Just to give you an idea of how bad the rainfall and flooding is here at the moment this is an article from our local paper. Normally these streams are lovely, tranquil and peaceful. They are raging at the moment, spectacular to watch but they show how fast water is flowing into the river Tyne. The second (short) video is quite amazing for us locals who know the area as that little waterfall is usually so gentle and it's like a mini niagra falls there now.

She could easily have bought sleeping pills or tranquillisers online without a prescription.

I can't help thinking what a shame that must be when nowadays there are so many opportunities for volunteering, helping the community etc, no one needs to feel worthless imo

I volunteered, and it is satisfying, however the deep self worthlessness somehow never escaped me.
It is different for everyone - always will be.

I guess, but tbh why would she pay something like 6 times the price for something online when she could go to the doctor and get sleeping tablets? Especially as you don't know what you are buying online. She comes over as a fairly sensible, realistic lady. If she had trouble sleeping then she could go to her doctor. It seems a bit of a long winded way to commit suicide. To order overpriced sleeping pills online, wait for them to be delivered (especially over Christmas time when the postal system is swamped anyway) and then wait until after Christmas Day. Practically she could have bought, say, 2 boxes of paracetamol which cost as little as 19p a box and a bottle of vodka which would cost less, is easier to get and would be enough to kill her. And why walk from Ponteland to Newcastle before taking sleeping tablets. If she was going to take sleeping tablets to kill herself there are plenty of empty fields in the countryside that she could have lay down in hidden by hedges after taking sleeping pills and she wouldn't have been found in time, or probably for days. There's no evidence that she's bought/taken any sleeping tablets. I think we may be overthinking something that really has no basis here.

I think we need to park the drugs thing up, since there's been nada in MSM or indeed any suggestion she took anything at all.

All we can do at this point is wait patiently and hope that Sally gets to be laid to rest so her family can say their goodbyes. It must have destroyed them yet they've been so dignified.

I agree with you.

I think the 11 mile walk was her method of getting tired. If she hadn't slept since Christmas Day morning, then by 6am Boxing Day she would have been exhausted.

I agree too, don't think she needed anything else to make her any more tired.
I think she was already exhausted on that CCTV. I think the arm swinging was to keep her pace going to get her where she wanted to be.

I really can't see a respectable, middle class grandmother going out and buying them and tbh she would need to know a dealer, which for a nearly 60 year old woman from Darras Hall isn't likely.

I was just responding to comments suggesting that it would be difficult to obtain sleeping pills or tranqs, that she would "need to know a dealer".

And if you're planning to commit suicide I don't think you'd worry about paying over the odds.

Suicidal people often take pills as a back-up in case their primary means is too slow. I'm not saying she did take pills, but it seems quite feasible to me, and would explain that apparent 15 minute gap in the CCTV. I can imagine that she might sit for a little while waiting to feel sleepy before entering the water.

Paracetamol can kill, but it takes days and is not pleasant. It won't send you to sleep peacefully. I don't think the suggestion was ever that pills were a primary means of suicide, more a way of easing the way. She did it the way she wanted.

I work in a public setting frequently visited by many older people. (Older than, say... 50). Quite a few of them have confided that being retired is not always what they expected. Your kids are grown and no longer "need" you. You lose the social interactions that you used to have through work. Women who stayed home with their kids have a feeling of no purpose .... depression is a huge reality for many of these folks. And there is a stigma that exists about admitting it.

I am so sorry about Sally. It sounds like she kept her game face on, and finally just was so sad that she wanted to end it all. I hope her family knows that it is not a reflection on them at all ~ clearly she loved them very much.

Well worded post - I agree.

I walked past a shop in Newcastle that still has Sally's picture in the window. So sad. I feel for her family

Exactly, thank you. I was the one who suggested that some form of sleeping pill or tranquilizer might have been used to ease the way into taking that step into the water. And yes, it is very common for suicidal people to use pills as a backup. I have sadly known two people who have done just that. And yes, in the end, she did it the way she wanted. We will likely never know exactly what that looked like.

Are they still searching the river? It's been almost two weeks, she should surface soon ... :(

Family of missing grandmother Sally Allan pay their respects by laying flowers at the site she was last seen on CCTV two weeks ago

Her family were today joined by a large crowd of well-wishers outside the Copthorne Hotel on Newcastle's Quayside as they laid flowers in honour of the missing mother of three.

...

At the gathering this morning, her husband said: 'Today wasn't organised by the family, it was initiated by a Facebook group.

'We wanted to do something for Sally without having a funeral and it has been very hard to deal with, but so many people wanted to come and as a family we thought it was a great opportunity to greet the people who gave us so much support.

'It's very nice to see that there are so many people here that care about mental health issues and want to remove the stigma associated with it.'

Also, just seen the JustGiving page which her family set up to raise funds for MIND, has reached over £14,000!

Beautiful! That must feel nice for the family. A little bit of warmth for their hearts in times of despair.

Wow, I love what they've done with these flowers, some gorgeous bouquets there.

Don't they look so much lovelier with the wrappings taken off!

I can never understand why people leave all the paper and cellophane on. Those tributes always end up looking more like a rubbish tip.

Agreed - a lot of them have been properly tied and look like they're from a florist rather than a normal shop. I love the photo with the Tyne Bridge behind too, it all seems very fitting and I hope her family take comfort in the fact so many people care. I just so want Sally to be found now so that her family know for sure, and can lay her to rest. Such a sad story and so well publicised, so much money raised with more to come no doubt. If it makes someone with mental health issues reach out for help then that will be part of Sally's legacy :(
