mondo snip.... Ya'll go ahead back to JMU and y'all play along with that story for cover while I have a sleepover with Romeo___ fill-in-dude's-name here. He'll drive me back to JMU. Or I have some way back to JMU where my car is."

I call him Romeo... as in someone she "knows" and in this scenario he has no intent to harm her. This would satisfy a good friend's questions, make her/them not really "worry" or freak out; and if this were the deal I don't find that suspcious; and it would conveniently also explain most of the friends actions (as far as we've been allowed by LE to know the bits and pieces) (unless I missed something which is why I'm telling you guys, so you can find the holes in this.) Plus as C6 pointed out, she was taking a lot of care in what she was wearing, choosing the outfit etc and it sounds hot - like for a date mentality rather than merely a girls night out.

mondo snip 2.......IDK. Sorry Im a gasbag. Now excuse me while my head explodes.

Nice noodling.
Ergo the guy, if he exists, probably goes to JMU or has close ties there so a trip back to her car would be easy for him. Maybe the locked-out meme was part of the plan and she and X intended to head back toward JMU even while the concert was continuing. Under that scenario, she's got quite a start and could be anywhere by now, either too ashamed to call or unable to call under the nefarious scheme. This may be why they aren't looking for her locally???

From Virginia Tech to James Madison Univ. is an estimated 141 miles (2 and a half hours)

From her parents home to Virginia Tech is about 42 miles (approximately 45-50 minutes)

From her parents home to JMU is about 113 miles (about 2 hours)

From JMU to Charlottesville is approximately 63 miles (a little over an hours drive)

Makes you think she met a guy or guys from JMU.

Kant - Your theories are very well thought out and I love that you have already answered all the questions that we might even think about asking, but something still doesn't feel right to me. I don't know why though. Maybe I am using my emotions instead of my brain (that would be typical of me).

Somehow I just don't think she planned to meet someone. I think it was either a stranger abduction or she met someone while trapped outside.

She always seems to be "made up" in her pics so the perfect outfit just seems like the type of person she is. I think I read where one of her friends/co-workers said that she always looked good...guys or not.

Maybe she didn't drive to Cville because she had already driven to JMU and the other friend offered to drive the rest of the way. :waitasec:

The one thing I can't figure out is the statement that she had a ride. That still puzzles me...and makes me think we are still missing lots of pieces of the puzzle.

totally with you on all those points

Kant, your post was great. You explored a lot of angles I hadn't thought much about before. Great post :)

To answer your questions in red (at the top of your post)..

I used Mapquest for all of these answers, just so you know.

THANK YOU! (You went to a lot of trouble I thought someone local may know off the top of their head; that was so sweet; thank you.) :)

So JMU and VT are not super close; but not so far as to not be able to make friends (meet guys) there. Do we know if she spent time at that campus? b/c there was a group of nine original girlfirends and they sort of split b/w the two schools as I understood it.

More law enforcement officials are joining forces with Virginia State Police to track down Morgan Harrington. Thursday a group from the Greene County Sheriff's Office joined in the search for Harrington. The group, along with Albemarle county search teams, set up a command post near University Hall. Teams with canines searched wooded areas along Ivy Road.

A vigil will be held Thursday evening in Roanoke for Morgan Harrington. Her friends plan to gather at 7:00 p.m. at the Northside High School in Roanoke County. Harrington attended Northside before transferring and graduating from Lord Botetourt High School.

The one thing I can't figure out is the statement that she had a ride. That still puzzles me...and makes me think we are still missing lots of pieces of the puzzle.

I am with you too (in conflict with my own theories heh heh) but what makes me lean toward a planned meeting is my emotions too. I cannot get myself beyond the very close longtime girlfriends NOT reporting her missing the next day or at the very least calling her parents the next day. That has got me hung up really badly. .....unless they knew (thought) she was OK.

And the leaving her... and her "having a ride." I dont know this woman, but at a glance she doesn't seem the type to choose to ride with a total stranger in a strange town when all she had to do was wait it out and go home with the friends. (wait it somehow; I know it was cold) And to that, the friend could have come to the gate/door and tossed her the keys so she could at least wait it out in a locked car or whatever. All that just hangs me up really badly.

Im off caffeine, so Im a little dense today. (today?) So this is a secret code? Like "Two For One?" Or am I reading too much into it? Is there significance to ellipses - the number of dots before each line?

Is she an only child? or an only daughter with brother/s?

* Hypothetical scenario 1 - ROMEO the good guy

Romeo dude is someone she "knows" somehow; Maybe he goes to JMU rather than her school, VT. If so, the 'rents woudln't necessarily know of him (if that's her goal b/c maybe they wouldn't approve or she thinks they wouldn't) Maybe he's a good enough dude with no intent to harm and he planned to meet her and they'd spend a night together; she agreed

**Agree with this...especially from the friend's perspectives. "Morgan's fine, she's outside hanging out with Johnny whoever, maybe we'll meet up with them after the show etc., otherwise he's driving her back prob. tomorrow. etc". HOWEVER, this would have to be a friend only known to Morgan, since I can't believe a mutual friend of the group wouldn't have been called by the waiting girls when Morgan didn't roll back to the car and/or they hadn't heard back from her all night.

