I have felt that JM isn't actually on the run. I didn't get that feeling after last nights PC. No mention of probable location. No mention of danger he poses while at large. I'm guessing his lawyer has been in contact with LE and they are hammering out details and terms for turning himself in. I'm hearing very little about a y manhunt. Anyone else pick up this idea?

Though my gut instincts about this case appear to have been completely wrong so far (!) I agree. I find it hard to believe LE lost JM - especially with the FBI in town for several days now, and him having been in touch with his family (ie to borrow his sister's car). But given this, I don't understand why he isn't in jail at this point, especially after last night's press conference - ??

The strangest thing to me right now is the fact that there were no pleas to the public during the press conference yesterday to be careful because a dangerous person was at large. Coupled with the "we just want to talk to him" lines from LE, it just strikes me as so counter to the messaging we normaly get when there is a confirmed suspect in a case like this. I don't know what to make of it, but it certainly doesn't seem like LE is as vocal in their concern for his whereabouts for public safety purposes. What to make of this?

Granted the FBI and other LEOs are purportedly involved in the case, I would not be surprised if Longo has been coached to appeal to the suspect emotionally rather than characterize him as a volatile criminal with malicious motives. In my opinion it's a very smart move.

This is so odd to me. I can't even imagine this taking place. I'm not saying it didn't! It's just certainly not the norm, IMO.

I agree, very strange. The most reasonable explanations given by insightful posters here maybe

a) He didn't realise he wouldn't be appointed a public defender as he wasn't charged
b) once he asked for representation he couldn't be questioned about it

:gaah: it still doesn't make sense and when I see Longo explaining it in interviews, I think he's holding back a smirk

Hello, everyone. This is my first post, but have been reading since the MH case about five years ago. I love all of the input from people on this board!

Excellent question! I believe they are still being very cautious about what they say in order to avoid a possible defamation lawsuit.

I am not convinced that LE is confident in their accusations as of yet. There seems to be much mystery.

Saying he might be dangerous with lack of evidence to support that could really backfire in their faces if it turns out he is innocent.

Question:

If the attorney knows where JM is and is keeping him under wraps, could he be in trouble if that word got back to LE? Now that JM has been announced as a suspect, could the attorney be in trouble for something similar to obstruction of justice?

TIA.

Client attorney privilege?

Me neither and the comments about Hannah would probably not be attracted to him because he is black are highly offensive and just plain racist IMO.

I agree not only wouldn't I have found him threatening, I probably would have found him cute (absent of course everything that has happened over the last week+).

The family could always pay the retainer for him, but he would have to sign the actual retainer agreement. I know I have emailed a retainer agreement to someone and said sign this and return the original to us. Of course, I don't work for criminal attorneys, and I don't know if them returning it signed by JM would constitute them knowing where he is/not turning him in/harboring a fugitive, etc. They might not want to do that. The person the attorney is representing has to be the one signing the agreement, yes. Again, I have never worked in criminal law, so I am not sure if procedures in this circumstance are different or not.

As you acknowledge, a fellow student offered to walk Hannah home. She declined. Hannah is an adult and her decisions must be respected; Hannah is responsible for her own actions, not the other students. Everyone knows that college students are going to drink, always have and always will -- no matter what the law states. Pushing the drinking age to 21 only gives society the means to give otherwise law abiding young adults a criminal record early in life. Parents should teach their children to make good decisions and to not take unnecessary risks. I for one do not want any action taken against the other students -- they feel bad enough. Even if a fellow student walked Hannah home, what would stop her from going out again. Please do not blame the other students. I, for one, do not want to see her classmates tarnished by this event.

I would like to see her classmates tarnished by this event. They knew she was underage, they knew she was drinking, they knew she was drunk, they knew she was leaving, alone, at night, and they let her just say it' s okay. Would not have happened with my crowd, at my college, in my day. Several people would have walked with her to her home. That I can say definitively, whether the person was underage or not. Wouldn't let someone go out into the night alone. Now once that person was home, the responsitiblity ends, but absloutely would I not let someone leave MY house, drunk and alone at night on foot or by car. even someone of age to drink, even today.

