Most certainly fuller in the face (if that is the polite way of putting it) dyed hair, dark brown/ginger and less pale than when I saw her during the original trial.

I doubt she has access to hair dye in prison. It's more likely that she was bleaching her hair for years before she was arrested. Many kids who were blonde as kids darken to brown in adulthood. My cousin did. I doubt anyone who met her today would ever guess she was honey blonde up to almost her teens.

You can definitely dye your hair in prison!

It was reported late last year she had dyed her hair.

I think the idea was to make her somehow unrecognisable by other inmates.

When I saw the Court sketch,
I certainly didn't recognize her.

Although, on the other hand,
"grapevine" works like bushfire in prisons.
They know perfectly well who is who and what "paragraph/s" is/are involved ;)

A nurse who murdered seven babies was 'caught virtually red-handed' trying to kill another newborn
by dislodging her breathing tube
two hours after she was born,
a jury has been told.

The jury was told that the
'extremely premature' infant had been doing
'remarkably well'
for a baby born 15 weeks premature.

Baby K, who had not yet been named,
was intubated with a breathing tube while preparations were made to transport her to a specialist hospital,
the court heard.

Johnson said the allegation against Letby was
'very straightforward'
and that she had
'deliberately displaced'
the newborn’s breathing tube when her designated nurse had briefly left her side at about 3.40am.

The prosecutor said one of Letby’s colleagues,
Dr Ravi Jayaram,
walked in on the nurse
'doing nothing'
while Baby K’s blood oxygen levels collapsed suddenly.

Alarms would ordinarily have sounded to alert staff that a baby’s heart rate or blood oxygen levels had fallen below a certain level –
but this time they did not,
Johnson said.

'The reason the alarms didn’t sound was because somebody had disabled them'
he told the jury.

'When Dr Jayaram walked into the nursery
he saw Lucy Letby was standing over [Baby K].
[Baby K’s] blood oxygen was falling but the alarm was not sounding.
Not only that,
but Lucy Letby was doing nothing'.

Johnson said the
'only reasonable' thing for Letby to have done
was to call for help or assist the baby’s breathing'.

He added:
'The reason [Baby K] was desaturating was because the ET [endotracheal] tube had been displaced'.

'We suggest the fact Lucy Letby was doing nothing
and the fact the alarm was not sounding
is evidence from which you can conclude
that Lucy Letby,
the convicted murderer,
had displaced the tube'.

Jurors were told that Baby K collapsed twice in the following hours,
when Letby was allegedly present.

On both occasions,
the prosecutor said,
the breathing tube had been displaced.

Johnson said Letby was
'trying to create the impression'
that the newborn was dislodging her own tube
despite
being extremely premature and heavily sedated on morphine."

It's anyone's guess as to why they aren't there. Given how much they attended the original trial it's significant that they aren't there for this one, imo. I can only see it being due to;

  • Illness
  • They think she's guilty
  • She's asked (begged probably) them not to go, or;
  • Some other significant reason we aren't privy to
Maybe they've decided that it's all a big fit-up and have simply thrown in the towel?

As to her being advised not to give evidence - if I were a gambling man, and I am, I'd put strong money on that being the case the first time round but she did anyway. I'm not convinced that she takes sensible advice well, tbh.

My bets that the family have yet to really come to terms with the results from the first trial, trying to deal with the likely result from this trial and then still accepting the last one would be extremely difficult for them imo. I don't think we have seen anything from them for me to think they were accepting. It may simply be the additional strain on them from the first compounded by this one as well, perhaps advised by herself or themselves to not attend. All speculative though.
 
Anyone remember if this was the only case with a breathing tube coming out of place "by itself" at least once and also if its the only case with the alarm silenced on the monitor ? I think the fact that the doc walked in without it beeping is quite damning but would be much less so if there was even one example of the same in the case altogether.

ETA would be good to know if the "silence alarm" button would visually show it had been pressed if it had been, one might think dr jayaram would have checked it or noticed it considering he went into that room already suspicious of herself.

I guess the reason to retry Baby K was because she was originally one of the murder charges. Whilst the threshold was met for the CPS to charge with murder, the judge must have disagreed. But the police and CPS know full well that if she did attempt to murder Baby K, then those actions caused her to die, albeit the next day or so in Arrow Park. The family need justice. Even if the best they will get is guilty for Attempted Murder, it goes some way to validating that she did in fact cause her death (imo). Imagine knowing someone caused your baby to die and the CPS don't retry it...she was 25 weeks, she had good odds of surviving. Until Letby got hold of her (imo)

I don't remember another incidence of a breathing tube being moved, but I remember a couple of cases of the alarm not sounding with other babies. But I can't remember which ones.
