Dashcam appeal over missing diplomat

From the above:

"Police searching for a diplomat who went missing after going for a run have released details of routes he may have taken.

Richard Morris, 52, was last seen on the morning of 6 May after leaving home in Bentley, near Alton, in Hampshire.

He is described as white with a beard and greying hair and has a birthmark on his face. He was wearing a blue top, black shorts and blue trainers.

Drivers who were in the area are being urged to check dashcam footage.

Hampshire Police have asked anyone with dashcam footage who was on Isington Road or Isington Lane in Alton, Station Road or Blacknest Road in Bentley or The Street and Church Street in Binstead between 10:00 and 17:00 BST on Wednesday 6 May to get in touch."

Richard Morris went missing after going for a run from his Hampshire home (Hampshire Constabulary/PA)
''Prior to that, he was head of the Pacific department in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and has held senior diplomatic posts including in Australia and Mexico.

Hampshire police have asked drivers to check their dashcams if they were in the area between 10am and 5pm on May 6, particularly in Islington Road and Islington Lane, Station Road, Blacknest Road, The Street and Church Street.''

Good to see a sudden surge in the past 24 hrs of news coverage - perhaps the Foreign Office reads WS and hears our criticisms of a week without updates and the need to share some possible routes he took! Just a shame it took 11 days to issue the plea for dashcam footage!

Regarding the bolded part, what causes him to be classified as “high risk” if it’s not his job?

From the Daily Mail article linked by @dotr above:

Mr Morris has been deemed 'high risk' by the police because of how he went missing.

Sounds a bit fishy to me - we have been told he went for a run and they “didn’t think” a third party was involved. So I wonder what the rest of the “how” is that they’re not disclosing.

Or if they thought he wasn't in a good place mentally, maybe.

Certainly remains a possibility that cannot be discounted. Just on the balance of probabilities, when considering his circumstances, I thought it was not the most likely scenario - diplomats are usually a particular “type”, they are usually risk averse and more routine by nature, the FCO has regular oversight of them including their psychological well-being, and he was just gearing up for a fresh posting to a relatively nice place which, normally, is another moment of pride and prestige in their careers etc. But yeah, who knows what was going on at home, in his personal life or with family etc, so we can’t really speculate or discount the possibility he was unhappy.

Very strange that he’s not turned up yet after such comprehensive searches, even if it is a big area of forest.

Not common or likely, but British High Commission workers/diplomats have been murdered in the past , imo, speculation, fwiw, imo.
Assassination of Sir Henry Gurney - Wikipedia
''The Assassination of Sir Henry Gurney took place at the height of the Malayan Emergency. The British High Commissioner was killed by members of the Malayan Communist Party at Mile 56 ½, Kuala Kubu Road on 7 October 1951, on his way to Fraser's Hill for a meeting.[1][2]''

Death sentence for British embassy worker's killer
''Nov 2019
Ms Dykes had been working for the Department for International Development since January 2017, helping Lebanon to cope with the influx of refugees from the war in neighbouring Syria.
She had reportedly been due to fly home to the UK for Christmas
But she was abducted after leaving a bar in the popular Gemmayzeh district of Beirut where she went for a colleague's leaving party.''

BRITISH DIPLOMAT IN INDIA IS SLAIN ON WAY TO HIS OFFICE IN BOMBAY
1984
''The British Deputy High Commissioner for western India was shot and killed today by two unidentified assailants as he was being driven to his office in downtown Bombay, the police said.

The diplomat, Percy Norris, was shot at close range as his car slowed near a traffic junction about a quarter- mile from his office, according to the Bombay Police Commissioner, Julio Rebeiro.''

A missing Frensham student was found dead in Alice Holt Forest on 30th March.

UPDATE: Search for missing teenager Oliver Strode | Surrey Police

This case was handled by Surrey police whereas that of Richard Morris is being handled by Hampshire - presumably because of where the missing people lived. The cases are unrelated but similar so I presume that the two forces are liaising about the current case.

This is one part I don't get -

Fellow runners were asked to check his profile on the running app Strava in the hunt for clues to his movements when he disappeared last Wednesday.

Richard Morris: Specialist police officers search dense forest for missing diplomat

Would there be a reason police couldn't check this? (Asking for a techno dummy)

Maybe it's to do with their powers to search and the possibility he is voluntarily missing.

"We are asking that any man who was running in Bentley and the surrounding areas, between 10am and 4pm on 6 May, to make contact so we can start to narrow down the sightings.

"Officers will take a description of you, your clothing and details of your running route.

Richard Morris: Police searching for missing diplomat want to talk to runners

This has to be frustrating if they know he used the app.

Maybe one must be linked to another user to track them/ access their info? Much like FB 'friending' - if Morris doesn't accept the linking request- LE cannot see his info in the app?

What little I know about STRAVA is that you can compare your achievements with those of others. So you might compare how you did on a certain track with respect to other runners and if Richard Morris is among them, this could yield valuable info.
