Oh my, fascinating case, and one I'm not familiar with. Thanks for posting the info. Very interesting reading.

so a handful of the people closest to him all have a different story

~sigh~

he fled to Africa, he committed suicide, he fled to Scotland etc. etc.

If you go to the pub where Lord Lucan's wife fled that night for assistance you can still meet people who were either there or knew them at the time of the murder, I went with a friend when I was in London, once we expressed an interest a few old regulars piped up. I believe he fled somewhere comfortable and protected at first, then as people became less and less generous with him he lived more and more of a transient lifestyle. No reason not to think he was given enough income to get by for his lifetime though, many of his friend were and still are connected to members of the royal family and English aristocracy naturally, considering his own family background.

I'm a bit shy about posting this article but as the thread's here.....

http://www.express.co.uk/life-style/life/447275/Was-Lord-Lucan-killed-by-a-hitman

I think the drama/documentary airs this week in Britain? I can't watch, but if anybody does, I would LOVE to know how they reconcile the idea of a professional 'hitman' with what is surely one of the most botched murders in the history of London murders.

Personally, I doubt Lucan is alive now, with his lifestyle, but I think there is a very good chance he was for many years. He had the languages, the education, maybe a bit of money and the contacts to make a new life abroad. I always wondered if his name might crop up in a Russian file one day.....just a handful of the friends he had would have been enough to gain him entry, and they're very good at keeping secrets for ages and ages.

I know the favoured destination for him was South Africa, but as that was where everyone expected him to go, it's a very good reason not to go there, if you know what I mean.

I much prefer to think of him ending his days in the top flat of a crumbling, communist-era tower block in freezing Moscow, myself.

Surely at least one of the many people claiming to know where he is should have a photograph of him post-1974?

Sorry I can't tell you where Lord Lucan ended up, but... I highly recommend Aiding and Abetting by Muriel Spark, a fictionalized version of the Lucan case in which there are two men claiming to be Lucan. Not Sparks's best work, but an entertaining read for anyone who has followed the Lucan saga.

(Personally, I prefer to believe his friends financed him for a time and then he eventually died in "reduced circumstances".)
