Specialist search teams join police hunt for midwife, 28, who vanished on her way to work four days ago

A specialist search and rescue team has joined the police hunt for a 'high risk' midwife who hasn't been seen for four days.

Samantha Eastwood, 28, vanished on her way home from work at the maternity centre of the Royal Stoke University hospital in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire at around 7.45am on Friday.

North Yorkshire Police have also joined the search as Samantha has connections to Whitby.

Police confirmed they are not treating the incident as kidnap but are urgently appealing for sightings.

Police reveal where missing midwife Samantha Eastwood was last seen

Police are studying CCTV around Stoke-on-Trent's main train station as they step up their search for missing midwife Samantha Eastwood.

They have revealed the 28-year-old, from Baddeley Green, was last seen at Stoke Station at midday on Saturday.

That is more than 16 hours after colleagues raised the alarm when Samantha did not turn up for work at Royal Stoke University Hospital on Friday night.

Now Staffordshire Police are sifting through CCTV footage inside and outside the station as they try to establish whether Samantha caught a train and where she headed.

There's not a lot about this case so far but if she isn't found very soon I suspect the media will be on to it PDQ.

Description:

"Samantha is white, approximately 5ft 3in tall, of medium build and with shoulder-length ginger hair. She has brown eyes and a fair complexion with freckles."

Appeal over missing Stoke-on-Trent midwife Samantha Eastwood

Police are looking for a missing midwife after she failed to turn up for work.

Samantha Eastwood was last seen leaving Royal Stoke University Hospital at 07:45 on Friday and did not return for her night shift later that day.

A friend of the 28-year-old said her family was going "through hell worrying about her".

The hospital and Staffordshire Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Just thinking, and it may be nothing, but there are some parallels with the Claudia Lawrence case from York.

Both female professionals (midwife and chef respectively)
Single (though Claudia apparently had a very active sex life)
Both returning from work in the morning but not the early hours.

Police have said there are similarities between Claudia's case and those of Melanie Hall (a 25 year old hospital clerical worker from Bradford on Avon) and Joanna Yeates (a 25 year old landscape architect from Hampshire).

I just came

I just came here to post this has shades of Claudia Lawrence about it...

I believe Joanna Yeates killer was found and jailed so I don't think it's connected? (Wasn't it her neighbour?)

The fact they've made an arrest quite quickly indicates they must at least have some idea what's going on.

Yes, he was, however at the time the police were looking at possible connections between these murders. There's also a long-standing theory that Claudia was killed by someone from her sex life, but more recently Christopher Halliwell has been looked at and AFAIK not yet ruled out.

It's good the police are actively looking for possible serial killers where murders have features in common. Maybe they've learned from the Peter Tobin case, where a number of seemingly random murders and disappearances eventually turned out to be the work of a hitherto unsuspected serial killer.

When the UK press uses terms like "High Risk" does it mean something different to "vulnerable"? ...what are the implications?
On this side of the pond we see a lot of cases where the missing person has been described as vulnerable and this can encompass a victim that is: suicidal, drug-using, a runaway, suffering mental illness etc

TBH I've no idea. To me, "high risk" relates to lifestyle, actions and behaviours, whereas "vulnerable" suggests factors outside the individual's control such as age, health issues or disabilities. That's just me, though.

RE: the arrest in this case being "released under investigation" - this would mean that they are still a person of interest? Isn't it like being out on bail but without bail conditions?

I would say, yes, the police would still have their eyes on him, but have nothing concrete to detain him. Or perhaps they think if released he might lead them to Samantha. When they described her as vulnerable initially, as an ex-nurse myself, I imediately thought of stress/depression and worried they thought she was suicidal. Many nurses are attracted to the profession because they have already been through lots of things in their own life and then the stress of the job can push them over the edge.

But now a male has been questioned I am worried that "vulnerable" means she was in an abusive relationship or had just left one. I hope they can find her soon. I feel for all victims but crimes against nurses always hit me hard, nearly every nurse I know is a lovely person and that to be honest was sometimes the only thing that got you through the day.

Just checked news again and the BBC is reporting that the man was arrested on suspicion of "kidnapping" Kidnap arrest in missing midwife probe
Good to see the police being proactive here, they obviously have suspicions of what has happened. I hope Samantha is taking time out herself but I think it's extremely unlikely that she would just not show up for work. Midwives are stretched to a huge extent even without anyone going sick and she would know that not phoning ahead to warn them she wouldn't be in could cause serious problems. It's a huge no-no to not call in as soon as you can.

I read on BBC news he has been released on "conditional bail" Kidnap arrest in missing midwife probe
=
Conditional bail means that the person has to abide by certain conditions. These conditions may require that the person lives at a certain address or does not contact certain people. The police may also impose a curfew or take away their passport and may require that they report to the police station at set times.
