YUa mean like the boy who cried wolf?

No not nassasarily. But maybe he thought, well if they are not going to discharge me, then i will "give" them a reason to discharge me.

Be interesting to know when he went to bat with his lawyers, to get discharged. And when he began making these red flag movements. How did the two coincide?

True, I have seen some crazy stuff go on from soldiers and their spouses trying to keep them from deploying. Everything from wives getting pregnant, to blowing their house up. I know one family, the husband was deploying in about 18 days, they got the wild idea that if the house was burnt down he couldn't go. WRONG! The lived in a row housing complex of five families. They loaded the kids up, turned the elect. stove top on, sat a dish towel very close to the burner, and went to walmart. They got a call that their house was on fire, imagine that!!!

Difficult decisions to be made when the government spends almost 1/2 million dollars (taxpayers) on an education for someone... then they want out.

The more I read about this guy, his thoughts, ideology, the type of wife he wanted. It makes me wonder why he wasn't living in a Muslim country. Oh that's right, he also liked the benefits of living in the U.S. as well. I wonder how many 7-11's there are in Iran that you can go to at 6:30am without the fear of getting bombed? How many anti-Muslim internet posts could he make there, like he did anti U.S internet posts here, before the Iranian govt rounded him up and executed him? He sounds like the typical wack job that's usually behind mass killings. He wanted what he wanted, wasn't getting it, was frustrated that no one "got him", and it's everyone else's fault.

ETA: Thanks dgfred for the reminder.....add getting a free education here!

With all Hasan's pro bombing and Muslim extremist talk on the internet and off, i'm surprised they kept him in the military at all. The FBI should have had him on their watch list for crying outloud, it's insane!

SuziQ, you hit the nail on the head (in my opinion). I couldn't agree with you more.

TexasMist, I remember 9-11. It too seemed like a beautiful day. I remember riding to work that morning around 7:30 and the sky was beautiful. Blue with a scattering of clouds. You never would have dreamed that that day would turn out to be one of the most horrible in history.

the mood in Austin & surrounding area today is, understandably, very sombre....DBF & I were listening to KVET-FM this morning, and Fridays they are usually big cut-ups...they had a pie-in-the-face planned for one of the guys who lost a bet, and their usual whacky/weird songs..

But today, out of respect, they are reflecting on events from yesterday & how it continues to effect the community & nation today.

Prayers for all the military men & women and civilians who are struggling to deal with the senseless slaughter.

MASON, OH (FOX19) - A Mason, Ohio woman says a phone call from her husband during a shooting rampage at Fort Hood was "insane."

Melissa Berry received the call from her husband, Josh, an Army soldier stationed at Fort Hood, on Thursday afternoon.

"He called me and said, 'Honey, someone's shooting in the building I'm in. I love you.' Then, he said nothing else but kept the phone on," said Melissa. "It was insane...like nothing I could describe.

"(There was) a woman over the intercom saying, 'We are being fired on, we need assistance,'" Melissa continued. "I think he truly thought he was going to die."

Someone here was OUTRAGED yesterday because Obama called Ft. Hood a BASE and not a POST.

I was just watching CNN and the reporter/anchor whatever she is called Ft. Hood a FORT!

LOL...this one is technically correct.....Ft. Riley in Kansas and Ft. Leavenworth are both frequently referred to by local citizens and military personnel as "the fort", while anyone referring to McConnell Air Force base in the same shorthand speech would refer to "the base".

just read former army doc's perspective on "steevo's blog" and he said that morale is pretty bad in general with the army docs. many are biding their time waiting to finish their service commitment. shooter doc received full ride at army/taxpayer's expense including a longer fellowship than i earlier surmised. the fellowship was 5 years (i thought 2 - 3) in addition to 4 yrs med school and 4 yrs college. so after finishing his psych fellowship, he would have had at least a 7 year service commitment and poss up to 9 yrs due. that was about 2006, so he now has 4 to 6 years of medical service owed to the army. it is extremely difficult to get an early release from this obligation. apparently, another physician brought a gun to walter reed some years back and threatened to shoot a superior. he lost his medical license and i don't know what else. from what i read, it seems that most of these obligated physicians are very unhappy and it is common to try to get an early release...so it seems the army has a rather hardened and/or cynical view toward those seeking "separation" before "contract" is up

You don't see any trying to get out before they finish their free medical education. Reminds me of those doctors who, the minute they get their medical credentials, divorce the wife who worked to put them through school.
BTW We, as U.S. citizens, are the ones paying to put these doctors through school to serve our troops. We are the ones who want our soldiers to have the best medical and psychiatric care possible. Military physicians are obligated to us for their education.

yes, i agree the docs obligation is to us as americans, for sure, in addition to our wonderful soldiers!! i hope my last post didn't seem to be in support of the shooter. it was not.

Sgt. Kimberly Munley is a hero. How many more would he have killed if she hadn't taken him down? This says he is paralyzed. And the shame to be taken down by a brave woman! Gives me goosebumps! Thank you Sgt. Munley for saving many more lives!

link had changed. Don't know if this is exactly the same or not.http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/fort-hood-shooter-maj-nidal-malik-hasan-calm/story?id=9012995

What a brave woman! I think it's great he's paralyzed!!!

oh, and i do believe the morale of medical corp in army needs to be improved in order to provide the best possible care to all of our current and retired enlisted men and women! this issue must be addressed. the army is having a very difficult time recruiting and keeping physicians. it is a crying shame. maybe this horrible incident will light a fire under somebody in a position to effect change

There are a shortage of civilian physicians as well. I think as long as the military is willing to pay for medical degrees, there will be people lining up to accept the offer. Unless the military can ferret out early the ones who aren't sincere about living up to their end of the bargain, or allow them out early at our cost, I'm not sure what could be done.

Obama is an idiot! His speech about the Fort Hood shooting was 13 seconds about the shooting and the rest about the economy!

He'll catch hell......

Nah, he probably won't. He hasn't done anything wrong yet has he?

Personally, in a time like that I'd much rather hear what those involved have to say.
