[...]

She later confirmed she has received agreement from the Belgian authorities to "deploy extra UK immigration enforcement officers to Zeebrugge".

[...]

Ms Patel said: "I have already said in my statement that we will be escalating our work.

"There is a plan in terms of working with my Belgian counterpart to address the specifics of security issues in Zeebrugge itself and how we can extend more checks if required."

OUR DESPAIR
I begged my son not to leave Vietnam… the people who did this must be punished, say parents of Essex truck victim

At least 24 families from the area believe their loved ones were on board the doomed lorry and have provided fingerprint and DNA samples in a bid to identify them.

But as they grieve, the evil people-trafficking gangs responsible for the outrage still torment them.

Mobsters move among mourners ordering them not to talk to police.

They are told they would be harmed and lose refunds of thousands of pounds paid for the ill-fated journey to the UK which ended in faraway Grays, Essex last Wednesday.

Families who had been willing to talk of their ordeal suddenly clam up as sinister figures are spotted circling their homes in cars and on motorbikes.

The Sun is prevented from meeting families by men who try to usher us away — so we leave the scene fearing for our safety.

In Can Loc, south of Yen Thanh, a mother weeps beside a candle-lit picture of missing son Nguyen Dinh Luong, 20, as more than 30 friends and relatives try in vain to comfort her.

The muggy night air is wracked with sobs as his mother tells how she decked her poignant shrine with white chrysanthemums and lilies symbolising lost youth.

Loved ones tell how Luong left the paddy fields of his home town after his family agreed to pay £14,000 in US dollars to smuggle him to Russia and a further £11,000 for his place in the tomb truck.

His brave parents are among the few who have defied the traffickers to condemn the vile trade and demand justice for their son.

According to the telegraph more arrests to follow:

More arrests are expected to be made in the coming days as officers close in on a network of criminals that operate in county Armagh in Northern Ireland and in county Monaghan, just over the border in the Republic.

Prominent members of the network have interests in transport and logistics firms and sources claim that for the past number of years, the gang has been smuggling alcohol and cigarettes into the UK and Ireland.

It is understood that more recently it has branched out into people smuggling activities through contacts it has established with other international criminal gangs.

Irish people smuggling gang at centre of Essex lorry container deaths has been under investigation 'for a year'

That'll no doubt include Ronan and Chris Hughes. Chris lives in Armagh and Ronan in Monaghan.
