Two-week-old baby in hospital after alleged rape

‘It is understood the baby is in the paediatric unit of the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

The baby is from the Annalong area of County Down.

Earlier this week, a man appeared at Armagh Magistrates' Court charged with rape and causing grievous bodily harm to a child.

‘Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) are investigating the crime, which a spokesperson said had left the infant with "a number of serious injuries".

They have charged a 25-year-old man with with rape and grievous bodily harm with intent.’

‘A detective sergeant, also present before the court, believes he was able to connect the 25-year-old with the charges. No bail application was made by the defendant’s counsel at this stage.’

He was remanded into custody at Maghaberry prison and is due to appear before Newry Magistrates’ Court next Wednesday morning, October 10, via videolink.

A man who allegedly raped a two-week-old baby is being kept on 24-hour guard in jail to 'stop other prisoners from attacking him'.

The man, 25, is being held at HMP Maghaberry in Northern Ireland and was arrested last weekend on suspicion of raping the baby at a home.

He is being treated as a 'Special Person At Risk' which means inmates such as terrorists and murderers are being kept away from him.

The man was arrested in the seaside village of Annalong area of Co Down on September 29 after the 12-day-old infant was sexually assaulted so badly it is in intensive care.

The attack, last weekend at the Bann house area of the Northern Irish prison, is only thought to have lasted “a few seconds” but was enough to cause serious injuries to the individual.

A source said: “It was a few digs, just for a few seconds. Then there was some panic and staff moved in to sort it out.”

A man accused of raping and causing brain injuries to a baby claimed he may have unintentionally hit the child’s head off a wall while “tired and frustrated”, the High Court heard today.

But prosecutors argued the injuries inflicted, including broken ribs and thigh bones, were so severe that they could not have been accidental. A judge was also told police have discovered extreme pornographic material and indecent images of children on a phone linked to the accused.
