I think they are only out of school because they have kept them out of school to shelter them on purpose, not because there schools aren't in session. Winter break for there age group in the US typically end Jan 2. So they would have been in school the entire length of her trip. When she went missing , I think they pulled the kids from school to shield them.

I think you misunderstood, I was saying she might not have wanted to go in the summer because in the summer the kids would be out of school and need more times and attention. (This was before the talk of them being homeschooled came up.)

I just glanced though and didn't see it although I could have missed it, does anyone think that T.K. could be making up the consensual sex knowing that they will find his DNA since theywhere able to find and talk to him?

Yes we did discuss this extensively up thread. I can't remember the post numbers. It was about why he would tell them that and it could only be because he is the murderer or they did have an affair.

If you watch Law & Order, the defense makes this claim every other week.

I had not watched this video from Fox News. It interviews the friend, but does not address the question of when she decided not to go on the trip.

However, I learned three things:
1) Sarai homeschooled her sons (can't tell if the reporter says 'son' or 'sons')
2) she planned her life around the boys
3) Istanbul has a sophisticated video surveillance system throughout the city

Interesting! Thanks.
I was aware of Istanbul's extensive surveillance.

But not the other stuff. I was just thinking perhaps one or both of her boys have a type of learning disability or delay and that's why she had pulled them out of public and decided to homeschool. It could also explain why this family has chosen to take so long to tell them anything. Just a thought.

I will just say that some of the skirts and heels I see on young Istanbul women in pictures, puts London and Paris to shame. That said, I don't think we can yet blame gender inequality for Sarai's death. While gender bias in Turkey is far behind the EU and US, it's stupid to place blame before having all the facts.

What sort of jumped out at me is that Canan Gullu, the chair of the Federation of Women’s Associations in Turkey wrote not from a place of speculation, but as if she knew with certainty why Sarai was killed.

As anyone who's spent more than 5 minutes on this thread knows, there is nothing that any of us (except for MAYBE LE- and that's a big maybe) can know for sure regarding Sarai's death. When people speak with such certainty about issues they cannot yet know as fact, it tends to make them lose credibility. That's a shame, as is appears the person's heart is in the right place, and that the goal really is to raise awareness about domestic violence. A worthy cause, for sure.

Not sure Sarai is the appropriate voice for the domestic violence movement in Turkey, though. We need to know what led to her death first.

Kmassoud, THANK YOU, I said this in the previous thread two or three times, that should could have carried gold. There is also a market for smuggling antiquities out of Turkey which I also mentioned. Personally, I think if she smuggled something voluntarily, it would MUCH more likely have been gold or antiquities.

Agreed, there are MANY ways an American would be truly inspired to carry both these things out of a lower-socio-economic country without feeling they are compromising their values (while also making easy money). At this point, I would maybe be open to carrying antiquities out of Egypt....simply because I know they will be safe in the US for an extended period of time and I value history.

Americans have little conception of how important gold is in most of the world. I know, because my brother-in-law-dentist who worked on my teeth went to the nearest gold-buyer to sell my the gold crown I had gotten from a dental school within minutes of removing it. Gold is sacred in countries that don't trust or understand a basic banking system. I know Turkey isn't as backwards as Egypt...but they aren't exactly Western Europe either.

As we don't really know anything I focused on the opposite. I don't know why this should help but anyway. Feel free to add.

The facts that Turkish LE probably knows but we don't:

  • Exact timings of her flights? Journey to Munich? Details about it.
  • How many phones she had? List of phone calls & people
  • If she went out on 20th? Is there surveillance video when she is with Taylan? Is there a visible tension or anything?
  • Taylan's and Airbnb guy's first statements to police? Were they at work/school at that time?
  • What SS done after bridge 12.10 until she arrived Sirkeci 13:15? It is a 15 minute walk. Took photos? Eat? Shopping? Wandering around? Went to a cafe to use wireless? Did she meet with anyone? How much of it is in camera recordings?
  • Is she alone in the last footage.? Is she looking like she expects someone? Does she look like she knows where she is heading? Taking photos?
  • Is anyone suspicions seen in the surveillance?
  • When she was found, was shoes on? Jeans how close to her? Bag? Exact position of jewelry? Anything else found?
  • Who are that 22 people? Did police learn anything from questioning them? Has any of them admit seeing her around?
  • Her iphone & ipad tracked?
  • How much we know about other people (IGs) that said she has been talking to? What do we learn from her gmail?

Actually most countries that covet gold is due to the poor. A king system. India is one. Those gold bangles and necklaces aren't just pretty, they are part of the worth of a family.

Well the Patriot missiles were taken to Turkey right before her visit- there got to be a connection! J/k.

What her family and friends told investigators.

I didn't comment on the coffin having helped handled my Grandma's, the cost of coffins are outrages- and why I want to be cremated.

Since you've been in the US, I'm sure you know that since Turkey isn't in news here perceptions come from the thought that all Middle Eastern countries(yes Americans think Turkey is in the MidEast) are the same. Not helping matters is our view if Muslim countries are places to fear. I often wish the news or PBS would do more programs about life in those countries. But perhaps if Istanbul wins the 2020 Olympic bid, things will change.

Believe it or not, in the US, I was just some foreign dude regardless of what people thought of Turkey. In Europe, I am "that barbarian Turk" to them.

My angle with the casket was different. It was a temporary casket used for transportation because Christians in Istanbul (mostly Armenians) are burried in nice caskets made for them. Yet they wouldn't want to move SS's body in a bag. So they must have gotten that casket in the last minute.

On the other hand, it is different for Turkish Muslims. Muslim Arabs believe the soul will live forever but body should return to soil. So they just dig a hole and bury their dead, and mostly forget about them, ie. AFAIK. (Because souls are everywhere) Turkish Muslims also believe in that but they also respect the body due to their Asian/Ancient Anatolian roots. So they make tombs, at least tombstones as if they are going to bury the dead in a coffin. But they don't. They open those plain, unlacquered coffins, and place the body in the ground. So years later we have these tombs with bodies long decomposed into soil. And we (try to) visit them regularly. Modern Turkish culture is an amalgam of many cultures: islamic, cenral asian, anatolian, and even western. So we have these values that may seem contradictory at first sight. So a casket is only as good as a body-bag for Turkish Muslims.

This headline and article is totally unnecessary and disrespectful to SS and her family. How dare they state something like that not knowing facts! DM should be ashamed.

I'm not exactly sure where Daily Mail gets their sources from, but I am pretty sure that they are extra careful when it comes to information. I find they are my daily source of news (and yet I'm obsessively stalkerish and double-check everything!) and rarely do I find that their information is blatently wrong or mis-informed.

Hate me for saying this or not....but I RARELY take news for granted, and am in a constant state of teaching my students to take NOTHING for granted (even textbooks). But still, Daily Mail can rarely be accused of sensationalizing news. It appears to me that they review several viable sources before saying much of anything. I don't know if it's because they know they are at risk in the UK of being senstational or not.....but I can't think of a single article they are totally misguided on (and I've been reading their stuff for almost a year).

Here's a quote from the friend about not going --- still doesn't address when she decided not to go, earlier on or at the last minute:

Sounds like she has a job now, maybe she got a job around that time or she was hoping to get interviews etc.

True, its like another banking system.

I never understood people saying her gold jewelry wasn't more valuable that ipad/iphone. It is very easy to sell gold in istanbul. A drug addict would take gold too.
