The civilian who called him "Asian" was trying very hard to be grounded and intelligible for the tv guy, but she (as a visual witness) was clearly shook up. Plus, read what Skibs has to say about the British definition of "Asian".

I'll just add that some people from the Indian sub-continent, which is whet we Brits generally mean by Asians, can be quite dark skinned, and I certainly wouldn't rule out the perpetrator.

I just viewed additional photos of the suspect on the stretcher(view from top of the head) and I can see a more of a resemblance now.

MSM has not identified the attacker as Abu Izzadeen. Channel 4 did but have since retracted. According to his solicitor and brother he is still in prison.

My best guess is that people saw photos of the attacker online and there was sufficient similarity to a known extremist for the rumours to start spreading.

RSBM

I agree, someone jumped the gun and made one huge assumption.

The Telegraph did too. Per WS TOS both The Telegraph and Channel 4 are classed as MSM (mainstream media)

:welcome: to WS :)

IIRC, this is very common in the UK. I don't get it.
We do have armed Police and generally those who patrol or guard our major airports, tourist attractions (Parliament, Buckingham Palace etc) and largest cities are armed. General Police are not armed or armed with tasers but we have units of specialist armed response teams all over the country. It works very well broadly.
Wanted to add, I am not sure the murdered police officer was unarmed and would be surprised if they weren't but maybe they just couldn't react in time.

Met Police have confirmed to BBC that the Officer who was stabbed to death was not armed. LEO are not routinely armed in the UK. There were a number of armed officers onsite who responded and shot the perp dead. I've visited the houses of Parliament myself on a couple of occasions and there is definitely a significant armed officer presence but not every officer has a gun.

Wow. With the recent climate I would think they would be armed with something. IMO.

Not even a taser?

It is indeed true. Statistically, I believe around 2,000 Met Police (London) officers are routinely armed with firearms (around 5-6%), and around 5% with tasers, although this may have increased. It is worth mentioning that around Westminster/Parliament, it is far more likely (in my experience) to see armed officers.

I don't have any new information to add. I am posting purely because this is a place very close to my heart - up until November I worked in a government department in Westminster, so this is very close to home. I adore Westminster, I would very often go up to London early purely to walk around, enjoy the sights and take photos, and working right beside Scotland Yard, I loved being by the police and seeing them patrol.

All I can say is that thoughts are with the family, friends and colleague of the unarmed officer who died doing his job, with the other innocent victims of a pointless attack, and with every single officer in this country who ultimately put their lives at risk for people on a daily basis.

I can't believe what happened today, well I can but I can't, if that makes sense. This has been a long time coming but now it has arrived again nearly 4 years after the last attack, it seems surreal. Right in the heart of the capital.

Until very recently I worked close by, extremely close and regularly spent my lunch break walking up and down that bridge. I feel sick knowing how innocent people going about their day where mown down and a policeman bravely doing his duty was stabbed to death.

I'm sorry I can't bring any insight or thoughts to the thread right now, I just needed a place to express my absolute despair and disbelief. This forum has so many kind people, I know you will understand. To the innocent victims and injured, the families and their friends, my heart and prayers go out to you.

This might help you understand better, gun deaths (highlighted in dark green) are pretty rare here compared to the US.That said, I agree that police officers stationed around our national "targets" should carry guns.

I definitely don't want to derail the thread. I just didn't realize that not all LE were armed.

And I'm so sorry to our across the pond friends for this tragedy and the aftermath. Prayers to all y'all.

Yes, but we would describe a large number of those as Oriental or Middle-Eastern, not just Asian.

Yes, so do we in the USA. And when I first read that the perp was Asian, I immediately thought Oriental. And it didn't make any sense to me. I've seriously forgotten my geography.
I was not trying to be snarky with my previous post, just trying to be helpful for those like me. Should I delete it?

Right. I don't know if this helps or not, but I do have a lot of online friends from the US and this topic has come up before. The conclusion was what we in the UK refer to as Asian, my friends in the US refer to Persian. I'm not sure how accurate that is but it was the general consensus between my US (Non WS) friends.

Police have confirmed that they believe that they know who the perpetrator is. Understandably they are not releasing the details at this stage.

1 Police officer & 3 members of the public deceased.

40 injured. A number seem to be international tourists.

No definitely not!! I often find these differences and national idiosyncrasies crop up on Websleuths. I find it fascinating and learn a lot!
