GUILTY UK - Women Were 'Kept As Slaves For Over 30 Years

I think the 30 yr old is either one of the daughters of the other two women, and maybe the male??? or maybe she was pregnant when put into slavery, or may even be the daughter of the couple.

And they have been foreign nationals.....what for 30 years???? lived there in London and never bothered to become citizens!!!! ggrrrr....... Does anyone know what nationality they are yet???? I am betting it is from a country where it is normal for the wealthier to have "live in house help".........these two took it too far, maybe didn't want to pay uk wages???

Just thinking aloud, but wow, how can this happen??? Did they go for a job interview maybe and get locked in? One was irish...and one Malaysian...

And re above the one year: it is all over our news here and it mentioned October but that the police had to confirm their story was correct.....I think that was when they were actually saved...

How can this even be justified? What would a 67 year old couple need three women for anyway? For what purpose? Why 30 years? It was reported that the women were not likely sexually abused but were mentally and physically abused.

I'm not sure. But it says they lived in a house, not an apartment. If you look at the prices of just a small row house in some parts of Lambeth, it could mean they are quite wealthy and wanted servants because they had been used to having them where they came from - and maybe found the costs of proper hired help in London too expensive?

Some dang annoying fool on a Chelsea (localish) team football site is claiming his girlfriend knows the house, but hasn't said where. Grrr.

UK Special Envoy for Human Trafficking Anthony Steen told CNN he was not surprised by the case as there were likely to be many cases of domestic slavery in the country.

"We don't know the number but we know it's pretty huge. Domestics are hidden away," he said.

"The difference between slavery when it was manifest in America -- as it was in England -- was that you could see it everywhere," Steen said. "Since then having abolished it, it's grown, it's got bigger and bigger -- in fact they say it's between 10 and 20 times the size it was in the 1800s."

Steen said the largest number of people involved in slavery in Britain were in brothels, and that group was followed by men held against their will in debt bondage.

bbm - Frightening!!

Horrific story, those poor women must be traumatised to the point they'll never be able to function "normally", especially the youngest one. Makes me feel sick!

I'll be watching the news for latest updates, I'm intrigued as to who these woman are and whether they were ever reported missing in the first place.

I want to see the perps.
Who are these demons?
Show them far and wide!

They still haven't established if 30 year old was born in the house or not. I guess that means there was a baby there when the other two were first imprisoned. That figures, the couple wanted nursemaids for the baby? Does this mean a missing baby from 30 years ago is about to be found, or was this a trafficked/sold baby?

I have searched everywhere for a missing 20 something Irish woman from the eighties, but found nothing that fits. This could well be a young woman who left Ireland, as many did then, to find work in London. She may have been brought up in a convent if she was the child of an unmarried woman/orphan, and had to leave at 16. There may have been no-one to report her missing.

I'm guessing the judge thinks there is no possibility the suspects will flee as they've been given bail. Either because they have so many assets/links in London, or their own country is too dangerous to return to? Somalia? Afghanistan? Iraq or Iran?

The IB times obviously know the house and ran an article sometime in the early hours about the couple charged. The headline is there, but they have pulled the article! I missed it! Anyone see it before it disappeared? The headline still coming up on google says they were just 'a nice, normal couple'.

ETA you can see link to missing article at the bottom of the main one at the link above.

Probably crazy but.....three years (1986) after these women were imprisoned, an estate agent in Fulham disappeared. Her name is Suzy Lamplugh and she has never been found. it's suspected a man imprisoned for another abduction/murder killed Suzy too. It's not far from Lambeth, though it is North not South of the river Thames, which makes a difference.

But as police in this case are checking other linked addresses for bodies of women who may have been killed in captivity....it makes me wonder what info they have that leads them to suspect that? Suzy's case gained so much media, it's quite possible a captor would have found her too risky to keep alive. She has been declared dead though, and it's very unlikely there is a connection - prosecutors would have fought bail tooth and nail if there was.

There are some interesting bits of information in this blog. Seems that there might be a lot more to this story. What were they arrested for in the 1970's?

If they can't return to the house, where will they go? At least if they are at the house, police will know where they are.

