just read former army doc's perspective on "steevo's blog" and he said that morale is pretty bad in general with the army docs. many are biding their time waiting to finish their service commitment. shooter doc received full ride at army/taxpayer's expense including a longer fellowship than i earlier surmised. the fellowship was 5 years (i thought 2 - 3) in addition to 4 yrs med school and 4 yrs college. so after finishing his psych fellowship, he would have had at least a 7 year service commitment and poss up to 9 yrs due. that was about 2006, so he now has 4 to 6 years of medical service owed to the army. it is extremely difficult to get an early release from this obligation. apparently, another physician brought a gun to walter reed some years back and threatened to shoot a superior. he lost his medical license and i don't know what else. from what i read, it seems that most of these obligated physicians are very unhappy and it is common to try to get an early release...so it seems the army has a rather hardened and/or cynical view toward those seeking "separation" before "contract" is up
