We have concerns for the welfare of Gareth Jones who is missing with his dog.


Have you seen Gareth Jones? He's been reported missing from Hove and concerns are growing for his welfare.

He was last seen around 1pm on Saturday (January 16) at Fish, Basin Road South, and is believed to be with his brown cockapoo dog.

When last seen, Gareth was wearing a light blue puffer coat, grey tracksuit bottoms with white stripes down the legs and a navy beanie hat.

First day of rescue has not found Gareth or the dog despite multiple agencies deployed in the search.

Ongoing SAR incident off Hove / Shoreham for Missing man Gareth Jones. (see previous post for photos of gareth)

Gareth, 69, was last seen around 1pm on Saturday (January 16) at Fish, Basin Road South, and is believed to be with his brown cockapoo dog.

Local Coastguard teams, Both Shoreham lifeboat and Brighton Lifeboat assisting Police.

NPAS the police helicopter was assisting but has now left the area.

Gareth is white, approximately 5’ 10”, of medium build and bald. He is wearing a light blue puffer coat, grey tracksuit bottoms with white stripes down the legs and a navy beanie hat. His dog is likely to be wearing a red harness.

Anyone who sees Gareth or who has any information as to his whereabouts is asked to call 999 quoting serial 928 of 16/01.

Sussex Police update:

We're sad to update that the search for missing Hove man Gareth Jones has been scaled down this afternoon (Sunday, January 17).

It comes after officers investigating the matter viewed CCTV from the area where he was last seen, and believe it shows Gareth and his dog sadly getting swept out to sea.

Search scaled down after CCTV appears to show missing man and dog being swept out to sea

Yes, thats whats happened reading from the family, there is footage of Gareth throwing the ball and the dog goes out to sea. Gareth is seen going in the water looking for the dog. He enters where there was a shelf, 6 feet drop and he would not of seen that. He tried 3 times and then didnt surface. Search operations have stood down. A search for Gareth will commence.

Neither Gareth or his dog have been located so hopefully Gareth can be laid to rest.

Sussex Police have recovered a body from near the water’s edge at Tide Mills.

A member of the public alerted police at 8.56am on Tuesday (January 19) to the body of a man on the beach near Seaford.

Sadly, police believe the body to be that of missing 69-year-old Gareth Jones from Hove. His family have been made aware.

There are no suspicious circumstances and the coroner’s office has been informed.

Gareth’s dog was also sadly found deceased on the beach in Brighton on Monday (January 18).
