Stephenville, Texas (CNN)The trial of the man accused of killing Chris Kyle, the protagonist in the top-selling book and hit movie "American Sniper," began Wednesday with a lawyer using Kyle's own words to bolster an insanity defense.

Eddie Ray Routh is accused of killing Kyle and Kyle's friend, Chad Littlefield, at a firing range at Rough Creek Lodge, about 90 miles southwest of Dallas on February 2, 2013.

In his opening statement, defense attorney Tim Moore read a text Kyle sent to Littlefield about Routh as the three men rode in Kyle's pickup truck to the range.

My only hope is that if ERR is found not guilty that they put him in a mental hospital and make him STAY there for good.

Agree. I have surprised myself. To date, I think the Defense has a good, fair case. We'll see where it goes.

Yes, he definitely needs to be put away for good! Personally, I think the only way to make sure that happens is prison.

I agree! I can't believe how much he had been in and out of mental hospitals in the last few years. The VA and Green Oaks failed him. I mean wow only 1 week earlier he had been released after holding his girlfriend up with swords. I wish when Chris sent that text to Chad saying "this guy is straight up nuts" that they had turned the truck around! Gives me chills just thinking about that truck ride. Either way however this trial goes ER is a danger to society IMO and I hope too that he is locked up somewhere. Sad that his mom begged the hospital to not release him that week earlier...