12.47 The two suspects who were arrested yesterday were arrested in the 1970s, police say.

11.39 The London Evening Standard reports that the bail conditions of the couple arrested, who are believed to be Asian, stipulate they must not return to the house where they lived. The Standard says officers from Scotland Yard’s Human Trafficking Unit are investigating if other women were held captive at the “ordinary” address over the last three decades.

I'm guessing the judge thinks there is no possibility the suspects will flee as they've been given bail. Either because they have so many assets/links in London, or their own country is too dangerous to return to? Somalia? Afghanistan? Iraq or Iran?.

An article I just read on the Daily Mail site stated that the couple had become frail and the women had become their carers. Maybe they appear to frail to flee?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...30-years-servitude-police-search-victims.html

I don't agree with that though, they should be in jail for the crimes they've commited (or for now suspected of comitting). However I'm sure if their identity / location is released they will be at risk of abuse from the public, so I imagine they are in a place of safety?

Hopefully this news will trigger more people to come forward about other cases or lead the police to linked addresses.

Another article on the Daily Mail site about a previous arrest on the couple in the 1970s:

Did anyone see the 6.30 evening news in England, Thursday night? I've heard there was an interview with the head of the charity where she said they were first contacted by one of the women one year ago. I'm still searching for a link though.

I think this local blog may soon get some of the details we haven't heard yet.

This article gives a timeline of when the women contacted the charity and the rescue.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukn...hey-escaped-suburban-jail-after-30-years.html

On October 18, taking what they no doubt believed to be a huge risk, the 57-year-old Irish woman managed to evade the attention of her alleged masters long enough to telephone the charity.

"LONDON - Three women enslaved for 30 years in a London house were beaten during their ordeal, police said on Friday.

The three were rescued from a house in south London and on Thursday police arrested a man and a woman, both aged 67, in what they said was the worst case of domestic servitude ever to emerge in Britain.

At a news conference on Friday, Commander Steve Rodhouse said the women were beaten and controlled emotionally.

"What we are finding is a complicated and disturbing picture of emotional control over many years," he said"

They say the couple is Asian, not British- wondering if that means S Asian as in Indian, or Chinese?

"Mr Rodhouse said the force had uncovered a “complicated and disturbing picture of emotional control over many years — brainwashing would be a simple term for it”. It is believed that the two suspects are Asian and that the 30-year-old victim is the daughter of one of the other victims.

Police said there was no evidence of sexual abuse but one of the women claimed to have been beaten. Officers recovered 55 bags of evidence during a 12-hour search of the house.

The charity that helped to free the women from the property said all three were “quite traumatised” and “very relieved to be out”.

One of the trio is reported to have been refused medical treatment by the couple, despite telling them that she believed she had suffered a stroke"

Anybody have any idea what "invisible handcuffs" are?

My impression is that they mean it's psychological.

"An estimated 4,000 slaves are trapped in Britain – but the figure could be even higher as many are hidden from view.

The Serious Organised Crime Agency identified 2,000 potential trafficking victims in the UK last year alone, 549 of them children.

The problem is so large that the Government plans to crack down with a modern-day slavery Bill.

There would be long jail terms for those using abduction, threats or extortion. And convicted slavers would be banned from supplying workers for agriculture, forestry and food processing.

Charity Unseen supports survivors of slavery. Head Andrew Wallace said: “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to introduce a Bill that will send a clear statement and bring focus to the issue.”

Lots of pics and video, interesting and scary insight into the growing world problem of human trafficking, scroll way down for that.

"The Lambeth slaves allegedly held captive for 30 years may only have had rare glimpses of daylight when they were allowed to hang out the washing or go shopping accompanied by their captors.

The three women - including a British 30-year-old never allowed to step into the outside world - were held in 'horrific conditions', the charity who helped free them said today.

Their decades of forced servitude ended last month when one of the victims apparently made a 'call for help' when her 'friend' - another victim - was refused medical treatment after having a stroke.

The Irishwoman of 57, who made the call, fled with the unwell 69-year-old Malaysian and the youngest victim, who were all held in servitude by a non-British couple in their 60s for three decades.

David Cameron's official spokesman said today the Prime Minister regarded the case as 'utterly appalling'.
