Not to go out on a limb but I'm thinking Jesus will be name-checked in most if not all Christian churches.

I really don't know how Jesus is relevant other than to the vicar as it comes with the job choice, but all the multitudes who turned out for church today don't go there each week for sure. Jmo (as someone who does not believe in a personal god)

Maybe a more non specific meeting of faith might have been more appropriate. Again, jmo.

I am sure this service was for April's family and I think they are people of faith. If you are not a person of faith, then you may grieve in another way that you choose.
I am heartbroken by this case. Little April's precious photos are enough to make you pause and reflect on this crazy world in which our children are growing up. They cannot play outside any more...or walk to school. They aren't even safe in our homes. It is very sad.
My frustration is directed toward MB. He has been charged and LE feel certain they have the right guy. He needs to come forth with the information that will lead LE to April. This is so important to her family and to the community at large. Its cruel enough to take a child, and murder a child...but to then conceal what you did with the child's little body is about as bad as it gets.

I'm not a religious person, but the image of April being scooped up in the arms of Jesus, and in my head this was the benevolent picture of Jesus (with warm background glow) from my old books (approx 40+ years ago).

I questioned myself as to why I don't believe, and was thinking about this as I popped outside for a smoke, when a sparrow landed at my feet - did not seem scared, and bounced around, all the time I was walking around.

Then had a murky recollection of sparrows in the bible: found this "Jesus referred to this practice when He used the sparrow to illustrate the love of God for the persecuted"

From this website http://ww2.netnitco.net/~legend01/sparrow.htm

Sorry, I sound like a religious nut trying to convert everyone - just found that scenario so poignant.

Coincidence?

The Scripture I am thinking of is this one: "It would be better for him that a millstone were hanged around his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones." Luke 17:2

Careful now... those millstones are worth quite a bit at reclamation yards, for people wanting to do arty farty stuff in their garden. Sack of bricks maybe.

interesting article , i didnt know that about sparrows, thanks for the link.
. i remember the day after my grandads death a bird sat on my window sill and pecked the window . thats never happened at my house before , the window is under the porch and my cats sit in that window an odd choice for a bird but the oddest thing was it tapped at the window every morning until the funeral but after the funeral i never saw it again . so yes either a bizzarre coincidence or something more i have no idea how one would tell the difference without faith.

Actually April's father and mother didn't go. I expect they're too upset, or the father's visual problem is stopping him and the mother didn't want to leave him on his own again.

Well said. It is so sad we can't let our children be children anymore without burdening them with the dangers they face just living their lives on a daily basis. As a parent i worry constantly. I have to know where they are, who they are with and exactly what time they will be home...They think i am overprotective, but i constantly point out it's because i love them and want them to be safe. Sad world we live in indeed.

Interesting:

"...And if a man is hitting his female partner, it is probable that he will be physically, emotionally or sexually abusing his children too."
.....
"If I can't have them, no one can", and so he kills his kids and then himself, in a fit of deadly pique and as if his children were of no greater value than a car, or a laptop. His children reduced to mere symbols of his power to do as he pleased and to hurt his partner, no matter what the consequences."

That is sadly very true, females have a far better vocabulary than men, argue and negotiate better: when the man feels defeat in the war of words, he goes back to basic grunt and strength/brute force.

An abuser is an abuser - women can be every bit as brutal and abusive as men. Even physically. Unfortunately the belief otherwise causes many men experiencing domestic abuse an unnecessary amount of embarrassment and shame in a world that should now know better. (Coming from a female survivor of domestic abuse now married to a wonderful, non-brutish wordsmith. ;))

JMO and FWIW

I was devasted this morning to hear that April's mother has asked people to stop sending her messages of condolence. She still believes her daughter is alive, or at least she is frantically trying to hold on to that hope.

How can a mother ever give up hope while her child is still missing? I think I would feel just like April's mom - until a body was found, I would refuse to accept that my child was gone forever.

One man, in one moment, made a decision to take April - and that decision will haunt her family forever. One terrible decision, and one devastated family.

I heard that the search for April will continue at least through Wednesday. How will her poor family cope if the searches stop without April being found?

I wish I could be there just to hold her mom's hand and help her try to process this terrible event.

Prayers for April and her family and community.

it is interesting because i have been unclear on a couple of things , one being the idea of still having hope . since she hasnt been found yet could still having hope refer simply to the fact they still have hope ( and rightly so ) that her body will be found . has anyone seen anything from her family saying that her family still hope of her being found alive ?

On Friday her mother continued to insist that she believed April was still alive.

In a Facebook page message posted on her behalf by her niece Mel Moon, Mrs Jones stated: ‘I am not giving up hope and have not been told my daughter is dead yet. Please stay hopeful!’

Mountain rescue teams give up their search for missing five-year-old April Jones

Mountain rescue workers have given up their hunt for missing five-year-old April Jones.
......
This afternoon, Simon Woodhead, from Mountain Rescue England and Wales, said search workers will step down this evening.

"We've now reached a point where we've exhausted the search of areas best suited to our skills given what we currently know," Mr Woodhead said.

"The tasks now being generated are suited more to specially trained police teams.

"As such Mountain Rescue operations will be suspended this evening."