Those classmates, friends, absolutely deserve to get into some trouble, get called out and get disciplinary action from the university. They broke laws serving alcohol at the place to underage people, most likely and knowingly let an underage drinker who was DRUNK by their own admisssion, leave alone at night. This should be broadcast and shown what can happen to save even one other student, person this year. Doubt even sanctions will do it for more than that. But absolutely, these people need to know that if you serve alcohol at your place and someone underage drinks it and gets into trouble you can be in trouble. WHy should these students be exempt? Because they are UVA studnets and not townies? Most of them are adults and should be so treated, plus they are likely under university rules about this. A fellow student, a friend, someone to whom they served alcohol to the point of "extreme intoxication" has disappeared and was likely beaten up, raped and killed, and they should go scot free from this? Absolutely not.

What, if anything, do we know about JM's roommates? If the evidence reflects HG was taken to the apartment, do you think these people are also on the radar as potential suspects? And on that line of thinking, would a warrant for the apartment also apply to possessions of all of the residents?

Wow this was very interesting!
this entire link is interesting!

In June of this year, (2007) Charlottesville Police Chief Tim Longo turned in a proposal to have some 30 security cameras installed on the Downtown Mall for the sum of $300,000. "I think [cameras are] highly effective in areas that have heavily populated pedestrian foot traffic.

While video evidence comes in handy after the fact, its role in crime prevention is disputed. That combined with general civil liberty concerns seemed to spell the end for video surveillance in Charlottesville until Councilor Kevin Lynch suggested a camera system that, unlike the original, would not feed into a centralized system

$300,000 :gasp: How on earth could it cost that much money? This is 2014! We bought cameras for our home for $500 and they can see the pores on your face.

Dashad Sage Smith, transgendered 19-year-old, last seen in the 500 block of West Main, Charlottesville, Nov. 20, 2012. There's a POI who had contact with Dashad the day she disappeared - POI has also disappeared. However, look where the search dogs got a hit:

http://www.readthehook.com/108959/missing-inside-dashad-smith-investigation

When dressed up, Dashad Sage Smith looked more like a young woman than a lot of females. He could have easily been mistaken for a vulnerable female. IMO

Although poi's large frame make him somewhat easier to spot, i suspect that he is good at blending in and disguising himself...
Wonder if LE found any women's clothing or makeup in his apt. or car...
Hope they are keeping an eye out at the Canadian border too, in case he tries to sneak into Toronto like some have in the past, imo.

"Hundreds of volunteers have been trawling a 14-square mile area around Charlottesville, looking for anything that might help with the on-going investigation.

Miss Graham's disappearance has sent a ripple of fear through the quiet college town of Charlottesville.

University president Teresa Sullivan said in a written statement on Tuesday that local and campus police have increased patrols, and the university has expanded the hours of a program that provides late-night van transportation for students.

Students have said they've begun walking in pairs at night and are paying closer attention to their surroundings"

I don't see it this way. Why compound the tragedy by hurting even more people? I doubt HG would want that.

We really don't know what happened with the friends. I wandered off from parties against advise and against my own better judgement as an undergraduate. Should my friends be punished for letting me do that? The only real difference is that I didn't pay for that mistake with my life.

phew, I wanted to say that, I was quite alarmed reading it

Interaccial dating is extremely common and on the rise.

To add to this - I'd like to point out that the high school she went to has quite a diverse population. It's 40% white and roughly 20% black and 30% hispanic. She's not a stranger to diversity and, given where she grew up (I grew up there too), she probably has multiple friends/acquaintances/classmates who are minority. I taught at the middle school down the street from her high school (but not the one that feeds into her high school) and we have the same population. There's just not a lot of eyebrows raised when the black and white kids hang out. As a matter of fact, I now live about 20 minutes away from that area and we're quite a bit less diverse here yet pretty much every one of my step daughter's friends is non-white. It's how it is here in Northern Virginia.

So I do NOT find it implausible that she would talk to this man.

Does anyone have a twitter account for LJ/JM? I'm sure he had one.

Hannah's Twitter - https://twitter.com/hegraham25
I have only seen JM's Facebook (and earlier an old MySpace which I can no longer find). Someone already noted how he changed his profile images to black on Saturday and what it might mean. I thought it interesting that he left his profile active with all of his friends names available to the public. Wondering if he didn't care or didn't know about changing the privacy settings.

BREAKING: #UVA tells @HenryGraff #JesseMatthew has been suspended without pay as a result of the criminal charge filed last night.

Interesting how different states work as to employment. State where I live, he would have already been canned due to "abandonment of job" if he didn't show up for days at work. Yet, he is just suspended without pay right now :thud: Right to work state vs. others I guess?
