Officers are being as "transparent as they can be" in what is an "incredibly sensitive and complex case" as the search for Nicola Bulley approaches its fourth week, Lancashire's police and crime commissioner has said.

Andrew Snowden made the remarks after police revealed Ms Bulley had suffered "significant issues with alcohol" which were "brought on by her ongoing struggles with the menopause".

Mr Snowden said: "The unprecedented media and public interest in this case, whilst welcomed for appeals for information, is challenging for the family and friends of Nicola and officers and police staff dealing with unsubstantiated rumours and speculation on a daily basis.

"I'd like to thank all members of the public who have provided helpful information to Lancashire Police."

Mr Snowden's comments also come as Wyre Council leader Michael Vincent told Sky News there are "lessons to be learned" for police searching for Ms Bulley.

He added: "But I think they've done their best in difficult circumstances."

Talking about the personal information about Ms Bulley revealed by police, Mr Vincent said: "That was put out there with the knowledge of Nicola's family because other people were seeking to make that information public.

"That wasn't the police's decision, their hand was forced, should they have done it? Again, with the benefit of hindsight, that should be looked into in future cases."

Today marks three weeks since missing dog walker Nicola Bulley was last seen - as police have been heavily criticised for their handling of the investigation.

Residents in the village of St Michael's on Wyre where Nicola disappeared have hired a private security firm to stop vigilantes looking in through their windows.

Meanwhile Lancashire Police has referred itself to an independent watchdog over contact it had with her just days before she went missing.

This week, detectives took the unprecedented step to disclose personal details about the 45-year-old amid the fruitless search. A statement said Nicola previously suffered from "significant issues with alcohol" brought on by ongoing struggles with menopause.

The missing mum's family released their own statement confirming they were aware police would be releasing the details though said: "Nikki would not have wanted this."

The force has received backlash, including from Labour MP Stella Creasy who said there is "no evidence that this is assisting in finding her". And Home Secretary Suella Braverman has also demanded answers from the constabulary.

E Bulley, 73, says "every day is a struggle" as the family are desperate for answers.

It comes one day after, Nicola's family released a heartbreaking directly appealed to the mum, saying to "not be scared" as her girls "want a cuddle".

It comes after Nicola's sister shared a sunny snap of herself with Nicola and their mum D, 72 on her Facebook wall today.

She wrote: "Three weeks today without you home. We all miss you so much, time to come home now."

In a scathing attack, Mark Williams-Thomas said Lancashire Police's media strategy is 'totally wrong' in the probe into the mortgage adviser's disappearance while out walking her dog three weeks ago.

Speaking on the riverbank in St Michaels on Wyre, close to where Ms Bulley, 45, was last seen on January 27, Mr Williams-Thomas told MailOnline: 'They [Lancashire Police] got their media strategy totally wrong.

'How did they think that they could release a piece of information like that and journalists and investigators weren't going to say, what are you talking about?'

Mr Williams-Thomas, a former Surrey Police detective, said Lancashire Police only revealed details of Nicola's vulnerability after he told them he had information about police having being called to her home just weeks before she went missing.

A friend who lives in the village - who did not wish to be named - told the Mirror: "She booked a playdate, 8.57, she sent a text message to a friend whose mortgage she had just recently signed off on to arrange for the girls to go for tea this week."

The friend said this indicates she had no intention of voluntarily disappearing.

"You wouldn’t have done that if you were going to get up and go missing," she added.

She said the information was revealed during a meeting at the village hall on Sunday morning at around 10.30am before residents headed out on their first mass organised search.

Missing persons expert Charlie Hedges today suggested Ms Bulley could have 'gone off-grid', saying 'nobody goes missing without a reason.'

This week police publicly divulged information about Nicola Bulley's battles with alcohol and the menopause - a decision critics blasted as 'sexist'.

Mr Hedges told GB News on Saturday there is 'no indication' Ms Bulley is in the river.

He continued: 'Nobody goes missing without a reason, and understanding what's going on in someone's life is very, very important.

'All lines of action need to be followed. It may be that she just took the decision to go off.

'But it's not that easy to go off the grid in today's world.'

Former Inspector of the Constabulary Zoe Billingham earlier said Lancashire Police's actions have created 'an element of doubt' for families over turning to the police if a loved one goes missing.

TikTok sleuths have sparked fury after filming themselves digging up woodland close to where Nicola Bulley vanished despite police repeatedly warning them to stop.

Two amateur detectives recorded themselves searching a copse near to the River Wyre in St Michael's on Wyre, Lancashire, where the mother of two disappeared three weeks ago.

One is seen digging up soil while the other man films him and comments on Ms Bulley's disappearance.

The video was uploaded onto social networking site TikTok this morning by C, who also posted a video showing him roaming around a large, supposedly vacant house, on the opposite side of the river from the bench where Ms Bulley was last seen.

Lancashire Police have warned on more than one occasion that while grateful for offers of help, they would prefer the investigation be left to trained detectives.

A former police chief has said the criticism of police’s search for Nicola Bulley is unfair.

MPs have hit out at Lancashire constabulary after it made public the missing mother had been struggling with the menopause and alcohol before her disappearance on 27 January.

In the past week the prime minister and home secretary have intervened over the decision, and investigations have been announced by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and the information commissioner, and an internal review by the force itself.

But Peter Fahy, a former chief constable of Greater Manchester police, said the criticism had been overblown and that the flurry of public interest meant officers were like “very highly skilled surgeons” asked to “operate with a huge public gallery”.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Lancashire police have been very diligent in tracing lots of witnesses, eyewitnesses, mobile phone data, huge use of CCTV. That itself has closed off many potential theories about what has happened to this poor woman.

A number of photographs were yesterday posted on the engineer’s Pinterest account, including models in lingerie – some topless – and images of an actress in a bikini.

The update sparked concern from users of the site and some speculated it had been hacked. After being alerted to the posts by the Sunday Express, Lancashire Police confirmed his account was hacked and an investigation was underway.

A force spokeswoman said: “Paul Ansell’s Pinterest account has been accessed by a third party and is being closed down. We are investigating the matter.”

A close friend of Nicola Bulley has spoken of her fury at what she calls the missing mother’s false portrayal as an ‘unfit’ parent.

Nadia Fell said the police decision to reveal Ms Bulley’s health struggles had triggered cruel suggestions that her daughters, who are aged six and nine, ‘aren’t safe around her’.

In a spirited defence of the 45-year-old mortgage adviser, who vanished while walking her dog in St Michael’s on Wyre, Lancashire, last month, Ms Fell said: ‘The rumours are starting that Nikki is an unfit mum… I will not hear it. Nikki is the most amazing mum ever. Those girls are her world.’

Ms Bulley’s youngest child is best friends with one of 39-year-old Ms Fell’s three daughters. ‘Many’s the time my daughter has spent time with Nikki without me and I’ve trusted her without question, why wouldn’t I?’ she said.

Last week, Lancashire Police said it would review its decision to reveal that Ms Bulley had experienced problems with alcohol and the menopause.
