It's a meat (fried chicken, meatloaf, country fried steak, etc.) and a choice of three vegetables ( maybe fried corn, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, etc.) and cornbread, of course. And don't forget the sweet tea, a must in the south. The diners have formica tables and a counter with vinyl-seated stools. The working class love to congregate in these diners and talk weather, politics, local gossip, etc. They are southern institutions and you'll find them all over the south, along with a multitude of churches, another VERY important part of life in the south!

Come visit! You'll learn about southern hospitality! :)

I'm hungry now......
I was a waiter in one in a college town, 200 yds from campus in the South. Meat and 3 with all the tea you could drink-$.99. In six months of waiting i got $.35 in total tips. MY pay $1.00 hr and a free meal.

No i was not the worst waiter in the world. Southern College kids just did not tip in the 60's.

Additionally, I think media (even local media...hell, *especially* local media) enjoys finding the dumbest sounding people they can to interview. If there is one person in a town that has three teeth in their head, dumber than a sackful of hammers, and talks like they have a huge wad of tobacco in their mouth, THAT is who they'll pick to ask questions about DNA, personality analysis, etc. Then we get saddled with that being the representative sample of our whoooole "culture".
Yes, i think you are right about this.It is a case of the media playing games hjust to back up whatever crazy idea they are trying to push at the time.I have seen a couple of real yokels being wheeled out over the last week. This is just a cliche' , nobody is silly enough to believe these people represent all southerners.I know I am far removed here but I think the fact that he is Southern has nothing to do with it. Where people originate from is not an issue to me.Haveing said that I like Karr's accent. It is cool! I think it is the only good thing about him! LOL

a funny story relating to this topic. When we first moved to Tybee Island a large whale beached and we were down watching them trying to rescue the whale and push it out past the surf.

The News channels were on the beach doing interviews. My husband who until then had never lived in the South. He was born and raised in San Francisco by Italian Immigrants. He is well educated and articulate. He spent about 10 - 15 minutes talking on camera to one of the Reporters about the difference between the beachs and marine life on The Atlantic as compared to the Pacific Oceans. At some point in his interview he uttered the phrase "We have never seen anything like this" while pointing towards the beached whale.

When the news aired that night my well educated and articulate husband was shown for 2 seconds pointing at a whale saying "never seen anything like this".

It was by far the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life.

 You're making me miss the south, where I was born...the charming drawl, the meat and three vegetables...chicken and dumplings...lemon meringue pies...front porches with swing seats...the 4th of July picnics, the fireflies, the muggy weather, I hate the west coast, it's so materialistic and shallow...now everything has to be tofu and pretentious purple lettuce...give me those mashed potatoes and chicken fried steak!

How are all of these War Eagles coming out of the woodwork all of a sudden? It's a websleuth invasion!

John Mark Karr could be gay and using his interest in little girls as a cover up. I must say that his mullet in 1992 was real cute, if you were gay back then. Actually, it looked he a racoon was stuck to the back of his dome.

I know it can be tough to be gay in parts of the South. But I don't think pretending to be a pedophile would be a helpful "cover."

And gay men never wear mullets. NEVER! They take away our membership cards if we do.

In the eighties i knew heaps of blokes with Mullets(some big , some small) I also hung around with heaps of Gay men.Not one had a mullet and there is No way any of them would grow one.Mullets were for footyplayers, hoons and Rednecks here. I do not think being Gay is easy anywhere unless you live in an arty community but it is all the harder in the country. Being a pedo would be socially unacceptable just about everywhere except when you are with 'other' pedo's. As a society we cannot let it become 'normal'. It is a taboo plain and simple. Will get off my soapbox now .:slap:

I also got the impression that his family might have been socially prominent in Hamilton. Not rich, but "respectable" & "comfortable". It might also explain the families of the girls' being willing to let him marry their daughters, despite obvivous age & personality problems. No doubt they viewed it as possibly "marrying up", not realizing they were going to be saddled with the Fredo Corleone of the Karr family.

The parents of the first wife said in their interview that they had called the police when he married their daughter. Doesn't sound like they were willing or considered it "marrying up" to me.

No, i would say they were pretty middle class people with better prospects than Karr's lot. I also think Dad was very angry and took a long time to come to terms with what his daughter and Karr did. in fact I do not think he has 'come to terms 'over it.They seem to have just put it all behind them and tried to get on. Boy, what a shock for a parent. The dad also said he went to LE but nobody helped him. Quintana met Karr when he was dateing a friends older sister. She was impressed with his Porche.I think he used all these 'cool' cars to put on an image to girls.Funny how he has graduated from Porches, Deloreans to a push bike.Don't you think?

If they called the police why didn't they file charges and get the marriage annulled right then and there? There's something missing in the story.

Hard to tell what their respective economic and social positions were 22 years ago. But I suspect the Porches and Jaguars had more to do with the family going along with what happened than not. And I don't rally buy the "I called the cops but nobody did anything" line. The only reason that might be true is if the Karr family had more clout in the town than the girl's family did. And to hell with the cops--call a lawyer.

Yeah, I think there is more to the story than we have heard. If it was my daughter in that position I'd be kicking and screaming through a lawyer also.

I would have sent the guy to Thailand with a one way ticket, if that was my daughter.
