Missing baby case to be heard by grand jury

The mysterious case of a missing baby will be heard by a Shelby County grand jury.

Shakara Dickens, 19, was locked up in September after claiming she gave her baby to a stranger. The baby, Lauryn Dickens, was never found, and now a grand jury will decide what happens next.

Prosecutors said murder charges are possible against Shakara Dickens, even if a body is never found.

Lauryn Dickens has not been seen since September 6th. Her first birthday would have been one week from today.

Shakara Dickens remains in jail on a $2 million bond.

I have to wonder, was she even searched for? :( They surely didn't write any articles about searches or anything. After the initial story came out, that was it as far as media coverage. Praying for justice for Lauryn.

I live less than 100 miles from there and never heard about this. How very sad. Why is there no media for this baby girl? Oh this just makes me sick.

Exclusive: What Happened To Baby Lauryn?

It's been six long months since little Lauryn Dickens first disappeared. Her mother told Memphis Police she gave away the nine month old baby girl. Until now the rest of the Dickens family has been silent.

"She told us the same thing she told everybody else. That's the reason why we went to the police. I know the story sounds amazing but Shakara was in a very difficult place at that time, having full responsibility for both children and trying to live on her own."

[snip]

Investigators didn't believe Shakara's story. Records show Shakara hadn't spoken to Benjamin Norfleet since late August. In fact, police say Shakara blocked all his calls from the jail. We were there September 21st, as police searched Shakara's Raleigh apartment and brought out evidence. A copy of the search warrant says a cadaver dog found the odor of decomposing human remains inside.

[snip]

Shakara's lawyers maintain her innocence saying without a body and new evidence the prosecution doesn't have a case. Shakara Dickens remains behind bars, held on a two million dollar bond.

Such a sad story; I do hope that Baby Lauryn is alive! I wish this was one of those rare stories where the mother is telling the truth.

You are not forgotten Lauryn!
