Such a sad turn of events. I'm on an RV trip in Arizona with almost non existent WiFi and cell service. Thank you all for keeping this thread updated. This is close to home. I lived many years in Kearns when the area was a bit better. The area had so much potential and went so bad. The Olympic speed skating oval and rec center is there. In fact, in the past year, a 13 year old shot his step brother in the back of the head killing him, almost directly across the street from where Nicole was kidnapped.

Two men booked for kidnapping and murdering Kearns woman, police have not found her body | ABC4 Utah
[...]

Police say they found the white pickup truck possibly involved in transporting Nicole after the murder.

They also have a .40 caliber handgun and bullet investigators believe was used.

“The firearm of the same caliber of the bullet that was found in the West Valley City location was later found at the residents where the suspects were located, and a search warrant was served,” the Sheriff adds.

While looking through the apartment, CSI teams found a substantial amount of blood and say it appears someone was trying to clean everything up.

Sheriff Rivera believes there are more suspects involved in the crime.

“Somebody does know something and they need to come forward,” she says. “This is not right to take a young girls life in this way, it’s just wrong.”

Two men who allegedly killed missing Utah woman Conzuelo “Nicole” Solorio-Romero did it because she “knew too much,” according to charging documents obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune. They had been questioning her about what she told police regarding another individual, who had been taken into federal custody, authorities said.

It is beyond horrifying to imagine the terror this young lady felt during her last moments. :(

From the article:

... Authorities say Solorio-Romero denied speaking to cops, but as the documents paraphrased it, Tobar allegedly said she “knew too much” and she was not going to leave the apartment.

... Solerio-Romero allegedly told one of the witnesses that “her husband did not commit suicide as the witness believed, but was murdered by these two (Tobar and Medina-Reyes).”

Tobar allegedly moved his head. Reyes shot Solorio-Romero in the back of hers, authorities said. Authorities have not identified a third individual, described only as “the Mechanic,” whom they claimed helped Tobar and Reyes get rid of the body.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill says, “She was confronted and there were other witnesses who saw what happened. There was some discussion about what she knew or didn’t know.”

[...]

“She denied talking to the police,” Gill says.

After a while, Romero turned to another person in the room and accused Tobar and Medina of murder.

“[She claimed] her husband didn’t commit suicide, rather, ‘These same guys who got me here are the ones who allegedly murdered my husband,’” Gill says.

... Documents state witnesses left the room immediately after the shooting, but some claim they heard a second shot then saw Tobar exiting the room with blood on his hands.

He says, “The pistol had been soaked in a chemical that had started to corrode the gun.”

Cristian Noe Morales-Gonzales, 26, who goes by the moniker “the mechanic,” became the sixth person arrested in connection with the kidnapping and killing of Nicole Solorio-Romero. He was arrested on Thursday, March 26, 2021. Salt Lake County Jail

[...]

Unified police arrested Cristian Noe Morales-Gonzales, 26, Thursday and booked him into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of obstruction of justice. Police say he was called “the mechanic” and he is accused of helping to dispose of the body of Conzuelo “Nicole” Solorio-Romero, 25.

His arrest occurred on the same day that numerous police officers from several agencies — including Unified police — were spotted by witnesses in Tooele County south of the Tooele Army Depot along state Route 73. Witnesses told the Deseret News that tents were set up and an area sectioned off with yellow police tape.

[...]

After the shooting, the group went to Tacos Mi Caramelo, 1808 W. 3500 South in West Valley City, to talk about what to do next, according to police. While there, Tobar called someone known as “the mechanic” to “come assist him with disposing of Nicole’s body,” a new police affidavit states.

Police say Morales-Gonzales was later identified as “the mechanic.” He went back to the apartment with Tobar, and later Tobar and Morales-Gonzales “left in a white truck with a trailer to go get rid of Nicole’s body,” according to the affidavit.

