Texas School Shooting: 10 Dead, 10 Hurt, and Many Not Surprised It Happened

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/18/us/school-shooting-santa-fe-texas.html

From the link:

SANTA FE, Tex. — A nation plagued by a nightmarish loop of mass school shootings watched the latest horror play out in this small southeast Texas town Friday morning, as a young man armed with a shotgun and a .38 revolver smuggled under his coat opened fire on his high school campus, killing 10 people, many of them his fellow students, and wounding 10 more, the authorities said.

By the end of the day, a 17-year-old suspect, Dimitrios Pagourtzis — an introverted student who had given off few, if any, warning signs — had surrendered and been taken into custody. Law enforcement officials said they found two homemade explosive devices left at the school during the rampage, which Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas called “one of the most heinous attacks that we’ve ever seen in the history of Texas schools.”

I think the fact that people are on a message board like this that discusses the worst of the worse, cases where people are abducted and tortured and murdered. Serial killers. People are born this way and then they experience life different than everyone else. Events that wouldn't set a neurotypical person off, set them off, and they go on to commit atrocities. There are people who are truly born to kill

Blaming "coddling your children" is as stupid as Dan Patrick blaming the school having too many entrances and exits.

We need to prevent people from getting guns. GUNS ARE THE PROBLEM. Period. We need to punish the parents who allowed their weapons to be taken, who didn't secure them. They need to be charged with a serious crime.

RBBM -

You said "there are people who are truly born to kill' and you also say "guns are the problem". I respectfully disagree with you regarding your statement that guns are the problem. However, I agree with you about guns owners securing guns. I don't know the answers or how to stop this from happening, but IMO taking away the right to bear arms is not the answer. It's so heartbreaking to see this happening over and over again. I for one would feel a lot better with metal detectors in every school and sending my kid to school knowing the teachers were armed and fully prepared if they were in an active shooter situation. If I was a teacher I would want to carry. I would have never guessed that being a teacher would one day become a dangerous job.

I wonder what the gender ratio will turn out to be?

This page has some of the names listed. Looks to be more females than males at this point.

A list of Santa Fe High School shooting victims

https://www.khou.com/mobile/article...fe-high-school-shooting-victims/285-554801644

“These are the fatalities we can confirm:

Sabika Sheikh

Angelique Ramirez

Kim Vaughn
Ann Perkins - substitute teacher
Kyle McLeod

INJURED

John Barnes

Rome Shubert”

They had a story about Rome, he was shot in the back of the head/neck area and didn’t know it. I believe he was treated and released. John Barnes is the officer who engaged the shooter and was critically injured.

Well, Greg, the recent terror and death from the Austin Bomber was pretty bad, too. When are you going to do your part to stop it?

‘Please Pray’: Santa Fe Is a Town That Has Long Found Comfort in Faith

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/18/us/prayer-santa-fe-high-school.html

From the link:

In Santa Fe, where football players appeal to the Lord before Friday night games, where church on Sunday is all but a given, where the school district once went all the way to the Supreme Court to preserve the right to sponsor prayer, these expressions of faith are not mere words, but salves.

On Friday, inside the high school, the students turned to prayers for protection. As gunfire roared through the hallways, several students hid in a classroom, forming a prayer circle.

CNN just reported this is the 22nd school shooting in the US so far this year. Good grief.

Santa Fe High School student 'completely okay' after being shot in the head

https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/18/us/rome-shubert-texas-school-shooting/index.html

From the link:

Doctors told Rome Shubert, 16, he had the "perfect scenario."

A bullet sliced clean through the back of the Santa Fe High School sophomore's head during a shooting that left 10 people dead and 10 others, including Rome, wounded. Remarkably, he walked away with just bandages, and said on Twitter he was "completely okay and stable."

‘We Should Not Have This in Common’: Santa Fe and Parkland Students React to Shooting

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/18/us/santa-fe-parkland-shooting.html

From the link:

To Paige Curry, a student at the Texas school, Friday’s tragedy was unsurprising.

“I was thinking it was going to happen eventually, it’s been happening everywhere,” she said in an interview with KPRC, a local television station.

That might be because it was only three months ago that the school in Parkland, Fla., was similarly terrorized.

Kaitlyn Jesionowski, a survivor of that shooting, in which 17 people were killed, first saw news of the Friday attack on Twitter on what was the last day of school for seniors at Marjory Stoneman Douglas. For Ms. Jesionowski, it all came rushing back: the fear, the anxiety, the stress. “I started replaying what happened to us in my head, over and over.”

