Details of Disappearance
Rutledge was last seen at his residence on Park Dale Drive in Nashville, Tennessee on June 8, 1998. His red four-door 1995 Plymouth Neon with the Michigan license plate number PEX-755 was discovered abandoned in the parking lot of Riverwood Apartments on Cabot Drive in Nashville, across town from Rutledge's home, shortly after he disappeared. There was no sign of him near the vehicle and he has never been heard from again.

When Rutledge's loved ones checked his apartment in the 2700 block of Park Dale Drive, nothing there indicated he had left on an extended trip. His dog was found shut in the bathroom with no food and only the toilet to drink from, something which is completely uncharacteristic of Rutledge's behavior.

He was a senior at Tennessee State University at the time of his disappearance; he adored animals and had switched his college major from computer science to biology so he could become a veterinarian. He also enjoyed playing the saxophone.

Authorities believe that foul play may have been involved in Rutledge's case. He is originally from Michigan.

On June 8, 1998, Marcus T. Rutledge left a voicemail on his girlfriend’s phone, telling her to call him back. That was the last time anybody ever heard from him.

Marcus, 23, was a senior at Tennessee State University, majoring in biology after switching it from computer science in hopes of becoming a veterinarian. Originally from Ypsilanti, Michigan, Marcus moved to Tennessee to pursue an education at his parents’ alma mater. He had a four-year-old son named Darius, who lived in Knoxville with his mother. In May, a few weeks before his disappearance, Marcus took his son to the zoo and made plans with the child's mother to throw a big carnival-themed birthday party for him in July, complete with rides and a clown. Marcus made regular trips back to Michigan to visit family, so much so that his parents left his room as-is when he was away.

When his girlfriend attempted to call him back on June 8, and Marcus didn’t answer, she knew something was wrong, so she notified his parents in Michigan and headed over to his home at 2741 Park Dale Drive in Nashville. Although nothing looked out of place or indicated he had planned to leave for an extended period of time, she found his dog locked in the bathroom with no food or water, aside from the toilet bowl. The dog had also torn the floor mat in the bathroom to pieces. According to his family, Marcus loved animals and would never have left his dog trapped in there. Also missing with Marcus was his red four-door 1995 Plymouth Neon with a Michigan license plate of PEX755.

The family called the police, fearing that their son had gotten into an accident and was stranded on the side of the road somewhere. As the hours turned into days and the days turned into weeks, it became apparent that wasn’t the case, though. About a month later, Marcus Rutledge’s ’95 Neon was found abandoned at the Riverwood Apartments at 7388 Cabot Drive in West Nashville, some twenty-one miles away from his duplex. Although the police found his car, there were no signs of Marcus or his possible whereabouts. The case quickly turned cold due to a lack of evidence, and the family was forced to explain to four-year-old Darius that his Daddy was gone.

Police believe Marcus was the victim of foul play, but no leads or evidence have surfaced in the twenty-two years since his disappearance.

Marcus was twenty-three years old, 6'0", 190 lbs., African American, and had brown eyes and short black hair.

Unanswered questions:

Where did Marcus work?

Did Marcus have a roommate in his two-bedroom duplex unit?

What friends, if any, were interviewed by police? The Tennessee articles mention he had 'just a few close friends' in the Nashville area.

Did Marcus have any connections with anyone in the area where his car was found?

"I wonder whether or not Marcus was actually into something that was bigger than he was, and he was actually trying to get away. Just to leave and leave no trace,” the missing man’s father, David Rutledge, told Mankiewicz for the podcast's "Missing in Music City" episode.

Details of Disappearance

Rutledge was last seen at his apartment in the 2700 block of Park Dale Drive in Nashville, Tennessee on June 8, 1998. He spoke to his ex-girlfriend at about 1:30 p.m., but when she tried to reach him after that he didn't respond to her calls or messages. He has never been heard from again.
Just days before his disappearance, he had visited family in Michigan for Memorial Day, and he hadn't indicated anything was wrong at the time. When Rutledge's loved ones checked his residence, nothing there indicated he had left on an extended trip. His dog was found shut in the bathroom with no food and only the toilet to drink from, something which is completely uncharacteristic of Rutledge's behavior. The dog had been in the bathroom long enough that it had eaten part of the rug.
On July 1, his red four-door 1995 Plymouth Neon with the Michigan license plate number PEX-755 was discovered abandoned in the parking lot of Riverwood Apartments on Cabot Drive in Nashville, about 21 miles west of his home, shortly after he disappeared. There was no sign of him near the vehicle and when it was processed for evidence, no indications of foul play were found.
There was a handgun in the vehicle which may have belonged to Rutledge. His ex-girlfriend stated he had had "run-ins" and "altercations" with people and may have kept the gun for protection. He was the father of her three-year-old son; he was close to both of them and at the time of his disappearance he and his ex-girlfriend were planning their son's birthday party. He also enjoyed playing the saxophone.
After Rutledge went missing, his family discovered he'd been hiding parts of his life from them. He had been a student at Tennessee State University, studying biology, and his family thought he was a senior that year, but authorities discovered he was no longer enrolled at the school and that he was selling marijuana. They believe he was a small-time dealer who mostly sold to college students. Rutledge also concealed the existence of his two-year-old daughter from his family. The morning he went missing he dropped the little girl off at day care. His family thinks he hid all this so he would not make them disappointed in him.
Prior to his disappearance, Rutledge had lived with his best friend, Athan Gibbs, but shortly before he went missing he moved out into his own apartment. Rutledge told his father that he moved because Gibbs wasn't paying his share of the rent on time and wasn't keeping the apartment clean.
In February 1999, eight months after Rutledge disappeared, Gibbs was murdered in his home. A suspect was charged, but the case was dismissed and the murder is listed as unsolved. It's not clear whether this murder is related to Rutledge's disappearance, but like Rutledge, Gibbs had been selling marijuana.
Authorities believe that foul play may have been involved in Rutledge's case, possibly from to his involvement with drugs. His family hopes he is still alive and stated would get hang-up calls about once or twice a month starting after Rutledge went missing. The calls lasted until around 2015, the year Rutledge's mother died.

**BUMPING** for Marcus and Family July 2024! I actually lived on Parkdale Drive in Nashville for 3 years. I found Marcus' case by googling missing persons in Nashville. I was shocked that it was about 3 homes away from where we were living! I still think about it often.
