0_6-20211201-leah-ware-high-risk-misper-hastings-pt.jpg

Leah Ware's mum, Rebecca, is the first to be called to give evidence.
She is visibly emotional on the stand, holding back tears as she speaks about her daughter. She says of Leah: "She was an angel really."
Rebecca is providing details about Leah's upbringing and relationships with her family members.

12:10

Leah had a 'complicated' life

Leah's mum describes how her daughter moved in with a man, a friend from school, when she was 17. The couple had their first child when Leah was 19 and their second a couple of years later.
They stayed together for roughly eight years, and Leah's mum agrees that her daughter's life became more complicated after that split.
Leah had some health issues which needed her to take regular medication - she picked this up from a doctors in Hastings. She also used cannabis and went through some troublesome relationships.
Leah had three children in total, including one from a future relationship. Leah's mum has had no contact with Leah since March 2021.

12:17

Defence barrister now asking questions

Brown's barrister, Ian Henderson KC, is now asking questions of Leah's mum.

12:20

Mum 'doesn't know' when she last saw Leah before March 2021

Mr Henderson KC asks Leah's mum, Rebecca, to give the jury "some flavour of the level of contact" she'd had with Leah before the pair lost contact in March 2021.
Rebecca says: "I had not been allowed to see her but not through choice."
She adds that they had not spoken directly but had exchanged emails in the six months prior to March 2021.
Mr Henderson KC asks Rebecca when she had last seen Leah before March 2021 - Rebecca replies: "I really don't know."

12:27

Leah became 'jealous' after birth of mum's third child

Leah is said to have become "jealous" after the birth of her mum's third child. The court hears that she became "manipulative", but her mum says this was no more than any other child, adding - "They all do it".
Again, Leah's mum is asked about her daughter's drug use.
Mr Henderson KC is also asking Leah's mum to talk about some of her daughter's past relationships, including one "difficult and violent" one.
It is also confirmed by her mum that Leah spent some time in hospital with mental health concerns.
After a few more questions, Leah's mum finishes her evidence.

12:45

Last had contact with Leah in February 2021

Leah's cousin last had contact with her in February 2021, she says after then she'd send messages without getting a reply from Leah.
Mr Henderson KC asks Leah's cousin when the last time she saw Leah was - the cousin replies that she "can't remember" but then adds that the last time was just after her grandad had died, in 2019.
She says: "The day after he had died I went to see her."

12:59

Next witness - man who rented Hastings property to Brown and Leah

The next witness is a man who rented a property to Mark Brown and Leah Ware, who moved in before Christmas of 2018.
He says about their tenancy in 2019:
They were noisier than other tenants had been and they clearly smoked inside the property. To start with we assumed it was just smoking but then there was a definite smell of cannabis sometimes.
By February or March of 2019, he says Mark Brown had moved out but Leah still lived there. Brown would also come to visit.
Regarding other people visiting the flat, the landlord says:
Yes there was clearly another male who came to the house. He turned up on a motorbike. Fairly regular, and I would say he stayed overnight on several occasions.
The landlord says that Leah would "rarely" go out while she lived in the property.
Mr Henderson KC puts it to the landlord that he couldn't have been certain who was coming and going from the flat. The landlord says the man "definitely lived there to start with".

14:25

Mark Brown had leased land at Little Bridge Farm for years

The court is hearing from Emma Bartlett, who, along with her husband, is in charge of Bartlett's scrapyard at Little Bridge Farm. That scrapyard is next to the land used by Mark Brown.
Jurors hear that Emma's brother in law owns Little Bridge Farm and land has been leased to Brown for the past four or five years. Emma is talking through the geography of the site.
The jury is also being shown aerial views of Little Bridge Farm and the buildings that are on site.

14:32

'Leah Ware was introduced as Mark Brown's sister'

Regarding Leah Ware being at Little Bridge Farm, Emma Bartlett says "she was introduced as his [Mark Brown's] sister".

14:58

Emma Bartlett would see Leah at farm 'every month of 6 to 8 weeks'

Emma Bartlett tells Brown's barrister, Ian Henderson KC, that she would see Leah at the farm every month or 6 to 8 weeks. They wouldn't talk often but when they did, Leah was "very pleasant and would ask about my father in law".

15:27

Next to give evidence is Raphael De Bruyne - he gave Duke the dog to Mark Brown. He speaks about his encounter when handing the dog over to Brown at the farm caravan.

