Next witness: Detective constable Susanne Seagrave

The next witness will be Detective constable Susanne Seagrave, of the Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire Major Crime Unit.

Dc Seagrave said she was one of the officers present when Stewart was arrested at the home he shared with Ms Bailey on July 11, 2016. She cautioned Stewart after he was arrested, and accompanied Stewart to the police station in a police car.

Stewart asked more than once about garage door being open, officer tells jury. Helen Bailey's body discovered in cesspit under garage floor.

It appeared to me that Stewart was concerned about the garage door being slightly open'

Dc Seagrave tells jurors: “During the car journey, Stewart asked us if we’d found her, if we’d found Helen.”

She also said she seized an iPhone from Stewart.

On the day Stewart was arrested, Dc Seagrave said: “It appeared to me that Stewart was concerned about the garage door being slightly open.

“It was open, yes. He made no other comments about any other insecure parts of the house.

I wouldn't read too much into it; Helen speaks warmly of IS' sons in her blog and not so warmly of JS' son (Jennie's brother) who didn't want to meet IS.

(This wrt to Helen possibly not having a good relationship with IS' sons as opposed to JS' children)

Mikes back from his long lunch ;)

Yes I think it speaks volumes about Helen that she remained on such good terms with her stepdaughter after the death of JS. One did not get the impression IS' sons were especially fond of her when they gave evidence (one of them apparently did not really notice that she and Boris were absent when he returned home on the night of her murder after bowling, and sat and ate a takeaway with his father without enquiring as to her whereabouts!). Perhaps I am being unfair, but I was left with the feeling she was the provider of a comfortable house and home cooked meals but was somewhat taken for granted by IS' sons, as they came and went to cadets, bowling, had girlfriends to stay etc.

LOL I think that's how the mothers of most teenagers/early 20s sons feel. Probably harder for a step parent to adapt to that overnight.

Dc Seagrave is cross-examined

Dc Seagrave is now being cross examined by the defence. She confirms that just before 7am on July 11, she saw that the door to the left hand side of the garage was open. She admits she did not look into the garage itself on this day.

Dc Seagrave said she was aware that Stewart was made a suspect in the investigation, but said she could not recall the exact date she was told this.

Under re-examination by the prosecution, DC Seagrave said while she was at the house, Stewart never suggested to her that there were valuable items in the garage he was concerned about.

my comment
is there a huge relevance as to whether or not DC Seagrave can remember the exact date that she was told IS was a suspect ?
Or is this on a par with the Defence the other day correcting a witness re the fact that she said something like Monday April 12 when she should have said Monday April 11

Yes I don't think you can read much into it. They were young lads and likely to use home as a base for their social lives beyond it. They probably saw Helen as their Dad's new partner and were fond of her but we're moving on with their lives.

BIB she does indeed, which is why it would be good to hear all of the evidence and to know if they ever spoke warmly of her.

Tx for fining link
"A couple of days before we were due to meet up, Only Son emailed me to ask that GGHW didn’t attend the gathering. He said he wanted me to be happy, but he didn’t want to meet my new man and that he would feel uncomfortable if his father looked down and saw us all laughing together. "

I think what Milly was referencing before she edited her post was IS's refs last week re one of his sons and wtte "I don't think HB and son had had argument" or wtte "argument twixt them had been resolved. "

It was pretty unclear AFAIK and I'd have to go back and find that snippet from the police interviews.

You don't think at all resentful, HB having 'replaced' their mother little more than a year after she had died?

True.
And equally we all know people involved in "re-made" families where a step parent finds it hard to "get "someone else's older kids and I can think of examples amongst my women friends who have said as much, esp. when the new partner is very different to the spouse in upbringing, interests etc.
( So neither HB nor Jenny/JS's other son might share a love of, say, crown green bowling and other hobbies. She may have had more in common with JS's kids, I don't know. )

Tara has just updated a bit of the feed

And he clearly doesn't mean 'Have you found her alive'.

Possibly, we don't really know but they had been together a while.
I think many late teens/early 20s men (and many girls too) tend to treat home as a lodging base. Therefore the comings and goings of other occupants might not be commented on.

Whether they were close to Helen is hard to say and they would have been closest to each other as a unit of three left together after their Mum died. I think enough time had elapsed though for them to accept Helen.

It was also an awfully big house for four people and I would imagine anyone needing time for themselves could get that without comment. In my small two bed terraced house it would stick out like a sore thumb if someone normally around wasn't present.

@Alyce she's been doing that several times today. I don't think she has fully recovered from that early feed fail!

Statement by Sgt David Perkins

A statement is now being read by Sergeant David Perkins, who searched the home address of Helen Bailey on April 19. He said the search was a consensual search in relation to a missing person investigation.

Sergeant Perkins said it was made clear that no persons under the address were under suspicion at this time.

In a statement, he said: “We attended the address, we were tasked with the rear garden and the garage.

“While searching the rear garden my colleague located a manhole cover to the rear of the garage.

“I noticed that grass was trapped under the lid, having opened it I could see fresh grass had been trapped under the lid, suggesting that it had been recently lifted.

“As we were unable to search the cesspit ourselves, our specialist search officer was informed about that as a task.

“He said he was tasked to search the garage area, and the vehicles in the garage.”

so no problem lifting up that manhole cover

HB also spoke of longing for a daughter, so she may have found some of that relationship with Jennie compared with the "boys" around her - things like texting to say you're home safe from holiday strike me much more as daughter behaviour.

Statement by Pc Charlotte Hills

Another statement is now being read to jurors by police officer Charlotte Hills.

She said: “I was told the premises had already been searched and that Stewart had been arrested for murder.

“I was told a timeline of the search would be I and another Pc assisting the cadaver dogs, searching the whole house and grounds.

“On July 11 and 12, the search was led by Sergeant Oliphant.

“Myself and another colleague were supporting cadaver dogs, I recall that all the vehicles were being searched first, then removed from the premises afterwards.

“The first task was the search of a black BMW, parked on the driveway.

“The second task was the vehicle parked in the far right of the garage – a white Jeep belonging to Helen Bailey.

“Due to the restricted space it was decided to move the vehicle out of the garage. It initially did not start but it was eventually started and searched.

“The first task was a white fiat 500 also belonging to Helen Bailey, which was reversed out from the garage.

“We also searched a black Seat belonging to Stewart.”
