It really is bizarre how he's "defending" himself.

Thanks re the selfie, I missed that part previously.

Having been the Senior Investigating Officer, in charge of many many murder , suspicious death , manslaughter , S18 Assault ( Offences against the person Act 1860) cases etc AND in conjunction with my team of Detectives and the CPS, presented many cases and offenders before the Crown Court and subsequently witnessed what takes place from the start of a trial to the end and everything in between, in conjunction with the Prosecution and Defence Barristers and QC’s , I have to say that not only is it most unusual to put the offender on the witness stand to be subject of cross examination by both the prosecution and defence, but on this occasion, I really cannot fathom the reasoning as to why ? MM’s defence case would have been far less damaging to him IMOO had he not have been put on the stand because it did nothing to help him, his cause, to sway a jury in a positive direction from what I have read here ( thank you so much @Legally Bland for the comprehensive transcripts, most kind of you) ! From my extensive experience of these sort of trials, although MM would still have not come out of this looking in any way shape or form, in a good light, had he have not gone on the stand and instead have his Barrister to communicate his account and actions taken on MM’s behalf and left out some of the finer details so that there were no definitive answers for the jury to consider, this, although not ideal for Alex’s family because they wouldn’t know the full details, has done him no favours whatsoever and is either down to incompetence on the behalf of MM’s legal team, which i highly doubt OR it speaks of the arrogance and narcissistic personality of MM and his need to try and worm his way out of a bad situation in the hope that it would make it slightly more palatable to the jury , not once considering Alex or his family in this decision!
I’m simply astounded that once MM started to give his own evidence. that his legal team didn’t pull him off the stand, knowing how he worse he was making this for himself... Wow, simply Wow. I’m not yet to the end of this thread and the verdict yet, so I could be eating crow if this performance gives him a verdict of manslaughter instead of murder in the first . I’m sure that I will soon shortly find out.....

Yes he was remanded back into custody. I thought the same as Angleterre. His 3 days in the witness box was utterly stunning. Why ? He dug a huge hole and continued digging. The mobile phone disclosure was so odd especially. I don’t think he will cope in prison I really do not.

Every time he gave an answer that seemed to incriminate him he said he was doing so because he was determined to be honest. He said this several times. I think his “strategy” in taking to the stand was to try to convince the jury that he was honest almost to a fault & therefore he must be being honest about it being manslaughter not murder. He didn’t fool them all thankfully.

i find it quite sad he still refuses to accept his sexuality. his stubborn denial and self-hatred ultimately led to this murder. if he just accepted his sexuality and his willingness to explore it he would have been much happier and no one would have batted an eyelid

I think the issue about him having sex with an underage boy was ultimately more problematic for him. I think he tried to bury that part as much as he could, but I might be wrong.

The 'cold and calculating' teenager who murdered Cheshire schoolboy Alex Rodda will be sentenced by a judge today.

Earlier this month, jurors at Chester Crown Court found Matthew Mason, 19, guilty after over nine hours of deliberations.

[...]

After an emotional day in court on January 7, Adam Rodda, Alex’s father, spoke to the press outside court.

He said: "Our son Alex was a wonderful, gentle, loving, kind, caring, respectful boy who loved life and lived life to the full. His precious life was cut short all too soon at the hands of Matthew Mason.

"Mason admitted killing Alex from the outset of this trial but still felt the need to put us through the trauma of this trial in an attempt to minimise his sentence. He never once considered the pain it would put our family through or indeed his own family.

"We have never come across a more selfish, cold and calculating person.

"Mason has attempted to blame Alex and discredit his name throughout this trial and thankfully the jury were able to see through his web of deceit.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank the jury for coming to the right decision.

'I will never get over the loss of our beautiful little boy'
I am the father of Alex and I give this statement on behalf of his mother, his brothers, sisters, grandparents, wider family and friends.

Alex was my and my ex-wife's child. He was 15 at the time of his death and he was in his final year at Holmes Chapel, where he has many friends.

Alex would often end a call and he would always say 'I love you' at the end of every phone call to his mum and to me.

He would say this irrespective if his friends were there or not. It never stopped him.

He always contributed himself to things he wanted and customers at work loved Alex, his confidence and happiness and he made an impression on people who would do anything else but love him.

I have lost count of the amount of times customers said how lovely he was.

He would always give them a hug and a kiss.

But I will never get over the loss of our beautiful little boy.

I will never get the chance to see him experience things in life that we all take for granted; having a loving relationship, getting married, having children, learning to drive and owning a car - something he was particular looking forward to.

I am personally devastated for my poor boy feeling scared and alone before his death.

I will not rest until I know what happened to my little boy.

'I feel like I failed to protect my beautiful boy and I will never get over that feeling'
Mr Rodda's statement continued:

If I know the suffering he went through I can also suffer the pain he suffered and I can share the pain, then I would feel he has not suffered alone.

I will never know what happened. I feel like I failed to protect my beautiful boy and I will never get over that feeling.

'I have struggled not to take my own life to be with Alex'
I will miss the cherished times we had. Even at 15 he was sleep in my bed with me, I would tease him and say 'aw you've slept in your dad's bed' and he would say 'shut up dad'.

I will never have that again. I have struggled not to take my own life to be with Alex. This is further devastation that I am already suffering and the pain I should never have to feel.

Whatever sentence he receives, he will still have a life; still be able to see his family during his incarceration and when he gets out he will be able to do all the things Alex would love to have been able to do.

My opinion is that Matthew Mason did not tell the truth about what happened - he weaved a web of deceit.

He is a sexual abuser and a child murderer and I never experienced someone so cold.
