They do not know if the boy is still alive. A camera lowered into the well found his bag of sweets and a plastic cup 78m down, Spanish media report.

If that timeline is correct, it's now 6am Monday there. So that would be 18 hours. Certainly better than the 24 hours that was rumored.

Its TUESDAY not monday now - so entering the 3rd day of search.

So we are almost 48 hours into this now. Although some media is saying only 40... but it's Noon in Spain now, so it should be 46 hours I think.

Do these parents have other children? Or just these two boys? Oh I cannot even handle the thought of them losing a second child.


Search for two-year-old boy trapped in well in Spain enters third day

Specialist machinery has been brought in to ‘suck’ away the earth which has prevented emergency service responders from confirming the boy, named Julen, is beneath the blockage – thought to have been caused by a mini-landslide as he fell – and is still alive.

Overnight, private sector experts began to install tubing in the uncased shaft on land near Totalán, a 30-minute drive northeast of Malaga, to prevent it collapsing.

Officials admitted Julen’s condition was unknown, with his loved ones clinging to the hope there was water and a pocket of air at the bottom of the well which could be keeping him alive despite a fall which has been described as the equivalent of 30 floors.

This morning’s work was geared towards continuing to try to remove the blockage 250ft down the well while shoring up the shaft.

The youngster's grandmother Reme Garcia said she was confiding in his dead elder brother to protect him from Heaven in an emotional outpouring of grief.

She wrote on social media in a heart-wrenching message to Oliver: 'Today all I ask is that your brother comes out now. He needs you.

Also from that article: "The youngster's parents, whose three-year-old son Oliver died in May 2017 after suffering a heart attack believed to be linked to a congenital heart condition, continued to pray for a miracle from a tent at the scene where they have spent the past 40 hours since their son vanished."

So tragic. This dear family doesn't deserve any more heartache.

My thoughts follow the same path as yours.

Bonds of deep compassion and love held us all together during the night we stayed up until morning, breathing hope in and out, for the Wild Boars. This thread feels the same way to me.

I join with you all in hoping and praying that this outcome will be as great. May this little boy be rescued. My heart is with his family and I share their prayers.

We need to really pray that the little boy is feet first and not head first. Being upside down causes blood to pool in the head which then inhibits the heart’s ability to circulate oxygenated blood though out the body.

Sadly, the upside down position led to the death of this individual before rescuers could free him. He was trapped in a very restricted area of the Nutty Putty cave in Utah (since closed off to explorers as there had been more than a few close calls before the tragedy).

But…. If the boy is feet first, it is a whole different situation physiology wise. Likewise, the accident occurred in southern Spain. This could reduce hypothermia risks.

Spain also has strong mining tradition in the northern part of the country going back centuries. I am praying that the expertise of mining companies and the skills of individual miners can be used to free this boy.

Early Tuesday morning, Civil Guard officers worked to remove material from the well but without success. The depth of the hole has made the work difficult and the team were only able to remove 60 centimeters of soil and rock. A robotic camera also hit another barrier of material just 80 meters under the ground.

The rescue team have now decided to excavate a horizontal tunnel to the well, taking advantage of the slope of the hillside. But time is running out to find the toddler alive. His survival is based on the belief that there is an air bubble underground. As the tunnel is being bored, Civil Guard officers are continuing to excavate the well with an air suction machine.

There's one thing about this whole thing that I find a bit odd. Maybe someone can enlighten me! The hole is pretty narrow (I think I read 25cm diameter). How come they found a bag of sweets and (I think) plastic cup belonging to the child, but not the child himself? I would have expected these items to fall down the hole more easily and have got deeper down than the child as they are smaller. Yet they have found those but no trace of the child. Doesn't that seem a bit odd?

I remember that case. They managed at one point to put some kind of harness or rope around him but it snapped. Ultimately they had to leave him where he was (after he expired) because it was just too dangerous to try and pull him out. Very sad case.

You make a valid point though. Hopefully this little boy is not upside down.

Not sure about temps inside the well but air temperatures are only 16 C (60 F) in the daytime right now, dropping to 7 C (44 F) at night.

I think inside the well it would be slightly cooler than the daytime temps but not drop much over night, staying at around 10 or 12 degrees maybe?
