this is my theory as i did visit the area....It was late at night when Tony reached the bridge of orchy.
He was having trouble with his backpack and attaching his lights to it . The Bulgarian worker of the hotel assisted him with it(the police can verify this). He left the hotel but did not take the main road to Tyndrum but instead took the military road. This would be far safer due to his lights problem. He cycled for around 30 mins(i was able to replicate this as i am quite close to his age and cycled it with him in mind). After 30 mins he approached a crossroads and got confused(so did i and it was broad daylight) instead of taking the correct route he veered left. After 8 minutes or so came the hurdle that was to prove fatal. There in front of him was a ford. It was cross it or turn back. This crossing has railway sleepers on the base of it..Tony tried to cross here and the current was far too strong for him and he was swept away to his death.....this is the only my opinion and it makes perfect sense to me.

He may have fallen into a deep body of water or simply went off the beaten track to find shelter beyond the search area. He may have got a lift from someone or is lying somewhere unfound. Perhaps the sighting at the Bridge of Orchy hotel was false and the last confirmed sighting was Glencoe village on camera.

It's an intriguing case for me as I am often in the area.
do you know the area well?

So, in theory, he could have been swept down and into the River Orchy if the Kinglas Water was high and strong enough.

I know the area very well, yep
so if you go to Auch and and take the path that goes to glen lyon-so at this point it is not the west highland way. there is a cottage there near the river. when you pass this the river bends to the right and at this point the river crosses the path....to go forward you must cross the river.. I think he attempted this. He underestimated the current. You must remember it was dark and he had came so far and turning back wasn't an option at this point.

Yep, I know that area. So it's a possibility that Tony is trapped under the River Orchy, or a deeper part of the Kinglas Water.

I would put money on it that's what happened.

I would say that your theory may very well turn out to be the correct one.

My initial thinking was that he might have gone down Glen Orchy and somehow fell into the River Orchy.

that road would had taken him miles away from away from his route home. remember it was very late at night and no cyclist would want to be on the road in the first place especially when your lights were faulty. Tony was a very clever man and wouldn't have risked that..you may wonder why he was on the road at that time of night. well i think the prices of the hotel in the bridge of orchy decided that..he would have saved at least£50 for an intended 6 mile cycle. you may ask how i know but i have visited and stayed there for this purpose and have cycled all over that area. being close to his age i can think like him.

And the fact that he knew the West Highland Way along the Military Road means it is very likely he intended to use that route towards Tyndrum.

The only thing is though, Tony would surely have enquired about prices at hotels along the route prior to setting out, and if he didn't want to be cycling in the dark then why leave it so late to set out from Fort William in late September?

you have a valid point concerning his hotel booking shambles. so obviously he never looked into it properly. he arrived at the bridge of orchy around 10:30 and for some reason he couldn't stay there so he NEVER booked anywhere. Tyndrum had to be his next port of call. The police think he took the main road and i am convinced he took the old military road. then why did the police then search an area they thought he never took?......

It's possible that Tony took the military road from Glencoe ski centre to Bridge of Orchy and then continued on that towards Tyndrum.

Do you know the exact areas that were searched?

i'm in the understanding that he took the main road to bridge of orchy .It's what he done after that's important. It's obvious that the police missed the area where Tony is. It is like looking for a needle in a haystack...you need to look in the right place..
