I used to think they were nuts, but after reading about them, and then watching the television specials about them, they seem to be fine folks. All of the kids seem so happy, and so very well mannered. A breath of fresh air in this day and age.

Me too Les! After seeing all the specials about them, they seem like very genuine people. I believe they are what they appear to be on TV.

Welcome baby Jennifer!!! I'm looking forward to their next show.

Well what about the fact that 16 kids put a terrible strain on global, or lack of global resources. Especially if the boys and girls from this family decide to do the same thing as Mom and Dad and have as many kids as possible. Talk about a HUGE carbon footprint. Big time.

What about individuality, all of girls are dressed the same. They are expected to take care of little brothers and sisters. Without question. Seems more like a military way to raise kids.

That 'cult' of long hair and dresses would be a religious expression...such as wearing yahlmukes or dreadlocks or a headdressing, etc etc.....
:( come on, sensitivity people, I am so surpirsed, coming from a board that is so compassionate.
Okay bash me, but I think this is incredible and to be respected. Do I think we all should do it- NO WAY- first of all we all could not do it, it takes VERY special people to be so loving. Secondly, they can obviusoly afford it and she is homeschooling her kids so its not even a burden on your taxes for education. Thirdly and finally, I have seen MANY MANY children grow up in unusual settings and be loving productive adults. How come different is always ridiculed....:waitasec:

I remember reading somewhere that this family belongs to a christian group called the Quiver Full Nation and the women's style of dress and hair is part of tradition.

Before going for the next one, if I were this chap, I would tie a lifeline to my ankle...that or a 6 foot long 2x4 across my butt! :D YIKES!

More power to them!

I saw that photo on a myspace graphic one time and it said in really big letters under the picture. "VAGINA" "It's NOT a clown car"

Maybe it is distasteful ... but I thought it was hilarious!!!

That IS funny! Still, though, as long as they aren't getting government handouts or abusing their kids in any way, I don't see anything wrong with it. They seem to be able to afford, love and care for all those kids and the kids seem to be wonderful people. You know, I only worry about the mom's health, to me she always looks very pale and washed out and I wonder if the pregnancies are taking a toll on her health...they have to be. Babies in utero & nursing take so many nutrients and vitamins from a mom's body, and this woman seems to always be nursing and pregnant. I don't think her body has belonged totally to her in over 20 years, and I think that's kind of sad to some extent. Still I suppose she has doctors to tell her if she shouldn't keep doing this at the risk of her own health, but she is over 40 now and I would think with each pregnancy and delivery the risk to her is increasing, as well as the risk of having something be wrong with the baby.

Lets do the math: 16 kids, whom have 16 kids each whom have 16 kids each.

16 kids(current) who have 16 kids each(future) = 256

256 offspring x 16 kids each = 4,096

Now each of these kids will drive a car. Heck at this rate, they can have their own little town. Each of them will use electricity, packaging, food, etc.

The earth cannot handle the current growth, with the lack of resources current and future and these people think it is a good idea to do this.

I would like to know what environmental measure they take to reduce their carbon impact on the earth.

As long as they are not getting gov't assistance, and are taking care of their own within their family boundaries where the kids are thriving and not abused or neglected, then I have no issues with them. 16 is a lot, but heck, for some people even 1 is too much to handle. If it is working for them, then so be it.

It's actually 17 kids now. This thread was started with the 16th kid. So you need to redo your calculations.

But who knows about the development both emotionally and psychologically of these children. They may not be physically abused or neglected but are they healthy mentally or just brain washed into little stepford kids.

Oh by the way in this religion, birth control is seen as the devil's work. Be fruitful and multiply is taken literally.

The girls are all expected to be homemaker under the rule of the husband.

Hey if these people make their own gas, grow their own food, slaughter their own animals, make their own clothes, generate their own power, great.

But they don't.

Where are your calculations of the couples who choose not to have kids?

I'm sure it all averages out in the end.

My calculations for the couples who do not have kids are: 2 adults.

Don't worry about the girls going to college, all they are expected to do is stay home look after the house and have as many babies as possible.

Since the boys have to support those babies, well they may be educated so they could find jobs to support them all.

You see in this religion, it does say have as many kids as you can financially support, it says, do not use any form of birth control and have as many kids as the times you get pregnant.

I am sure there may be families that have so many kids they cannot support them properly. But are forbidden to use any type of birth control.

The average childbirth rate in the USA is 3.7.

Now hearing about this kind of thing just makes me fee guilty!!! I have 3 kids and by the end of the day I can NOT wait to crawl into bed and pass out! Where does this lady get her energy from?

I know how she apparently SPENDS much of her energy!

Someone needs to show her the Lewinski technique and save her some stretch marks! :D
