Maybe if mental health treatment was available and accessible where needed, this kind of thing would not be so prevalent.

True, but way easier said than done.

Mental Health treatment requires the patient to seek treatment and follow through with the suggested therapies and meds.

And quite often , those who need it the most are in denial or in defiance of doing so.

I agree that treatment needs to be more accessible. My family had a very difficult time trying to keep my brother in treatment. It usually took a major event or incident, in order to get him hospitalised. And then it usually only lasted 3 to 7 days in treatment there and then to halfway houses.

And since he had the legal right to leave the houses, he almost always did, very quickly. So it is not easy to treat people with serious mental illnesses if they are not compliant, and usually the illnesses prevent compliance, imo.

That is why people used to be forced to stay for treatment. But we don't do that anymore. And I think our homeless camps and shelters and jails become full of people who really should be in treatment instead. JMO

I agree with everything you have said, but now this young man has gone beyond his freedom and needs to be put into an environment where he is safe and the world is safe from him.
Was your brother a pot smoker in his adolescence?

I agree that DB needs to be somewhere safe. But the problem is, if he is placed in treatment and then given meds and takes them regularly, he can then be released. Will that mean he is 'safe' to go back into the world with us?

I don't think so. He just stops taking the meds and he is back to his delusions pretty quick.

And Yes, my bro smoked a lot of pot. But so did I and our older brother. And only my little brother ended up with schizophrenia.

His doctor once asked my mom if she had ever been seriously ill during her pregnancy with him. And she had been briefly hospitalised with pneumonia at that time. The doctor said there are studies showing that serious illnesses during pregnancy can be a factor, as can head injuries to the patient.

And he was a downhill ski racer as a teen and had several concussions. But he also smoked a lot of pot.

He had a very sudden onset of some manic phases at around 19/20. Then a total meltdown requiring hospitalisation ...:(

Police have charged 18-year-old Darriynn Ronnell Brown with capital murder over the death of four-year-old boy Cash Gernon after new lab evidence came to light.

The charge comes four weeks after Gernon was allegedly snatched from his bed before being found stabbed to death on a Dallas street on May 15.

Brown was already facing kidnapping and theft charges filed last month, and reportedly tried to snatch two-year-old girl in February but was thwarted then.
 
On June 9, Dallas police said evidence submitted to the lab has been returned linking Brown to Cash at the time of his death. A motive for the crime has not been released.

I look forward to seeing what specific evidence they have of this nature. Could be DNA he left on the body, could be blood or other DNA found on DB belonging to Cash.

I hope some of the wilder speculation dies a quiet death in this case now that these charges are laid.

This might be a really interesting case in terms of seeing how the evidence was gathered and pieced together to show what happened. That's how we learn for the next cases we discuss.

@MsLGinNC sbm That's one possible conclusion. Respectfully I doubt all the evidence is in for the prosecution.
The capital murder charge indicates - LE & prosecutor have collected & analyzed
sufficient evidence to file that additional charge. Not necessarily that they've collected & analyzed all the evidence for a judge or jury to find him guilty at trial beyond a reasonable doubt and convict him of capital murder.

A 'gold medal' in criminal prosecutions is rarely earned by approaching as a sprint but more often as a marathon. my2ct.

Well, there is enough evidence to charge him with the crime they'd been holding off on...and that is tremendously important. That there is more, I don't doubt. That the defense is going to take a strong stance on this, I don't doubt either. But it's harder to argue things are "pure conjecture" when they're concrete and can be backed with science.

This is not over by any stretch of the imagination. In a lot of ways, this part is worse.

snipped for focus... i dont think that happens. if they are unable to assist in their defense, they send them to the state hospital to get their meds right then send them back to county of offense for trial and court. of course, many usually start refusing their meds and the cycle repeats. but they dont just let them out.
 
TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO THE ARREST OF A WANTED FELON.
On June 10, 2021, deputies with Constable Mark Herman's Office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 2700 block of North Sam Houston Parkway West. The driver was identified as Trevor Gernon.
Further investigation revealed he had multiple open Felony Warrants for two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, two counts of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and Fraud.

"Trevor Allen Gernon was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail for the Felony Warrants. His total bond was set at $115,000.00 out of the 178th District Court." - Constable Mark Herman
