The first picture of an elderly couple who were found dead in their home just before Christmas has been released by their 'devastated' family.

John and Beverley Taylor, both 66, were discovered at the property in Regent Crescent, Skipton, after police were called to the North Yorkshire address at about 7.30am on December 21.

David Michael Taylor, 35, was arrested soon after the bodies were discovered and appeared before Leeds Crown Court on December 23.

David, who is believed to be the couple's son, has been charged with their murder.

John and Beverley's family released a statement through North Yorkshire Police, publishing a picture of the couple and revealing the 'devastating' impact the deaths have had.

It reads: 'The family of John and Beverley Taylor (née Bernard), both aged 66, would ask through this devastating time they be allowed their privacy.

'They would like to thank all the friends and the community of Skipton for all their support and messages of comfort. Thank you.'

The trial of a man accused of double murder in Skipton four days before Christmas is set to begin at Bradford Crown Court on June 15.

The two-week hearing was fixed today when David Taylor, 35, appeared before the court on a video link to Hull Prison where he is held in custody.

Taylor is charged with murdering John and Beverley Taylor, both 66, of Regent Crescent, Skipton, on December 21.

The couple were found at their home following a call to the police.

This week, an inquest opening was told that the provisional cause of death was stab wounds.

David Taylor, understood to be the couple's son, was charged with murder and today made his first appearance before Bradford Crown Court following previous listings at York and Leeds.

Taylor was not arraigned on the charges but Jonathan Sandiford QC, for the Crown, asked the Recorder of Bradford, Judge Richard Mansell QC, to set a timetable to progress the case.

Bearded Taylor, in a grey sweatshirt, spoke only to confirm his name at the short hearing.

The court heard from Sean Smith, defence barrister, that investigations are ongoing into the state of Taylor’s mental health.

Judge Mansell listed the case again on April 25 for an update on the findings.

He remanded Taylor back into custody until then.

Skipton double murder suspect David Taylor 'may be found unfit to plea and stand trial' says judge

A man accused of murdering his parents in North Yorkshire days before Christmas may stand trial in June.

David Taylor, 35, appeared at Bradford Crown Court today via video link, charged with the murders of John and Beverley Taylor, both 66.

He is alleged to have killed the couple at their home on Regent Crescent in Skipton on December 21.

A provisional trial date of June 15 has been set, but Taylor has not entered a plea and he will undergo psychiatric assessments, to determine whether he is fit to stand trial.

Judge Richard Mansell said Taylor will continue to be remanded in custody at HMP Hull until he next appears in court for a case management hearing on April 25.

At that hearing, the judge will be provided with an update on the psychiatric assessments.

Taylor, wearing a grey jumper, spoke only to confirm his name at today’s hearing.

Judge Mansell said: "I will not ask you to enter any plea today because investigations are ongoing into your mental state and whether you may be unfit to plea and stand trial.

“That will take some time, with the involvement of psychiatrists."

Such a sad outcome :(

A man has today been sentenced for the manslaughter of his parents in Skipton.

At Bradford Crown Court on Friday 20 January 2023, David Taylor, 37, received a hybrid order - which involves hospital treatment until he is deemed fit for release to prison, followed by a minimum term of eight years in prison.

On 21 December 2021, North Yorkshire Police officers attended an address on Regent Crescent in Skipton, and Taylor was arrested at the scene. In June 2022, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility.

Speaking after the sentencing hearing, Senior Investigating Officer DI Steve Menzies, of North Yorkshire Police’s Major Crime Team, said: “This has been a very sad investigation, and unlike with many court cases, there are no winners following today’s result.

“At the time of their deaths, John and Beverley Taylor were both 66 years old, and they clearly loved and cared for their son David. He was living with them in their home on Regent Crescent in Skipton when the incident occurred just before Christmas last year. Early in the morning of 21 December 2021, both Beverley and John suffered multiple stab wounds and died at their home. David called the emergency services and he was arrested at the scene.

“David is known to have suffered from significant and fluctuating mental health issues, which his family believe started following him taking illicit drugs at a rave party a number of years ago.

“Clearly this has been a very distressing time for the family and friends of John, Beverley and David, and they have been left devastated. Beverley was the focal point of the family, and plans were in place for them all to spend Christmas together. I praise the whole family for the way that they have supported each other, and how they have supported my team during the course of the investigation.

“There will now follow an independent Mental Health Homicide Review, led by NHS England, so it would not be appropriate to make any further comment relating to the circumstances of the investigation.”

In a statement, the family of John and Beverley Taylor (née Bernard) said: “We are a large, close family and the events of 21 December 2021 have left us all in shock and grief that is unimaginable.

“The void in all our lives is huge and we are all trying in our own way to deal with this tragedy.

“We would like to thank all our extended family and friends and the community of Skipton for all their kindness and support. We very much appreciate you all.”