15:38

Leah was Brown's 'bit on the side'

The next witness, Chris Adams, knew Mark Brown through work - Chris was a HGV driver and Brown was an escort vehicle driver. They met around mid-2019.
Chris tells the jury that he never learned much about Brown's personal life, other than that Brown had a partner called Lisa and a girlfriend, a separate lady. He described Leah as a "girlfriend, a bit on the side".

16:07 KEY EVENT

Chris Adams was the final witness to give evidence today, and he has just finished up in court.
That will bring to an end day two of the trial - the court will rise now and sit again tomorrow morning, with prosecution witnesses continuing to give evidence.

How clever was Alex leaving those clues! But also how desperate she must have been to go and meet him anticipating thst could have been her fate
I know someone who has done this sort of work in the past. Showing these to her she says that those breadcrumbs left that day don’t appear “normal”, that perhaps there was an added more specific reason AM felt to be in danger.

Leah Ware was stopped by police for driving the defendant, Mark Brown's, car without insurance on December 11 2020, she says she was on the way to book a termination. That took place on December 14.

The previous month, on November 24, Leah Ware was in hospital for a drug overdose after being slumped over the wheel of her car - it was here that she was confirmed to be pregnant but had not disclosed this information to her partner.

That will be the end of Anna Williamson's evidence.

12:04

Next witness is a former boss of Mark Brown

Byron Whiteside is the next person to give evidence - he is company manager for South East Static Trader Ltd (SEST), for whom Mark Brown used to work.

Brown began working for SEST in December 2019 as an escort driver - he would drive in front of an abnormal load to ensure its safe passage.

After around four months at SEST, Mr Whiteside says that Brown started taking Leah Ware with him. Mr Whiteside knew Leah as "Princess" and says: "It was taken under the assumption that she was Mark's partner."

Mr Whiteside says that the reasons for Brown taking Leah to work was that she was "very lonely and didn’t want to be at the farm on her own".

Mr Whiteside says: "Princess was beautiful, she was a lovely lady. Whilst she was there she always grafted and mucked-in". He adds it was a "pleasure" to have her helping out with Brown.

Ms Bond says that Leah "seemed to brush off the conversation about her children" and "she spoke about the future and waiting to get them [her children] back".
And Ms Bond also observes that Leah "definitely seemed happier talking about her animals than her children. That was the conversation she wanted to stay on".
And adds: "She [Leah] genuinely wanted to have her kids in her life and was willing to change to achieve that."

Leah 'wanted to get her children back'

Charlotte Eastes, a mental health nurse in Hastings, is now giving evidence. She conducted an assessment of Leah Ware on November 27, 2020 after her suspected overdose.
This was two days after Leah had been found slumped at the wheel of her car by police. Leah had denied taking an overdose of drugs.
Leah was pregnant at the time but this was not disclosed to the partner. And the witness tells the court that Leah was not having suicidal thoughts.
Leah called her mother "mentally abusive", according to a report written by Charlotte Eastes.
Ms Eastes says of Leah:
In the past she had admitted to using alcohol and drugs but not at the time of her assessment. She wanted to set a good example and get her children back.

14:27

Leah had 'another destructive personality'

The court hears about an excerpt from Ms Eastes assessment report, in which she says that Leah had another personality and her partner noticed this. They called this personality Amelia - Amelia was "destructive".
The report on Leah said: "Leah feels that she hears voices and felt that the voices were with her all the time. She said that the voices were both internal and external."
Medication Leah was on included: an antidepressant, antipsychotic medication, another antidepressant, two types of painkiller, sleeping tablet.
Mr Henderson KC, Brown's barrister, makes note to part of Ms Eastes' report that says Brown "cooked and provided" for Leah.

Friend of Mark Brown now giving evidence

Wayne Jury is now giving evidence - he's known Mark Brown for 20 to 25 years.
He says of Brown: "Yeah he's a friend but I didn’t really do anything personal like hobbies with him."
Mr Jury also stored his van at Brown's farm for a cost of £80 per month.

15:49

Mr Jury hasn't seen Brown since May 2021

Mr Jury says he used to contact Brown if he wanted to access the site at Little Bridge Farm. He says a woman was there, who Brown called "Princess".
The witness says the caravan had "gone" in January 2021.
On May 23, 2021, Mr Jury again went to the workshop site operated by Brown. He's asked by prosecutor Ben Lloyd about how the workshop was then.
Mr Jury says: "I think it was tidier, I don't remember a huge amount about it. He had sold a few of the vehicles that were in there."
He also notes that the horse wasn't in the drive when he arrived and the "little yappy dog wasn't there" either. Mr Jury hasn't seen Brown since that day.

Mr Jury is then released as a witness after some cross-examination from Mr Henderson KC.
