oh yes, you and I both!!It's one of the benefits of WS, imo. The rabbit holes and additional info I learn is fun - you never know where a case will lead.
I know, I know... I'm a nerd But hoping fellow WSers get it.

It's definitely possible it seems. Details aren't really forthcoming. Or he could have decided he'd rather live there than go back the US. He's not the first person who willingly defected there. Is it possible that he had a previous relationship with the government or a person in North Korea? (not acusing him of spying, I just can't think of another reason he would cross into North Korea)
I think this man is tragically experiencing a mental health crisis. He was in danger of being kicked out of the military and his nephew he loved so deeply just passed away. It's definitely possible it seems. Details aren't really forthcoming. I think he is really struggling, because he doesn't get in trouble, and yet in South Korea he was arrested and acting erratically.![]()
Travis King: US soldier who entered North Korea is 'not the type to get into trouble', sister says
The serviceman had been telling family how much he was looking forward to coming home, making his dash to North Korea all the more baffling, Jaqueda Gates says, as she urges Washington to do more to get him out of the secretive state.news.sky.com
Hmmm. Vague, but that’s to be expected. I suspect this is going to go on for quite a while![]()
North Korea says it's investigating Travis King in 1st response to United Nations messages
North Korea for the first time responded to messages regarding a U.S. soldier who ran across the demilitarized zone two weeks ago, according to defense officials.abcnews.go.com
yep sounds accurate- The United States has declined so far to classify Army Private Travis King as a prisoner of war, despite his being taken into North Korean custody after he crossed into the country last month, four U.S. officials told Reuters.
The decision, which could mean King is not covered by the protections entitled to prisoners of war under the Geneva Convention, is highly sensitive for the U.S. military given its commitment to leave no soldier behind enemy lines…
As an active-duty soldier he might appear to qualify as a POW, given that the United States and North Korea technically remain at war. The 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty.
But factors including King's decision to cross into North Korea of his own free will, in civilian attire, appear to have disqualified him from that status, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

I’m not sure he will find a racial utopia there. Let’s hope he comes out of it okay and can get treatment and face the consequences of his actions leading up to all this.![]()
North Korea offers the first official confirmation that it has detained US soldier Travis King
North Korea has offered its first official confirmation that it detained a U.S. soldier who bolted into its country last month.apnews.com
A statement from the country’s government-controlled Korean Central News Agency claimed King had expressed “his willingness to seek refugee” in North Korea or a third country.
It also claimed King confessed that he had decided to enter North Korea as “he harbored ill feeling against inhuman maltreatment and racial discrimination within the U.S. Army.”
King had crossed the military demarcation line from South Korea into North Korea in July during a tour at the Joint Security Area.
KCNA added that he had admitted of “illegally” intruding into the territory of North Korea.
