The body of a baby girl has been found in a West Yorkshire pub toilet, police have confirmed.

Emergency crews were called to the Three Horseshoes pub in Oulton, near Rothwell, at about 16:45 GMT on Sunday.

Police described it as a "traumatic incident" and urged the newborn's mother to seek "urgent" medical help.

Det Ch Insp James Entwistle, from West Yorkshire Police, said: "We are urgently appealing for the mother of the baby girl to contact us."

He added that the mother "could well need treatment herself".

In a post on social media, a spokesperson for the pub wrote: "All I can say at the minute is, I'm sorry to everyone that was in with us during the time this happened and to all that was due to come in and couldn't.

"A massive thank you to those that helped us while we were struggling as a team.
"It really doesn't go unappreciated."

West Yorkshire Police said a "full investigation" into the circumstances surrounding the discovery was ongoing on Monday, with assistance from the NHS.

Det Ch Insp Entwistle said: "Our main priority remains the mother's welfare and safety."

He said she could contact police on 101 or via the force's website.

"If she doesn't want to speak to the police, she can contact the Leeds Maternity Assessment Unit on 0113 3926731," he added.

Reporters have started gathering nearby in the rain.

The lights are on inside the pub, but there are no other signs of activity inside yet.

It will no doubt be a very difficult day for the staff after the tragic discovery here on Sunday afternoon.

Three Horse Shoes staff's 'struggle' after baby found in pub toilet during busy Sunday service

A community is rallying to support pub staff after a dead newborn baby was found in the venue's toilet during a busy Sunday afternoon.

The Three Horse Shoes pub issued an apology to its customers, many of whom were at the pub in Outlon, between Leeds and Wakefield, when the heartbreaking discovery was made. West Yorkshire Police have been on the scene since and are desperately searching for the mother, fearing for her welfare.

It is understood a member of staff found the baby. The owners of the pub have decided to stay closed today out of concerns for their staff. The owners have issued two statements on their Facebook page - which was quickly met with support from the local community.

'I am not here to arrest you' - police

A police officer has told the mother of a newborn baby girl found dead in a pub toilet: “I’m not here to arrest you.”

At a press conference in Leeds, Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle, from West Yorkshire Police’s homicide and major inquiry team said the baby was found in a bathroom cubicle at the Three Horseshoes in Oulton just before 5pm on Sunday afternoon.

Addressing the mother directly, he said: “From a police perspective I just want to be really clear.

“I’m not here to arrest you, I’m not here to arrest anyone else.

“I’m here to make sure I understand what’s happened and make sure that you get the medical attention that you need.”

Special plea from NHS 'head of safeguarding'

Karen Sykes, head of safeguarding at Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, told the press conference in Leeds after the discovery of the dead newborn:

To the mother of this baby girl – we are really concerned about your medical, physical and emotional wellbeing at this point in time and urgently ask you to seek some medical help and advice.

You can either go to your GP, but if you don’t feel comfortable going to your GP, come to one of our ED departments.

Ms Sykes said the mother could also call 111 or go to one of the trust’s maternity assessment centres.

The mother must be in a lot of distress to have done this.
I imagine she'd have been in the cubicle a while if the baby was born there rather than being abandoned there? And presumably was pretty quiet to have not drawn attention to what was happening. I also wonder in these cases how the mother cuts the umbilical cord.

So sad

'Stillbirth may have taken place in bathroom cubicle' say police

Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle said the evidence so far suggested the baby’s death was “a stillbirth, and a stillbirth that may have taken place within that bathroom cubicle”.

The West Yorkshire Police officer made a plea to the mother:

Please, get in touch with us, get in touch with our NHS colleagues and please make sure that we can get you the care you need.

All I want to achieve is making sure that this doesn’t happen again to you or to anyone else.

She has now received the appropriate medical care and is being given ongoing support. Thank you to everyone who supported us with our enquiries.'

I reckon the mum gave birth in the pub, realised the baby was stillborn, panicked and then threw the baby in the toilet. It's a sad story but I'm not sure why this is newsworthy.
