It was said that Yostin Mosquera did require a Spanish interpreter during his first court appearance. I’ll find the source now but it seems to me he was not fluent in english if this is the case.

so usually foreigners get interpreters,
making sure they understand everything.

But I also wonder what level his knowledge of English is.
Possibly just everyday simple phrases.

There's also a possibility (though perhaps a slim one) that he may not have read English very well, and therefore may not have understood UK luggage tags.

I'm pretty sure he would have recognised the names of the deceased persons on them though, considering he knew them (same names regardless of language?) JMO.

It depends what was actually on the cases. The MSN article only states: "Information on the suitcases linked them to an address in Scotts Road in London." Names are possible, but it also could have been something a foreign visitor to the country might not so easily recognise.

But as @Inthedetails noted, it's also quite possible he *wanted* the suitcases to be found and identified, and was hoping the police would assume they had been murdered during their planned trip to Bristol.

Yes, he would have been advised to accept an interpreter.
Another advantage is that it gives you extra thinking time when responding to questions.

He may have a good command of English. Lots of people learn English, and many pick it up from American films and TV.

I think Albert spoke good Spanish, so they may have communicated in Spanish. the introduction to some of his Flickr albums are in English, Spanish and French (he was French) and he travelled widely in S America and Spanish speaking Cuba. Though he could have used Google Translate for Flickr, I suppose.

On the other hand Yostin seems to have been friends (or at least socialised) with Aron, a S London rugby player…who may not have spoken any Spanish,

But, better an interpreter than not. His English may have been good for meeting English speaking tourists but not for court.

I was checking to see if there had been any preliminary court hearings about this, and noticed that though the judge had set April next year as a court date he was going to try for an earlier date even if that meant not using the Old Bailey. Will we be able to find out if the date is being brought forward?

I am sure there will be a further preliminary hearing between now an April on a case of this magnitude but if that doesn’t happen then unlikely.

I think he should have to plead guilty or not guilty at this hearing but I don't think there will be explanations at this hearing. If he was to plead guilty I'm not sure if he'd have to explain the incident at this hearing or if they'd set another date for that? If he pleads not guilty then it would mostly be about setting the trial date I think and any technicalities regarding trial that need to be agreed beforehand.

The Colombian national wore a grey tracksuit and spoke to confirm his identity with the help of a Spanish interpreter in court. He was not asked to enter pleas to the charges against him.

During the hearing, trial judge Mr Justice Bennathan KC moved the provisional Old Bailey trial date back from April 14 next year to April 29 next year.

The senior judge set a further plea and case management hearing for the week of November 25 and remanded the defendant into custody"

I wonder why he wasn't asked to enter a plea? If he plead guilty, there would be no need to set a trial date and reserve court weeks? The backlog in the courts is so long.
