sank off South Korea have been indicted on charges of manslaughter through gross negligence.

If convicted, Captain Lee Joon-seok of the Sewol ferry, two navigators and a chief engineer could be handed the death sentence, although that penalty is very unlikely to be carried out.

Yoo Byung-eun is also the co-founder of the predecessor to Evangelical Baptist Church, whose compound was raided Wednesday, according to court documents. He was investigated for possible involvement in the deaths of 32 members of the predecessor church in 1987. The deaths were ruled a group suicide and Mr. Yoo was cleared of any involvement.

He was jailed for fraud and embezzlement in the 1990s after he was found to have used church money to expand his business, according to court documents and government records.

As of Thursday morning, 288 people have been confirmed dead as a result of the Sewol’s sinking and 16 remain missing. Only 172 of 476 people on the ferry survived.

Prosecutors say the ship likely tipped and quickly sank after making a sharp turn because it was overloaded and unstable. The captain and three other senior crew members have been indicted on charges of homicide.

Have they found any more people?

Was surprised to see from your link that the third mate is not being charged the same as the captain & 3 others when their steering was what caused it.

What went wrong on Sewol? 5. Inexperienced crew member steered the ship.

Authorities have questioned why an inexperienced third mate was guiding the ship at the time of the accident.

That third mate is also facing charges of not abiding by emergency safety law, negligence which led to the ship sinking and causing injuries leading to deaths.

The captain and three other crew members of the Sewol, the South Korean ferry that sank last month, have been charged with murder, chief prosecutor in the investigation Yang Joon-jin said Thursday.

The captain, Lee Joon-seok, along with the chief engineer, and the first and second mates, could face the death penalty if convicted of the charges. But it has been nearly two decades since the capital punishment was last carried out in South Korea.

The remaining 11 crew members have been indicted on charges of abandonment and violating a ship safety act.

The prosecutor's office said the captain and three crew members were charged with murder, because they didn't use the ship's facilities at their disposal -- such as life rafts, life vests and announcements to evacuate passengers.