Also, from the presser, she drove the first leg of the trip form VT to JMU. The roommate was with her presumably (?) on that first leg of the trip from VT to JMU? Then they switched cars to go the last leg of the trip form JMU to the arena. Why switch cars? maybe b/c she knew she wouldn't be going back to JMU with the other girls that night?

**Perhaps the friend whose car they took from JMU was bigger, like an SUV who could fit the whole group more comfortably. Maybe Morgan didn't have any more gas/gas money so they decided to take another car. Maybe since Morgan drove first leg, another girl offered to be the DD and drive the concert legs, assuming that Morgan would be driving herself and the roommate the next day from JMU. This would give Morgan a chance to drink/smoke/do some type of drug on the ride up/party in the lots whatever and not be worried about driving, since she'd already contributed to the night's driving. My friends and I do this (one person drives there, another girl buys booze, group stays and eats food at anothers house so its all divided fairly equally etc.).

She "met" someone online, aka "Online Guy" aka OG for short and arranged to meet him a C'ville; the dude's a stranger and it all went bad from the get-go.

**I don't think Morgan would have gone to meet an online friend. For starters, she's very pretty! She goes to a HUGE school, seems pretty socialable and nice and has many friends (as evidenced by Facebook support group!). I am sure she would have plenty of guys that she would get to know in person before she resorted to online dating/meeting people? I would think this would be more plausible if she was talking with someone online about getting tickets at the arena perhaps and arranged a meet up, but clearly she had the tickets and was going with a group already.

WHY CHARLOTTESVILLE???

For me, one of the problems (heh I have issues with my own theories) one of the problems with either of these concepts is why would she jump into this endeavor in C'ville - a town X miles away from her home where she's out of her comfort zone? Her friends are inside the arena and might as well be in China b/c they were not in contact with her after that one call. I mean... it sounda like the friends were not concerned enough to report her missing even the next morning which tells me that she told them she planned to spend the night elsewhere. It was the dad who reported her missing when she didn't show up later in the day for the planned study session.

**Agree with this but I got nothing! Either friends knew of ulterior motives and weren't concerned or they were totally out of the loop as well. Doesn't explain their negligent behavior towards a close friend but hey, teens/young adults don't always display the best moral guidance especially in situations where they may get in trouble (drinking underage, on drugs whatever).

CONFOUNDING PARTS?

The possible confounding parts are: Could the guy be an OK guy, but there's a thrid party who messed it up for them? Or is he a stranger? (If there's a guy at all)

Another possible confounding part: Did someone else (other then the person reporting the purse and turning it in) find the purse first, do whatever with it, and then put it where it was found? Did the battery simply fall out or was it deliberately pulled out? Was the phone roughed up like it had been dropped? Was the battery found with the phone ? (just outside of it?)

Other possible confounding thing: Why did she leave the arena? She called the friend to say she couldn't get back in which sort of suggests to me that she didnt know she'd be locked out; And if she intended to meet a dude outside the arena, would she then CARE if she coudln't get back in? If the dude was the goal all along and not the concert? Unless he had a ticket too, but if so - that doesn't require HER to go outside at all, but rather for him to come IN.

Also a problem with my own theory heh is why tell your friend on the phone that youd' "get a ride" if you had already planned to sleep elsewhere? I could see her contacting the friend by phone to say "yeah we hooked up; I dont need a ride.." iow verifying that she didn't get stood up or something weird like that. But then why did the friends wait "hours" for her at their car after the concert? in the dark... in the cold... in a strange town.... and when the other concert-goers would have presumably left the arena?

**All great thoughts. There are so many unanswered questions. I really wish there would be more information released (assuming there is something to release) since there seems to be a lot of misinformation, no information and muddled miscommunication going around.

She has an older brother. Apparently it's a family thing and if we all read it and communicate it ..."According to the statement, the Harrington's believe if the message is shared with others Morgan will experience "love, comfort and peace.""

Is this a religious thing? What is this? A message to Morgan? A family password thing? Very confused.

Also Morgan has an older brother, Alex, who is 22. No other info on him.

When I first got back on the page I read Kant's post and thought I was on an online dating site. LOL

I saw the same thing as you and I am still on caffeine.

She has one brother who is 22. He was in the Roanoke newspaper today.

I agree that the friends here hold many of the key links in this....why would the friends not contact police/concert security/have friend paged at arena after waiting significant amount of time for Morgan to show after concert and not hearing from her? I would have been concerned enough by that point to call parents/police etc. ESPECIALLY if she had told friends she was going to BATHROOM, wound up outside and not let back in, and I had not HEARD FROM HER SINCE 9:30 AT THE LATEST. Assuming the concert didn't get out until at least 11:30, midnight...where did the girls think their friend was during concert? At concert's conclusion? After waiting at the car for some time?

