The Duggar Family: 18 Kids & Counting

I saw this train wreck of a show on Discovery Health last year and I was stunned. I could not turn my head away. All the girls are dressed alike, mostly plaid dresses hanging down to their knees, sometimes matching Michelle's. And they play outside in these things. The boys were dressed a little better, from what I remember. They supposedly have no TV, no internet access, and are home-schooled. And they all play the violin. Always well-behaved. Kinda like stepford kids. Very weird. The father is a senator or something in Arkansas. There is a hilarious website called Television Without Pity that has forums on any kind of TV show you can imagine. They have a huge thread that started last year on these people. The name of the show was 14 Kids and Pregnant Again. It is hysterically funny. I highly recommend reading there.

Edited to add if anyone wants to find the thread, it is under Candid Reality Shows and it has so much activity it is usually right on the front page.

Yes, it is creepy. They look like a Christian Stepford family.

I don't believe in having children to raise other children. You can't tell me these older kids don't have to babysit or help the younger ones often, or all the time. :)

Oh, it's much worse. They assign an older child to be a "buddy" to a younger child. Basically, the older child raises the younger one, while mom and dad spend time in the bedroom.

I, say, more power to them:clap:---I;d rather see children born to loving parents who want them, and can take care of them than children born and not wanted and abused by the ones who are supposed to protect and care of them.

I've watched several shows about this type of family. I always feel so inadequate as I have 4 kids and we just can't get everything done around the house as I'd like, let alone build a huge new home... Besides that, we can't even get close to making another baby with all the interruptions half the time!!! :D

God bless 'em if they can have all those children and stay sane. I had to stop at 4 or I'd be in the room next to Andrea Yates.

OK, that was bad. :slap:

Regarding their dress. I thought they all wore basically the same thing to keep laundry simple-not because of a dress code. Religion could be the reason, but I don't recall hearing that in the documentaries about them.

According to the religion, this is how they dress. Who says the Mom does a good job of raising them, it is basically she gives birth, tends to the youngest and the others raise themselves and depend on older brothers and sisters to pick up the slack.

Sort of like having live in nannies and housekeepers all rolled into one. After all the girls need practice to take care of all of the babies they are expected to have. So they need to start young, after all their job is to be pregnant, cook, clean, teach, have babies, cook, clean, teach have babies, etc.

That is the only life they are going to have, so I can see why they are assigned buddies as parents.

Can you imagine what her body is going thru? she basically has had one pregnancy a year for the last 20 years. Her body has not had time to recoop in between babies.
I wonder if he was the one having all them babies if they would have that many lol

Have you ever met one of those pregnant moms that just thrived while pregnant? I think she's like that.

Each time I was pregnant I was anemic and nauseous for the entire 9 mos. I can't believe I spent basically 3 yrs of my life like that, even though all the children are well worth it. :D

Physically she has to be shredded with lots of ailments..loss of bladder control, for one. The thing that I wonder is children can't give other children the emotional support needed to attain adulthood so how can a child raise a child? Yes, they can change diapers and spoon feed someone else and gather toys and dirty laundry but there is so much more to raising children.

I am not against large families as I am from a large family but at a certain point true caring is not rendered when the complicated world sets in. I mean 17 children! That is chaotic and something is being missed and someone will hurt from it down the road.

I think she looks too pale all the time (but maybe it's b/c she wears no makeup) and her teeth don't look healthy. You know all that pregnancy and nursing ALL the time has to be taking a toll on her health. I hope she takes LOTS of vitamins. When in the last 20 years has her body ever belonged to HER and she's not had a child sapping all of her nutrients?

Look at it this way, we have to have someone paying into social security when we retire.:p

She seems to be pretty old to be having babies, IMO. Whatever floats her boat, I guess.

I've never watched the show and don't plan on it, but I'm not buying it that anyone is as perfect as these people are made out to be. No kids are that perfect either and I'll bet their house isn't quite as well regulated as it seems on tv. This poor woman must submit to sex with her husband every time he feels an urge or she wouldn't be PG for 10 years. I can't imagine having to do that because of religious teachings. You could never be left alone or have any time for yourself to even breath with the homeschooling and managing all the housework done by all the kids and their babytending chores. Making older kids raise the younger ones is not right and that's what they have to be doing full time 24/7. The name Quiverfull is the silliest name for a religious group that I've ever heard. Is it called that because they have a quiver full of kids?

I have watched their show on TV once or twice (I only think there were a couple of episodes where they built their house) and I agree with you TxVicki- something is up.

The mother, (who is the only one whose name doesn't begin with a J) admitted that she was "unorganized" with the first 4 kids. She had to make a plan to be organized, but seriously unless you're running a military school, how 'On top of things' can you be with 17 kids? And they're not stopping??

I hate to admit it (please forgive me) but I can't help but think they are SO corny. From their clothes and the way they speak to how the mother just keeps cooing and saying she wants more kids.... *gag* Ever see their website? I'm sorry, but the bathing suits gotta go!

I guess if it brings better people into this world, then more power to ya...

The mom's hair is sooooo weird. I read on a forum about them that someone said it looked like she'd been dragged through a bush backwards, and I had to laugh at that. If she has to have it long b/c of religious beliefs, why have the front cut in that weird style, and why not wear it up? Oh, well, I guess she (and Jim-Bob) like it like that. :D

I just wonder where all the money comes from, to have a family this large, the food bills, the HUGE, fancy house that is totally paid for. I've never seen the father actually do ANYTHING. He was an Ark. house representative for one term and supposedly sells real estate. I read that his own mom managed a yogurt store (how he met Michelle) so it doesn't sound like he comes from money. Maybe SHE does. Maybe he's one of these millionaire real estate moguls or something.

I think the idea of them is wonderful, all the kids, all the family love and Christianity. But in practice I have serious questions. And why don't they adopt needy children instead of having so many of their own?

What's with the mother's hair? Why does she wear it so long and out of style? The girls have long hair also.
