Nino’s and Francesca’s bodies will be flown to Catania from Manchester on 14th February. They will have separate funerals, each in their home town.

The article says that Andrea’s defence lawyer asked for a second autopsy to be carried out and he’ll probably plead manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility. No surprise there, but I’m quite sceptical tbh.

Man admits killing 'beautiful' Italian couple found dead in flat

The bodies of Antonino Calabro, known as Nino, and his girlfriend, Francesca Di Dio, were discovered by police in an apartment in Thornaby, North Yorkshire, on December 21, last year.

Dressed in a grey t-shirt, he replied: 'Not guilty to murder, but guilty to manslaughter, by reason of diminished responsibility.'

Prosecutor Nick Dry said that the crown accepted Cardinale's pleas.

Cardinale, of Thornaby Road, listened from prison as Judge Paul Watson KC said that he 'wholly agreed' with the crown's decision to accept the plea, 'on the relatively clear psychiatric evidence'.

A provisional date of August 15 was set for Cardinale to be sentenced for the double manslaughter.

Judge Watson said that the date may have to be changed, depending on the doctor's availability to provide further reports.

Taylor will be detained in Rampton Hospital but the order under Section 45A of the Mental Health Act means that if and when he has completed his period of treatment he will be automatically sent to prison instead of being discharged into the community.

Judge Rose set the minimum custodial term at eight years but, as a dangerous offender, Taylor would be released only if and when and if The Parole Board deemed it safe to do so.

Cardinale’s situation might be quite different though. Can anyone think of similar UK cases in recent years?

The court heard Cardinale and "close friend" Mr Calabro, 26, were friends from croupier school and travelled to the UK in 2019 to work at the Grosvenor Casino in Stockton-on-Tees.

Cardinale was dismissed from that role in September 2022 due to poor work ethic and “odd behaviour”, prosecutor Nick Dry said.

His mental health deteriorated until the attack in the early hours of 21 December, which saw him go into Mr Calabro and his fiancee Ms Di Dio’s bedroom and bludgeon Mr Calabro with a sledgehammer before stabbing him.

Ms Di Dio, 21, who was visiting for Christmas, was able to escape and run upstairs before being chased by Cardinale, who killed her with the sledgehammer, the court heard.