I am starting to ponder if something had happened recently

he was on the football team that is a social skills entitiy

apparently he was on the honor roll --

he picked the art class for a reason I would think

my first gut was relationship but then when I heard about bombs that faded but now I learned none of the bombs had anything meaningful in them

so basically it was a scare tactic

the art class is somewhat haunting imo

did his posts take a sudden dark turn ?

Onset leading to today kinda feels like it was in response to something as opposed to brewing

just wondering

honor toll and sports and mass murder do not seem like the classic recipe????

ANyone know when this school had prom??

on a lighter note i went with two girls and the man who bought me out -- talk irony!

COntinuing with a touch of levity I just noticed that Don Lemon is in england ( I would suppose for the wedding _ I thought i bet he begged for the assignment what gay guy does not love a big ceremony - hey that is just what went through my mind

i crack myself up at times - literally

still chuckling at the thought about Don !!

Sports world reacts to deadly shooting at Santa Fe High School

http://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id...d-reacts-deadly-shooting-santa-fe-high-school

From the link:

Houston Rockets point guard Chris Paul turned his attention Friday to offering condolences to the victims of a mass shooting in Santa Fe, Texas, that left 10 dead, saying the attack overshadows his typical focus on the NBA playoffs.

"First and foremost, aside from the playoffs going on, which is minor compared to what is taking place down in Santa Fe," Paul told reporters as the Rockets practiced in Houston. "Our prayers going out to the victims and the families having to deal with that situation. We have a lot of fan support there. Those people come out and support us night in, night out. This is minor compared to what those people are dealing with."

i think we need to be careful not to excclude social media it is horrible stuff

down the road the consequences are going to become clearer

were social animals just like dogs SM is so not that that in and of itself is isolating

and I would assume exhausting no down time folks are relentlessly getting things off their to do list that is a stresser

if it did not exist probably the endless refrain that we knew nothing would be diminished

SM is kids talking their feeling states out in the past to other human beings now days it is to a keyboard which has no feelings etc

I have teased anita ( who is addicted ) that if I emailed her a long email about my leg being bit off by an alligator her response would be

that must be terrible --

that is not a dialog --responding to each others texts and nonsense in and of itself is getting something off the list

it is minimizing.

I know I know it is a surprise I can be long winded! That for me has pretty well ceased - I dont like it one bit when i had taken time to communicate something and get a five word response

I despise typing! Using u instead of you sure feels like you are not giving me much attn now does it !

I hid a neighbors phone once had to end the joke earlier was concerned about a fatal heart attack

it is obnoxious

anita cant help but check her phone during theatre ( i quit going with her)

would any of us have bought a book to the dinner table how about the movies sitting in a car with other people

at traffic lights i look around and everyone is on a phone i have a big mouth what the hell is everyone talking about nonstop

going to the grocery store , in the past was not a group activity !! Mostly males (to avoid the doghouse after coming home with a rosa tomato as opposed to a regular tomato!)

at times in the grocery store look around you will find many males on the phone verifying what she is demanding. On that level it cracks me up

"social" media could be nothing further from the truth their is nothing social about walking around with ones head endlessly looking down with what is in essence an keyboard -- if someone was walking around with a calculator nonstop would that fly?

Next time your at a restaurant take note. Especially young people. I have always thought jezzzz if you all wanted to talk to other people why not invite them with you?

meeting Tom for dinner while you want to talk to Bill seems pretty flat out stupid to me !!

moo

I have hated all this stuff from the onset never had a cell phone never wanted one no facebook had only started to mess with twitter cause of the white house

has been a HUGE issue (me refusing to have cell) with step mother "what if something happened" well things happened 50 years ago -- were people missing funerals on a regular basis?

Car wreck - if she lived nearby (god forbid!) and I got in car wreck as far as I know she is not a trauma surgeon (!) so outcome would not be impacted

if you have not seen an active shooter drill go to YT it blew my mind seriously go watch one that in and of itself is trauma

in Parkland it really bothered me to see how cops came into kids classrooms screaming at the top of their lungs get down get down

people approaching other people with guns aimed at them in and of itself is traumatizing

being screamed at in and of itself is traumatizing

well i think rant is over

well that may not be accurate i have come back three times to add to this !!!!!!

i am so over this nonsense and all this foolishness about hardening our schools this is not a war zone (well at least it is not supposed to be)

i had better stop my rant at this point

I agree, but....... I live in a Third World Country with all kinds of issues. Poverty, alcoholism, unemployment, child sex abuse, domestic violence.

Each village has free internet for people to use. Kids have minute phones and I guess some other access as they are always on their phones as well as the adults.

They all have FB. They love the livestream.

You know what they do not have? Access to guns. Not allowed except for hunting and target shooting. Then they are kept at the police dept.
