Police: Ex-NBA player Wright shot to death
By ADRIAN SAINZ (AP) – 12 hours ago
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Former NBA big man Lorenzen Wright, whose body was found in the woods outside Memphis, was shot to death and the case is being investigated as a homicide, police said Thursday.
Police wouldn't answer questions about motive or suspects. But records indicate that Wright, 34, revered in his hometown as a generous and likable sports hero, was probably carrying a large amount of cash when he disappeared on July 18. A court affidavit obtained by The Associated Press also said Wright had sold two vehicles to a man affiliated with a Memphis drug ring that's suspected in six deaths.
His family filed a missing person report with police on July 22, four days after he was last seen, but investigators repeatedly said they didn't suspect foul play. Wright's mother said in the report that she was worried because his silence was out of character and "he probably has a large amount of cash on him."

Obviously we don't know yet if this group had any involvement in Ren's death, but it does look more and more like a hit. He was murdered (shot about a dozen times) along an out of the way cut off road that he used often to get to his mother's house. A barbed wire fence along that road had been cut and he was walked 100 yards out into a field from that point. So obviously the perps knew him and knew details of his movements and probably were lying in wait for him at that point. Also, a local sports reporter claimed that a few weeks ago, Ren's x wife had three armed men knock on her door asking if he was there. (He was in Atlanta at the time).
One thing I haven't heard discussed here locally is the question of who was driving him, because he had not rented a car upon arriving in Memphis from the airport and had friends driving him around. I guess someone could have loaned him a car, but I haven't heard anything about that yet. The focus here locally is why the Germantown 911 call was not investigated further the night it was placed, July 19th. People here are up in arms over that one.
