The Boston Coastguard told the BBC on Monday that an operation to find it was under way.
It is not clear how many people, if any, were on board at the time it went missing.

Small submersibles occasionally take paying tourists and experts to view the wreck of the Titanic.
Multi day trips to the wreck cost tens of thousands of dollars and one dive to Titanic, including both the descent and the ascent, reportedly takes around eight hours.

The famous shipwreck sits 3,800m (12,500ft) down at the bottom of the Atlantic. It is about 600km (370 miles) off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

I've seen so much lack of sympathy for those onboard just because they were wealthy.
(Not here! Other places online.)

Remember that we feel sorry for Icarus, despite his hubris.

So sad to hear that a debris feild was found. :( I hope is that whatever happened was over in an instant and no one suffered. My deepest condolences to the victims families.
Agreed. I hope it was quick. I couldn’t imagine suffocating to death.

My sympathies to all affected. So sad at this outcome.

As I understand it, the Titan was two titanium hemispheres acting as endcaps, a central carbon fibre tube bolted onto the endcaps, and a syntactic foam covering to create a more streamlined shape.

I wonder, when the reports say the "rear cover" has been found, if that means just the foam covering, or if it also means the rear titanium endcap was found.

If the endcaps tore away from the carbon fibre tube that would suggest a rupture of the tube might have been the point of failure.

Interesting that Horizon Artic HAD been the mothership for OceanGate in previous years. And, Horizon Artic was the vessel that found the debris field.

The Horizon Arctic’s ROV discovered a “debris field” on the sea floor near the Titanic wreckage during a search effort Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

And, here's a link about Horizon Artic and OceanGate from 2021

The “landing frame” and a “rear cover” allegedly included in the “debris field” found in the search for the Titan sub could have been from a previous Titan dive, a spokesperson for the Explorers Club has said.

It comes after rescue expert David Mearns said he was part of a WhatsApp group involving The Explorers Club that said the debris found in the Titan search area was a “landing frame” and a “rear cover” of the missing vessel. These claims have not been confirmed.

Trevor Hale, a spokesperson for the Explorers Club told The Independent that the message that the club’s president, Richard Garriot, sent to others in a group was misrepresented.

What the debris found might suggest

Jonathan Amos
Science correspondent, BBC News

We now have an indication of the nature of the debris reported by the US Coast Guard (USCG) on Twitter.

It is a cover from the aft - or rear - end of the Titan submersible and its landing frame - the section under the sub that enables it to sit on a ship deck or on the seafloor.

This information hasn’t been formally confirmed by the USCG, but we expect it to be when the agency holds a media conference in the next half an hour.

It is bad news. It points to the scenario experts had feared right from the outset - that the Titan had experienced a catastrophic failure of its pressure vessel and imploded.

The pressure at Titanic depth is immense - some 4,000 tons per square metre.

If there was any flaw in the construction of the vehicle, this force would have exploited it.

Search teams will continue to study the area where the debris was found, looking for further fragments.

For the moment, they will just be photographing items. But at some stage, robot subs will almost certainly be tasked with bringing some of the debris to the surface.

A formal mishap inquiry will need to be instigated. It’s not clear whose responsibility that will be because this situation is very unusual, but the US Coast Guard would be a leading candidate.

The US Coast Guard is scheduled to hold a briefing in about 15 minutes, where officials will “discuss findings from the Horizon Arctic’s ROV on the sea floor near the Titanic”, according to a statement.

It comes after the US Coast Guard announced that rescue teams trying to find the missing submersible Titan reported finding a “debris field” within the search area beneath the surface of the Atlantic.

The briefing will be held by Rear Adm John Mauger, the First Coast Guard District commander, and Capt Jamie Frederick, the First Coast Guard District response coordinator.

We will be following it live here.