EXACTLY!! I mean there is NO GOOD REASON not to ask the security people to get someone to get on a PA system and say something rather than just waiting at the car. There is no "risk" of embarrassment or anything else I can think of for them NOT to do at least that. (And maybe they did and we don't know it; but why not tell us that? b/c it makes the friends look pretty bad and what's the harm in revealing that they paged her if they did?)

Even if the friends were baked how-high-the-moon and didn't want to encounter LE, security is not LE and SOMEONE could have asked an employee to get on the PA system and page her. dang. ...unless they knew there was no need to ddo that. (But then again why wait around? Unless they just SAID they waited around in an effort to somehow console the parents. Im pulling straws.

There were search teams again searching the woods along Ivy Rd which parallels the railroad tracks which are under the Alderman Rd Bridge ... this is also near the baseball field with the small parking lot (where the purse was found?)

Her older brother graduated from UVa but according to her parents, she knows no one at UVa or in Charlottesville. MOST kids who went to high school in VA know people who go to UVa, JMU and VaTech ....

The underlined words dictate how many dots there are at the beginning. Too (two), for (four) and once (one).

It is a little cryptic, and it seems odd that the family would share something so personal with the world. But I find it very sweet. This must be very hard for them.

There is something that doesn't seem "normal" in this young woman's relationship with her parents. The task of teenagers is to break away from parents in order to form their own lives. Such a close attachment with her parents at 20 doesn't set well with me. It looks like co-dependency to me.
I can't help but think that Morgan lived a lot of her life in secret from her parents and at the same time had an abnormal attachment to them.
The make-up, piercings, sexy clothes, etc. just don't jive with the "perfect daughter" image.
After observing teens and young adults for my 34 year career, I have seen many of these "perfect" young ladies (especially females) who have another totally different side. So, what I'm trying to say is that I can imagine her experimenting with drugs, meeting and leaving with someone (planned or not), and getting way in over her head.
I think the friends are not telling the whole story, a la Natalie Holloway. I have seen it over and over where young people will not "rat" NO MATTER WHAT.
Puzzling and frustrating. Kant, thank you for your enormous efforts. Thoughtful scenarios.

JMO

Mom and Dad on HLN right now.

Had few boyfriends, no real steady relationships. Interesting...makes the online bf scenario more plausible (new to dating, naive etc.)

Thanks for that. Pantera, the Dead, Bob Marley, Bonnaroo...I have to think she smokes pot, at least infrequently. Maybe she went with some guys to get high. I would have done something like that when I was young, but I'm a guy. She may have kind of known someone she met at the concert or they may have seemed nice, at music gatherings you just assume people are cool unless they seem obviously creepy. Maybe someone offered her a beer with a date rape type drug in it.
This is interesting and plausible to me. I know people are concerned about folks inappropriately "judging" her and concluding that "a certain type of person" listens to a "certain tyoe of music." But to SOME DEGREE, isn't that true? (Im inlcuding myself here, so no tomaters) :) That does not make her a bad girl - not by any stretch.

Also, I've read descriptions of other venues on Metallica's tour route which had heavy LE presence etc; but not all venues are the same, right? It depends on the town, the town's budget, what is customary for that town, past incidents, many factors. Do we have anyone who went to this concert? or do we know if there was a heavy LE presence? (or security -- private or whatever?)

Also, there's no smoking (?) of anything in this arena except in the designated indoor areas?

And they sell alcohol? I wonder if they're particular about ID-ing hot girls who are not 21, but close to it? Would she have asked someone to buy her something - alcohol? Or could the bartender or someone else have slipped her something as you suggested? But if so, the mechanics and logisitcs of it all are still stumping me b/c of the call from outside, so she made it outside. That one drug take like 10 minutes to hit a person (or is it immediate?) (Or it depends on the person and the dose?)

But from what they're saying she was coherent enough to be make a call from outside and understand that she couldnt get back in.

Was this her first "big" concert in a huge crowded venue?

HLN is discussing the case now. The Mom just mentioned the friends who went to the concert (if I heard correctly) are Sarah, Maggie, and the roommate, Amy. (and I thought Amanda, Amy's sister went too?)

The dad just said that Morgan's brother recently graduated from Univ of Virginia IIRC (near C'ville?) and they're speculating that she felt she knew someone to call to "get a ride" as she told her friend when she called to say she was locked out of the concert.

But how can you say you'll "get a ride" just b/c you sorta kinda know some people who sorta kinda know your brother who already graduated recently (no longer enrolled) from a university sorta close to C'ville? (How close is it?)

Do you have those phone numbers handy? Why bank on that? that someone is even home or available on a Sat night? and that some aquaintance (not dear friend) would drop what they're doing and drive you with no previous notice b/c you'r some dude's sister (even tho you're hot) X miles from C'ville to JMU where her car was?

Why can I not buy that part?

MOO
