If the victim of the assault is in witness protection he’s presumably not being protected from John. So who is he being protected from?

Yes, exactly! Putting someone in the witness protection programme costs thousands - and not to mention it uproots lives.

We does he (the person who was assaulted) need to be put into WP in the first place?!
This is usually reserved for top-end cases of really heavy duty stuff.

Something strange is going on here.
But what?

I don’t know 100% it’s WP. I do think the person is protected. You look at the circumstances of what the family have said about the incident. Family possibility being in a safe house at the time of the incident and saying (which they later back tracked on) that John may of thought there were threats against his family. Family have always said it’s very complicated what’s happened to a John and not for public domain. What’s happened to John’s company LUPINE S.I.S. Looks like this is now defunct.

Apparently the assault was very out of character for John. He had no previous dealings with the police. His family and friends stress what a lovely man he was. He was far from being a hardened criminal. There must have been something else in the background to hav caused the assault. if something out of the ordinary caused the assault incident to occur that was probably also a major factor in whatever stress is stated that John was under leading up to his disappearance.

if he committed suicide though, why go to trouble of going on a train to Dovercourt. It seems like he was travelling with some sort of purpose. To meet someone or find a boat?

it seems like there is something else going on here and it feels very sad

Where did this witness protection thing come from?

Also as for traveling to Dovercourt to committee suicide. Don't forget that John was in the Navy and Dovercourt was the easiest bit of coast to get to from where he lived. He may have decided that the sea was his chosen way to go due to his background in the Navy.

RIP John
