You're very welcome. I followed both of these from beginning and that was a prevalent thought early on because of the timeframe both occurred and the proximity..very odd the timing no question.

I've just watched the episode on Youtube. I don't really have much to add because it's all been said already, but I'm definitely suspicious of the step dad.
 
Innocent people take a polygraph to exonerate themselves. The fact that the step dad refused to take one and lawyered up is very suspicious. Plus the fact he lied about dropping her off at the Springfield Mall and about going to work afterwards. Katelin was alone with him in his house...I believe he might have tried to have sex with her and she fought him...he got angry and choked her to death. That is why they didn't find any trace blood or DNA. Then he panicked and disposed of her in some isolated area in the area. If you are familiar with the Spotsylvania area, you know how wooded and dense the forests are there. He wrote the texts on her phone and threw the luggage out to make it look like a stranger might have abducted her. He purposely took the diploma and either kept it or burned it. This guy is sketchy as hell.
 
Even one lie about his whereabouts on that day is one too many, when he is the last known person to see her.

I think that your theory and the order of the events you wrote will be the exact details that the police will find out after the stepfather will be arrested , hopefully very soon.

I am frustrated that there is no way to put real pressure on the stepfather by the police because I am sure the investigators suspect him .

I also agree with most of what you posited here in your theory, but I just want to point out that there is a reason polygraphs tests continue to be inadmissible in court. Innocent or not, I would never agree to a polygraph for anything.

That said, sketchy as hell INDEED!
 
I am halfway through watching the Disappeared episode and one thing really caught my attention...Within minutes of James texting Kaitlin's mom to say he dropped her off, Kaitlin sent her mom a message saying she was at the airport and that she'd be out of touch due to a dying cell phone battery, (thereby making it acceptable to not hear from her for hours). If in fact James dropped her off at the mall, why would Kaitlin lie by saying she was at the airport? It wasn't until late that night when Kaitlin's mom called him, that James said he dropped her off at the mall (not the airport). Why didn't he say that in the first message right after he dropped her off? I think James did something to her and was the one writing the texts from Kaitlin's phone. Some might say, "if he was using Kaitlin's phone to text the "I'm at the airport..." message, why didn't he just say he dropped her off at the airport, so his story would match what Kaitlin texted?" I think that, for one, there's tons of cameras at airports and James' story would be easily disproven and while there are also cameras at the mall, it's easier to avoid them, especially if you drop someone off near the entrance of the parking lot. Also, by the time Kaitlin's mom spoke to him later that night, he either forgot what he texted as Kaitlin, or figured no one would notice the discrepancy. Something else people might say is, "Kaitlin ran away and maybe she said she was at the airport to throw off anyone searching for her while she took off." This scenario is far fetched because, as I mentioned above, there are a lot of security cameras at the airport and, if she wanted to run away, why even text her mom at all, knowing she was at work and that if her mom wanted to check in, she would text Kaitlin. On a side note, if she planned to disappear, why did she bother bringing her diploma to enroll in cosmetology schooling AZ? Not to mention, if she did indeed choose to take off, she would've tried to get further away from home, not towards home, where her luggage was found. I honestly believe that if she did run away, she would've taken her luggage with her and/or discarded the things she didn't want in a garbage or some other discreet place, not a couple of miles from home! I'm going to watch the rest of the episode soon and if any of my doubts are addressed in the second half, I'm sorry for being repetitive. The text message discrepancies just really got to me!

From the beginning I scoffed at step-dads story. I wasn't able to watch the episode, but thanks to the wonderful members here that did, it looks like there is some new info.
The phone pings, the verifying of no sightings of SD vehicle at mall, etc, verifying he didn't go to work and that they did search his house (we all were understandably irate when we thought they hadn't) .
I wish they'd state he's a POI , so we could discuss some other questions I have!
I truly believe that SD harmed her, unfortunately, I can't back up my opinion with why I firmly believe this as I don't want to take a ws vacation LOL
If I remember correctly, it was stated at one time that the reason Katelin wouldn't have been comfortable with taking the metro is because she had anxiety issues.
I'm so hoping that the episode brings in some information to resolve this.

We are allowed to sleuth the SD. There was a post a couple pages back from a WSer that wrote the Sheriff's dept. They confirmed he is a POI. Mods said we can sleuth him and use his initials (JRB I believe) or SD to discuss. So discuss away.....

I wonder why her diploma and clothes weren't in the luggage.

I think this episode made things more confuddled for me. The 2pm pings verses the 1pm call? Then the tower in fredericksburg showing thats where Katelin's call came from and the call '' minutes before'' to Lisa's phone showing the Stepdads phone in Partlow.
I am sure the episode did not lay all the cards on the table but if the pinging information is correct then if the stepdad did something to Katelin he had help. And the use of another phone if his one phone never left Partlow.
 
Do we have a timeline with the info we now have from Disappeared? I can't check right now as I'm on my phone. Maybe someone crafty can make one if we don't and have the phone pings and times as well.

The episode mentioned no clothes were found in the suitcase. I don't know why I'm stuck on this. Why leave everything else. Or why not leave the clothes too? I'm assuming it had a few pieces of clothing. I know I pack in excess but even if she didn't she would surely have a few articles. I wonder if someone burned them all. But why not burn her wallet if that's the case.

Maybe her clothes haven't been found , yet.
Or they were taken to a thrift store or burned or buried.