Tobar left the restaurant in a red Mitsubishi Eclipse, according to surveillance video seized by police. On Thursday, the Mitsubishi was found at 4861 S. 4055 West. Police say Morales-Gonzales was also found there and was arrested.

[...]

On Tuesday, Carolina Marquez, 38, and Fernando Marquez, 22, a mother and son, were also arrested for investigation of murder, obstruction of justice and kidnapping in connection with Solorio-Romero’s death. Ivan Jesus Acosta, 27, was arrested for investigation of kidnapping and obstruction of justice.

Carolina Marquez is the owner of Tacos Mi Caramelo.

[...]

A relative told police that she was on the phone with Solorio-Romero when she said Fernando Marquez “and two other males were threatening her (Solorio-Romero) with guns. This was the last contact (the relative) had with Nicole,” the affidavit says.

A few hours later, the relative called Fernando Marquez — who was Solorio-Romero’s landlord — and was heard pleading, “Give us Nicole back, we just want Nicole back,” according to the affidavit.

... In a case with lots of nicknames, Tobar is known as “Chaparro” and Medina-Reyes goes by the monikers “Moreno” and “the Venezuelan.” Morales was known as “The Mechanic.”

[...]

According to new court documents filed Friday, after he was arrested, Tobar told police “that Carolina Marquez instructed him and Medina-Reyes to pick up Nicole because she owed Carolina Marquez money.”

From there, Marquez told the group to “kill time” because she wouldn’t be available for a few hours. So they drove Solorio-Romero “to the Wyoming border and back,” the charges state.

She was eventually taken to a studio apartment in West Valley City at 1136 W. Elba Ave., which is Carolina Marquez’s residence, and shot in the head, according to charging documents.

Why police stayed quiet after the body of missing Kearns woman was found (kslnewsradio.com)
“First of all, they would have to identify the body and make sure that in fact, it was the body of this deceased woman. And, have the medical examiner do their examination to make sure of that,” Skordas said.

Then there’s the importance of making sure that the family knows, before the media.

“Typically, law enforcement would want the family, the victim’s family, to know that she had been found before they alert the public,” he said.

Finally, according to Skordas, it can benefit investigators if officials were to keep a temporary secret.

“The District Attorneys would want to keep their information, their investigation, their findings at least secret until they can get those charges filed so that other individuals who ended up getting charged, don’t flee,” Skordas said.

Warrant outlines new details in case of kidnapped, killed Kearns woman | KSL.com
[...]

New court documents contain added new twists in the already complicated case involving the killing of 25-year-old Conzuelo "Nicole" Solorio-Romero, who prosecutors say was kidnapped from her home in Kearns, murdered at another location, then dumped at a third location that has yet to be disclosed.

[...]

On Feb. 9, Carolina Marquez called police to say someone was trying to break into a residence at 402 N. 1400 West and that her children were inside, according to the warrant. When police arrived, they found Solorio-Romero's sister and another man. They told officers that "they were looking for Nicole Romero, and thought they heard screaming coming from inside the home and began banging on the door."

Police received permission from the homeowner to search the residence. Inside, they "came across a male hiding in a closet with a sheet hiding his face," the warrant says.

Caleb Abisay Vela, 27, was taken into custody on outstanding warrants. Police believe Vela was in the house where Solorio-Romero was killed at the time of the shooting, according to the warrant.

While police were questioning Vela, he received a message on Facebook Messenger from Tobar, the affidavit states.

On Feb. 10, Vela placed several calls from the Salt Lake County Jail to an unknown woman. The calls were recorded, per jail policy.

“Over the course of several conversations, the unknown female discusses Ivan Acosta with Caleb and made the statement, ‘We checked the cameras and they were not following me when we picked up the boss lady. But Ivan ... does not know how and then he ratted us out,’” the warrant states.

Vela was convicted of aggravated assault on March 9 for an unrelated incident and was to be turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to be deported, court records indicate.

