Houston police wanted to talk to 26-year-old Ryan Mitchell Smith Monday night because his father is reportedly missing.

Smith led police on a pursuit that ended at the Houston Polo Club on the northwest side of Memorial Park, according to HPD.

Investigators said he then ran into the woods and disappeared.

It's important if you live or exercise in the area to pay attention to your surroundings.

Smith is currently out on bond after a run-in with police on Saturday, Jan. 22. He is accused of stabbing an HPD K-9 with a knife.

K-9 "Nate" is OK and recovering at home, according to police.

Smith was charged with evading arrest and interference with a police service animal, but bonded out of jail.

HPD investigators said they wanted to talk to Smith Monday night because his father is missing.

Officers located Smith on Houston's westside near Briar Forest and Dairy Ashford and, according to investigators, he was driving his father's truck.

That's when Smith took off, and eventually ditched the truck at Memorial Park before running off into the woods, police said.

Officers said they found a gun in the truck after Smith ran off.

Radio traffic audio captured the moment officers were trying to arrest Smith overnight.

"Homicide 3494. Hold the air. We have a potential kidnapping suspect on the run. He is in a black Denali GMC. He is going to be on Dairy Ashford, 500 block of Dairy Ashford," an officer reported. "He has no plates on the car. A potential murder suspect."

Police led on chase after seeking to question HPD K-9 stabbing suspect in father's disappearance

Ryan Mitchell Smith: Man Stabbed Houston K-9, Police Say - The Hiu

This article has the best reporting I've seen so far but it's not up to date. Here's what we've got so far.

Jan 22 06:30 - Smith's mother calls 911 to report that son left house saying he was looking for guns and that he wanted to kill himself.

Jan 22 07:50 - Police respond to a call in which Smith attempts and fails to carjack a vehicle. Smith flees to a grocery store, steals a phone charger, then flees to a parking garage.

A canine officer (named Nate) pursued Smith in the parking garage and was stabbed with a butcher knife by Smith. Smith goes to jail, the K-9 goes to the Vet. The k-9 survives, YAY! Officer reports that Smith seemed to be suffering a mental break.

Jan 23 - Smith bonds out of jail.

Jan 25 - News stations are reporting that Houston Police Officers are searching for Smith at Memorial Park and have thus far been unable to find him. They attempted to pull him over to speak with him about his MISSING FATHER and he fled, ditching the vehicle (HIS MISSING FATHER'S TRUCK) and running into the woods at the park.

I'm worried about where this story is going. :(

Great summary. Oh boy, you’re right. This we know already: unhappy ending…

Police are currently charging Ryan Smith for evading, but more charges could come after an autopsy for the body found Tuesday.

Houston police believe a body found at a Memorial-area home Tuesday morning belongs to a man whose son led officers on a chase overnight.

The son, 26-year-old Ryan Smith, is also accused of stabbing a police K-9 during a foot pursuit in an earlier incident over the weekend.

It was the stabbing incident, police say, that led to a chain of events that, as of late Tuesday morning, continues with an ongoing search for Smith.

According to Commander Kevin Deese of HPD's Homicide Division, Smith bonded out of jail for the stabbing incident on Sunday, at which point, family members brought him to his father's home in the 14700 block of Carolcrest Drive, near Memorial Drive.

Deese said on Monday, family members grew concerned after the father, who was the lone occupant of the home, disappeared without taking his cell phone. Relatives did a search at the home where there wasn't anything out of the ordinary found except for the father's truck also being gone.

Update: Body found in Smith's father's home. Smith has still not been located.
Ryan Mitchell Smith wanted: K-9 stabbing suspect's dad found in Houston Memorial home after 26-year-old led police chase - ABC13 Houston

After Smith bonded out Sunday he was taken to his father's house. Family members attempted to contact the father on Monday and were unsuccessful, after going to the house they found that the father and the truck were missing, I take this to mean that Smith was also not home.

After failing to detain Smith, officers returned to the home and found a deceased person (whose identity they have not released, but is presumably Smith's father) in a "hard to find" part of the garage...

Smith's father's name has not been released and is not available through Property Appraisal Records. The home address is 14711 Carolcrest in Houston. This info was available through the Harris County Municipal Record of Smith's arrest.

This is the home: 14711 Carolcrest Dr, Houston, TX 77079 - HAR.com

Prayers for the family. :(

The chase reached Memorial Park, where the truck crashed near the Houston Polo Club on the northwest side the park and Smith took off on foot without capture. A search is still going on.

Then, according to Deese, detectives returned to the Carolcrest home to continue the search when they located a body in a "difficult to find" part of the garage. Investigators believe this is the missing father, but an autopsy will determine the identity.

Deese added that the death didn't appear to be from natural causes.

I feel bad for the family members who bonded him out and took him to the fathers house. The guilt! IMO

I do too. I’m sure they were doing what they thought was best. But he was clearly a danger to himself and others. I wish he would have been held on a 5150 or something. Just to have an evaluation and some time to calm down. :(