Acosta, who is being held in the Summit County Jail, is charged with obstructing justice and abuse or desecration of a dead bod. He was scheduled to have a detention hearing Friday, but it was postponed until next week. Acosta is listed in the warrant as being Carolina Marquez’s boyfriend.

[...]

On March 12, police received a tip that “Carolina was burning a blanket relating to the murder of Nicole Romero,” the warrant states.

Defense moves to suppress evidence in murder of Kearns woman (kslnewsradio.com)
[...]

Tobar, also known as “Chaparro,” is one of two men accused of taking Romero from her home in Kearns. Police believe they took her to an apartment in West Valley, where she was killed. On Feb. 15, police executed a search warrant on Tobar’s apartment in Midvale, finding what they believe is the murder weapon.

The motion from Tobar’s defense team says the warrant specifies police were to search unit 16 of the English Manor Apartments. However, Tobar lived in unit 15, right next door. Defense attorneys say when police searched Tobar’s residence, they lacked proper authorization. As a result, they say all of the evidence found inside should be excluded from the case.

[...]

If the motion succeeds, that doesn’t mean the case is ruined. Prosecutors will have to rely on evidence seized at other places and on witness statements. However, if the motion is denied, Burbank believes a good defense team will be able to use the mistake to make the jury believe there is reasonable doubt.

Utahn accused of helping to dispose of kidnapped woman's body will stay in jail | KSL.com
A judge in Salt Lake City declined to lift a no-bail order Tuesday for a man accused of helping to dispose of a 25-year-old Kearns woman's body in February.

Third District Judge Patrick Corum said it's clear Cristian Noe Morales-Gonzales failed to appear in court in prior criminal cases and is a flight risk. However, Corum said he didn't find there's clear and convincing evidence Morales Gonzales is a danger to the community.

The 26-year-old man hasn't yet entered pleas to obstructing justice, a first-degree felony; and abuse or desecration of a human body, a third-degree felony. He is one of six people prosecutors have formally charged after linking them to the disappearance or death of Conzuelo "Nicole" Solorio-Romero, 25.

He returns to court May 28 for a scheduling conference.

Suspect in killing of Kearns woman says he shouldn't face death penalty | KSL.com
One of several people charged in the death of a 25-year-old Kearns woman contends there's no reason he should face the possibility of the death penalty while two others accused of similar roles do not.

Defense attorney Neal Hamilton says Orlando Esiesa Tobar, 29, is not the most culpable of those arrested in the kidnapping and murder case of Conzuelo "Nicole" Solorio-Romero.

He wants a judge to reduce the charge that Tobar, of Honduras, faces by one level — from aggravated murder, a capital offense, down to murder, which carries a maximum penalty of up to life in prison.

[...]

In another twist to the case, a key witness has been jailed by the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office in order to ensure that he'll show up to court to testify.

A material witness warrant was issued May 17 for Caleb Abisay Vela, 27. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Thursday.

According to court documents, Vela was an eyewitness to Solorio-Romero's death, and "his testimony will establish essential elements" in the cases against Orlando Tobar, Jorge Medina-Reyes, Carolina Marquez, Fernando Marquez and Ivan Acosta.

[...]

Tobar returns to court on June 25.

Orlando Esiesa Tobar, 32, pleaded guilty to murder and aggravated kidnapping, both first-degree felonies, on Friday, May 24. He was initially charged with aggravated murder, which was later amended, and was facing an obstruction of justice charge, which has now been dismissed without prejudice.

According to court documents, Conzuelo “Nicole” Solorio-Romero was taken from her home by two men with guns in February of 2021. Officials say she had alerted a friend through a video message who contacted the police and nearby witnesses also reported seeing a woman forced into a vehicle.

The documents say she was brought to a West Valley studio apartment where witnesses watched two men force her into the residence at knifepoint. Witnesses said they saw “Chaparro” — later identified as Tobar — question her about speaking with police.

Fernando Marquez and Carolina Marquez are awaiting trial on murder and kidnapping charges.
